Ypsilanti

Ypsilanti is a city in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 20,648. It is the site of Michigan State Normal School, now Eastern Michigan University, and the historical campus of Cleary Business College, now Cleary University. The city is also the location of the first Domino's Pizza. It has played an important role in the automobile industry, producing the "ACE" car from 1920 to 1922. The last Kaiser car made in the city rolled off the assembly line in 1953, when the company merged with Willys-Overland and moved production to Toledo, Ohio. The museum is the home to an original Fabulous Hudson Hornet race car, which inspired the character Doc Hudson in the 2006 Pixar animated film Cars. In 1979, Faz Husain, the first Muslim and the first native of India to win elected office in Michigan, was elected to the city council. On June 23, 2020, Mayor Beth Bashert resigned after controversial comments she made about race during a Zoom meeting. She was the first person of color to serve as mayor of a Michigan city. In the 1990s, the citizens reduced the penalty for the use and sale of marijuana to $5 (the Ypsilsanti Marijuana Initiative) and passed a living wage ordinance. In 2007, the cities of Caro and Clio were chosen by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority to take part in the Blueprints for Michigan's Downtowns program.

History

Ypsilanti is the primary city name, but also Superior Township, Superior Twp are acceptable city names or spellings, Willow Run on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is City of Ypsilanti. Ypsilanti was a trading post established in 1809 by a French-Canadian fur trader from Montreal. A permanent settlement was established on the east side of the Huron River in 1823 by Major Thomas Woodruff. It was incorporated into the Territory of Michigan as the village Woodruff's Grove. A separate community a short distance away on the westside of the river was established in1825 under the name "YpsILanti", after Demetrios Ypsilantis, a hero in the Greek War of Independence. The two communities eventually merged, with the two communities merging in 1829. In the early 1970s, the citizens reduced the penalty for the use and sale of marijuana to $5. In 1998, Eastern Michigan University achieves its highest student enrollment of 26,000. On June 23, 2020, Mayor Beth Bashert resigned after controversial comments she made about race during a Zoom meeting. Tom Monaghan found as DomiNick as Domino's Pizza at 507 W. W. St, St, Michigan. John Norman Collins is suspected of being the perpetrator of the series of murders of coeds at the University of Michigan and EasternMichigan University.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.47 square miles (11.58 km²) The Huron River flows through Ypsilanti with Ford Lake on the southern edge of the city. Paint Creek also runs through the city and the Border-to-Border Trail runs through it. The city is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is located on the Michigan-Wisconsin border. It has a population of 3,816. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located near the city, and is open to the public. The Hurons River flows into the city from the north. The border between Michigan and Wisconsin is known as the Ypsi River. The town's name is derived from the Hurons, a river that flows through the area. It is also the name of a Native American tribe that once lived in the area and is now a part of the Canadian province of Wawasee. It was also the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It's also the location of the first post office in the United States, which was established in 1805. The first post station was built in 1806. The current post office was opened in 1808. The last post station closed in 1820. The post office reopened in 1828. It remains open to this day and is called Ypsilsanti, Michigan. It lies on the border with Canada.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 19,435 people, 8,026 households, and 2,880 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 61.5% White, 29.2% African American, 0.6% Native American, 3.4% Asian, 1.1% from other races, and 4.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.9% of the population. The city's median income was $28,610, and the median income for a family was $40,793. The per capita income for the city in 2010 was $16,692. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was2.92. The median age in theCity was 25 years. The gender makeup ofthe city was 49.7% male and 50.3%. The city has a population of 22,362 people, with 8,551 households and 3,377 families as of the Census of 2000. The population density was 5,081.5 people per square mile (1,962.3/km²). The city had a population density of 4,488.5 inhabitants per squaremile (1, 733.0/km 2) The city is located on the shores of the Red River, which is a tributary of the Mississippi River. The Red River runs through the city and flows into the Little Red River. It is located near the city's downtown area.

