Romulus is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 23,989 at the 2010 census. It is most notable as the location of the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, a major hub for Delta Air Lines. Romulus was a stop of the Underground Railroad in the 1800s when slaves fled the inhumane conditions of plantations in the South to the free states of the North. In 1987, Northwest Airlines Flight 255 crashed into an overpass bridge and exploded just seconds after taking off, killing all but one of the 155 passengers and crew. In 2005, the EQ Recovery Plant caught fire, forcing residents to evacuate their homes. In 2009, another Northwest plane, Flight 253, suffered an unsuccessful bombing incident as it approached Metro Airport. Nigerian man Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab from Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula was convicted of eight criminal counts and sentenced to four life sentences plus 50 years without parole. In 2010, Romulus became incorporated as a city. The city has a total area of 35.61 square miles (93.11 km²), which is 035 square km² (095 km²) and 095 water and water rights. The town of Preston was located in the north-east part of Romulus. It had a post office from 1899 to 1906. The village ofRomulus was platted on the Lansing B. Misner estate in 1871. During slave times, Samuel R. Kingsley lived in a house on Ozga Rd near Pullens Corners, what is today known as Five Points.
History
Romulus is the primary city name, but also Brownstown, Brownstown Township, Brownstown Twp, Brownstwn Twp are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Romulus. Romulus was a stop of the Underground Railroad in the 1800s when slaves fled the inhumane conditions of plantations in the South to the free states of the North. On August 16, 1987, Romulus was the site of the Northwest Airlines Flight 255 disaster, in which the plane serving the flight crashed into an overpass bridge and exploded just seconds after taking off. A memorial for the victims is at the crash site at the Interstate 94 and Middlebelt Road interchange. In 2005, the EQ Recovery Plant caught fire and residents within 1 to 1+1/3 miles (1.6 to 2.1 km) radius were forced to evacuate their homes. On December 25, 2009, another Northwest plane, Flight 253, suffered an unsuccessful bombing incident as it approached Metro Airport. There were two stops in Romulus and those structures are still intact to this day. The White Church at the Pullens Corner / Five Points was also an underground railroad stop. During slave times, Samuel R. Kingsley lived in a house on Ozga Rd near Pullens Corners, what is today known as Five Points. He hid slaves in an underground cellar. Today, the house is located on Hunt Street across from the Romulus Historical Museum. The address to the house was 37426 S. Huron River Drive. It had a post office from 1899 to 1906. It was located in the north-east part of Romulus. The village of Romuli was platted on the Lansing B. Misner estate in 1871. Romulus became incorporated as a city in 1970.
Geography
Romulus is in the south-central portion of Wayne County.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.95 square miles (93.11 km²) The city is located on Interstate 94 (I-94) and I-275, which run through the city. The City of Romulus is bordered to the north by Van Born Road, to the south by Pennsylvania Road, to the east by Inkster Road, and to the west by Hannan Road. It is located in Wayne County, in the southern part of the state. The city was founded in the 18th century by the Romulus family, who moved to the area in the late 1800s. The Romulus area is known as one of the oldest towns in the state, dating back to at least the early 19th century. It was the site of the first recorded European settlement in the 17th century, and was later called Romulus by the Romans. It has a population of about 2,000 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau estimate. The town is located near the junction of I-94 and Interstate275, and is near the border of Wayne and Wayne counties, in south central Pennsylvania. It lies on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the county. It also has a nicknames of Van Born, Pennsylvania Road, Inkster, Hannan, and Hannan Avenue. The area was once known as Romulus Township, but was later renamed Romulus.

Government and infrastructure
The Wayne County Airport Authority has its headquarters in the former L.C. Smith Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus. The United States Postal Service operates the Romulus-Carl W. Morris Post Office located in downtown on Hunt Street and Goddard Road. Retail is scarce in the city with the exception of a few pharmacies and small discount retailers. Due to the lack of major grocery retailers and numerous failed attempts to bring in new stores to the food desert community, most citizens have to travel to adjacent cities including Van Buren Township and Taylor to go to more prominent supermarket chains. In 2018, major online retailer Amazon opened its DTW1 Fulfillment Center, north of Metro Airport near Ecorse and Vining Roads. Approximately 1,600 workers are employed at the site.Romulus has a variety of small businesses throughout the city including hotels, bars, and restaurants. In 1975, General Motors, opened theRomulus Engine plant on Ecorse Road. The facility produces V6 and 10-speed transmission engines for a plethora of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles. It also has an operational police department, which its headquarters is located in the 610 building of the airport on the East service Drive, near the L.c. Smith building. The city is home to the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Detroit Pistons. The Detroit Lions play their home games at the Joe Louis Arena. The Red Lions also have a stadium at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Parks and recreation
After a failed city millage in February 2011, city officials had to close all of the city parks in order to keep the city financially stable. However, the Downtown Development Authority were willing to maintain the operations of Mary Ann Banks Park & Historical Park, reopening the park in Spring 2011. By 2015, the city's finances had rebounded and with determination from city officials and citizens, most of theCity's parks have reopened with improvements and even opening a new park. The Romulus Athletic Center, located at 35765 Northline Road, is a facility for recreation and conferences. It opened on April 1, 2008. It is located on the northeast side at the corner of Beverly and Henry Ruff Roads; formerly Park #1. The city's largest park is St. Johns Lodge No.#44 Park - located in downtown Romulus. It was opened in April 2008 and is located in the center of the downtown area. The park is located near Five Points in Romulus and is known for its large number of outdoor activities. It also has a baseball diamond and a basketball court. It has been home to the Romulus High School football team since 2007. The City of Romulus is home to a number of sports teams, including the New Orleans Saints, the Detroit Lions, and the New York Knicks. The New York Yankees, New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles are among the teams that play in the city. The Detroit Lions also have a team that plays in the Rose Bowl, which opened in 2008.

The Romulus Community School District serves and educates the children in the City of Romulus and other communities. The district is made up of a high school, a middle school, and four elementary schools. A portion of the district is zoned to the Wayne-Westland Community Schools.Summit Academy School is a charter school in Romulus. It has had a 100% graduation rate and 100% college acceptance rate. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit formerly operated the St. Aloysius School inRomulus. The school has been ranked as one of the top 5% of schools in Michigan. It is also a member of the Michigan Charter School Association. The high school is part of the Detroit Public School System. The middle school is a part of Detroit Public Schools. The elementary schools are part of Wayne- Westland Community schools. They are in Wayne, Westland, and Franklin, Michigan. They have a combined enrollment of 6,000 students. They also have a total enrollment of 2,000, which is 1,000 less than the average high school in the state. The public school district has a population of 3,000. It also has a total of 1,500 students in the high school and 4,000 in the middle and elementary schools, which makes up the majority of its enrollment.
