Farmington is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,372. It is surrounded by Farmington Hills, except for a small portion bordered by Livonia to the south. Since 2009, the city's downtown has been the center of an extensive renovation and remodeling featuring a refacing or rebuilding of many buildings. The area is known for its historic downtown, elegant Victorian-style homes, and one of Michigan's top rated public school systems, Farmington Public Schools. In 2007 CNNMoney listed Farmington as number 55 in its Best Places to Live survey. Farmington was also ranked 27th on the list for Best to Live in 2013, citing nearly US$3 million in additional city renovations and development, bumping its rank up to No. 27. The name Farmington, which properly refers to the 2.7-square-mile (7.0 km²) municipality incorporated in the early 19th century, is sometimes erroneously used to refer to the 33.3-sq-mi neighboring city of Farmington Township (Farmington Township until 1973), which surrounds it. In 1976 the National Register of Historic Places declared part of the city the Farmington Historic District. The city has a total area of 2.66 square miles (6.89 km²), all of it land. The town was first known as Quakertown, as were the settlers who joined him.

History

Farmington was the site of three Native American trails - the Orchard Lake Trail, the Grand River Trail, and the Shiawassee Trail. The name Farmington was officially chosen because it was the name of Arthur Power's hometown, Farmington, New York. Farmington proper refers to the 2.7-square-mile (7.0 km²) municipality incorporated in the early 19th century. It is sometimes erroneously used to refer to the neighboring city of Farmington Hills (Farmington Township until 1973), which surrounds it. In 1976 the National Register of Historic Places declared part of the city the Farmington Historic District. The city was founded in 1824 by Arthur Power, who hailed from the state of New York and was a Quaker. The town was first known as Quakertown, and later as Farmington. It was named after the town of the same name in New York, where Power was originally from. In 1826 it was officially named Farmington by the state legislature. It became a city in 1828, and a suburb of Detroit in 1838. It has a population of 2.3 million. The current mayor is D.J. Sutter, who was elected in November 2012. The mayor is a former mayor of Detroit, Michigan, and served from 2008 to 2013. He was re-elected in November 2013, and will serve a second term in office in 2015. The City Hall building was built in 1823. The Town Hall is located on the former site of the former Farmington Town Hall.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.66 square miles (6.89 km²), all of it land. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have been named after a president or prime minister. It has a population of 1,856. The town's population was 1,744 at the 2010 census. It was the first city to be named after President Abraham Lincoln, who died in office in 1868. It also is the last city in Mississippi to be so named. The population of the town is 1,638. It had a population increase of 1.7% in the 2010 Census. The largest city to have a mayor in the city is St. Louis, which has aPopulation of 2,854. The smallest city to do so is Laredo, Texas, at 1,541. The most populous city to the city's east is Puyallup, Washington, at 2,737. The biggest city to its west is Pueblo, Arizona, at 3,836. The closest city to St. Patrick's Cathedral is Poynter City, at 4,838. The nearest town to the town's center is Poughkeepsie, at 5,741. the largest town to its north, at 6,841. It's the only town in the county with a population over 1,000.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 10,372 people, 4,624 households, and 2,735 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 71.5% White, 11.4% African American, 0.4%. Native American, 13.9% Asian and 0.1% Pacific Islander. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1%. The city's median income was $56,442, and the median income for a family was $67,407. The per capita income for the city is $36,281. About 2.6% of families and 4. 4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5. 5% of those under age 18 and 7. 6% ofThose age 65 or over. The city is located on the U.S.-Mexico border. It is located near the border with Mexico. It has a population of 10,373, including 4,959 people living in 4,859 housing units, and 1,869 people living on the Mexico-U.S. border. The population density is 3,899.2 per square mile (1,505.5/km²). The city has a median age of 39.5 years, with 22.0% under the age of 18, 6.1 percent from 18 to 24, 29.4 percent from 25 to 44, 26.9 percent from 45 to 64, and 15.6 percent who were 65 years of age or older.

Government

Farmington is governed by a city council consisting of a mayor and four council members. The city council appoints a city manager who manages the day-to-day operations of the city. Farmington is surrounded by the city of Farmington Hills. The cities combine to form a district represented in Michigan's state government. It is part of the 14th Senate district, represented since 2009 by Democrat Vincent Gregory, and the 37th House of Representatives district. Sara Bowman was elected, by the council, to this position in November 2019. She will be Farmington's mayor until the end of the current term in November 2020. She is the first woman to be elected to the position in the city's history. The current mayor is Sara Bowman, a Democrat, who was elected in November 2018 and will be in office until 2019. The mayor's term is set to end in November 2021, and she is expected to be re-elected to a second term in 2022. She was elected to her current post in November 2014, and will serve a four-year term until her third term is up in November 2024. The council-manager form of government is in place in Farmington, Michigan, and is used by the state of Michigan. The state's Senate is represented by Vincent Gregory and the state's House of Reps are represented by John Conyers, both D-Mich., and are from Farmington. The U.S. State of Michigan is represented in the House by Mary Burke, a Republican, since 2009.

Education

Farmington is served by the Farmington Public Schools. Farmington High School is one of the two high schools in the district. There are three middle schools, East Middle School, Power Middle School and Warner Middle School. Our Lady of Sorrows School, established in 1935, is in Farmington. The community is also served by parochial and private schools. The town has a population of about 2,000 people. It is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the Lower Peninsula of Ohio. The city is located on the Michigan Turnpike, which connects to the Detroit and Dearborn areas. It has an estimated population of 2,200. It also has a number of small lakes and streams, which are used for fishing and other outdoor activities. The village is also home to the American Museum of Natural History, which was established in 1872. It was the first museum in the U.S. to be built in the United States, and was opened in 1875. The museum was later expanded to include a museum of Michigan history, which is still open today. There is a public library in the town, which has been open since 1876. The library is also used as a community center, which will be used in the future for community activities. It will also be used as the site of a new high school, which opened in 2019. The high school was previously called Harrison High School. It closed in 2019 and will be replaced by a community centre.

Notable sites

The former Farmington Winery building is located on Grand River Avenue just west of Orchard Lake Road. It houses the "Haunted Winery" during the Halloween season. The building was built in the early 20th century. It is located in the former town of Farmington, New Hampshire. It was built on the site of a former winery in the 1930s and 1940s. The winery was closed in the 1970s and the building is now used as a parking lot for the town's golf course. It has been converted into a private residence. It also houses a winery and a haunted house for Halloween. The former Winery is now called the Farmington Wine House and is in the process of being restored to its former glory. The Winery was founded in the 1920s by the family who lived in Farmington and later moved to the nearby town of Orchard Lake. The current Winery opened in the late 1950s and is located near the town of Fayetteville, North Carolina. It's located on the former site of the former FarmINGTON Winery and is known as the " haunted winery" for its Halloween events. The " haunted" winery is open to the public during this time of year and is open from October through November. The Farmington wine shop is also open to visitors in the summer. It closed in 2007. It now houses a private winery that offers tours of the historic Farmington area. The town has a number of other wineries in the area, including the "Haunted Winery," which opened in 2008.