Arts and culture

Ypsilanti has the second largest contiguous historic district in the state of Michigan, behind only the much larger city of Grand Rapids. The city has become known for summer festivals in the part of the city called "Depot Town", which is adjacent to both Riverside and Frog Island Parks along the banks of the Huron River. Ypsi Pride takes place on the first Friday in June and seeks to celebrate LGBTQ+ culture across the community by hosting a variety of family friendly programming, entertainment, and educational content. The Riverside Arts Center boasts a 115-seat black box theater, a sizable art gallery and some meeting rooms and offices. The Tridge is a three-way wooden footbridge under the Cross Street bridge over theHuron River at 42.24561°N 83.61160°W / 42. 24561; -83. 61160;. The Ypsilantian Water Tower, adjacent to the campus of Eastern Michigan University, holds the unique distinction of being the winner of the Most Phallic Building contest. Other sites of interest include: the Ypsilsanti District Library, the Pease Auditorium, the Highland Cemetery, and the Ladies' Literary Club Building. The Depot Town area features many specialty shops, bars and grills, and a farmers' market. It is located along Michigan Avenue, along the border of Riverside Park, Frog Island Park, and Depot Town, which is next to the former Frog Island Beer Festival. It also includes the Depot Town Food Co-op, which was founded in 1864.

Parks and recreation

There are many parks within the city limits of Ypsilanti, including: Prospect Park, Riverside Park, and Frog Island Park. Rutherford Municipal Pool re-opened in 2014 after community members raised $1 million for reconstruction. The city is home to the Michigan ElvisFest, Michigan Summer Beer Festival, and Michigan Heritage Festival. The town also hosts the Michigan State Fair, which is held in November. The Ypsi River runs through the center of the city. It is also the site of the Michigan International Auto Show and the Michigan Automobile Show and Trade Show, which takes place in March and April each year. The community is also known for its love of music, particularly country music, blues, and country music. The area is also home to Michigan State University, which holds the Michigan Music Festival in June and July. It also hosts several other festivals, such as the Michigan Spring Beer Festival and Michigan State ElvisFest in August and September each year, as well as the annual Michigan State Beer Festival in September. The village also has its own water park, which was built in the early 20th century. It was named after the town's founder, William "Bill" Ypsalanti. The current mayor is the son of William "Bob" YPSalanti, a former mayor of the same name. The mayor has been a member of the Democratic Party since 1966. The council has been in office since 1973. The first mayor was elected in 1974. The last mayor was William "Mike" Schulder, a Democrat, and served two terms.

Education

Ypsilanti is home to Eastern Michigan University, founded in 1849 as Michigan State Normal School. It was the setting of a well known and long running High/Scope Perry Preschool Study regarding the effects of early childhood education in children. The study researched the effects on the later lives of low income children from the area. The city is also home to a Washtenaw Community College (WCC) sponsored off-site extension center. Ypsilante is also the home of Arbor Preparatory High School, which is a charter school for students in the city, as well as parts of Superior Township and Ypsiilanti Township. It is the site of the Michigan State University College of Art and Design, which was founded in 1798. The town also has a number of high schools and charter schools, including Global Educational Excellence, which operates the Global Tech Academy (PreK-5) in nearby YpsILTOWN. The school district merged with Willow Run Community Schools to form a new, united district on July 1, 2013. The district has a population of more than 10,000. It has a history of being a college town, with more than 17,500 undergraduate and 4,800 graduate students. It also has an international reputation for being a good place to live and work, with many of its residents living in Europe and the U.S. since the 1950s. The community has a reputation for having a high school graduation rate of over 80 percent.

Infrastructure

I-94 forms part of the southern boundary of the city. US 12 is a business loop route through downtown Ypsilanti. M-17 (Washtenaw Avenue) runs though the city and connects to Ann Arbor. The Border-to-Border Trail winds through the city, linking the city to the border with Michigan and (eventually) Dexter. The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority operates bus service in Ypsilsanti. Service radiates from 220 Pearl Street in downtown. The city is served by the Ann Arbor-Ypsilsen Transit Center at 220 Pearl St. in downtown, as well as a number of other public transit options. The bus station is located on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Pearl Street. It is located in the heart of the downtown area, near the intersection of Michigan and Michigan Avenues. It also has a bus station on Michigan Avenue, which runs through the center of the town. The transit center is also located on Michigan Ave, which connects to the city's downtown area via Michigan Avenue (Michigan Avenue) and Michigan Street (Michigan Street). It is the only bus station in the city that is not located on a major highway, and is located near the downtown business district of Ypsisilanti (Michigan Ave and Michigan Avenue).
