Clawson is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It was founded by European Americans in 1829 and was originally known as Pumachug and The Corners. The name was inspired by the sound made by the Cider Mill and Saw Mill on each corner of the main intersection. The city's name is a misspelling of the surname of John Lawson, an early European-American settler. At the 2010 census, there were 11,825 people, 5,460 households and 2,992 families living in the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.20 square miles (5.70 km²), all land. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was2.88. The median age was 39.9 years, with 17.9% of residents under the age of 18; 7.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 31.4% were from 25 to 44; 28.4%. were from 45 to 64; and 14.8% were 65 years of age or older. The population density was 5,375.0 inhabitants per square mile (2,075.3/km²). There were 5,791 housing units at an average density of 2,632.3 per squaremile (1,016.3 /km²) The racial makeup was 96.10% White, 0.80% African American, 1.34% Native American, 2.0% Asian, and 1.9%. from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1%.

History

The city's name is a misspelling of the surname of John Lawson, an early European-American settler. It was founded by European Americans in 1829 and was originally known as Pumachug and The Corners. The name was inspired by the sound made by the Cider Mill and Saw Mill on each corner of the main intersection. The city was incorporated as Clawson in 1921 as a village; in 1940 it was incorporated into Detroit as a city. The area was occupied by the historic Potowatomi people, who were among the indigenous peoples in the Detroit territory. They traded furs for goods for years with the French Canadians and English colonists. It is now home to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State University and the Wayne County Museum of Art. It has a population of more than 1,000,000 and is home to a number of museums, including the Museum of African American History and the Detroit Museum of Nature and Science. It also has the Detroit International Film Festival, which is held every year in the city's International Center for the Performing Arts, which was founded in 1828. The museum's exhibition, "Detroit: The City That Never Was," is open to the public and features works by Detroit artists, musicians, writers and other artists. It will be on display through the end of the year at the Museum's Museum of American Art, which will be open through the beginning of the next year. It's also on display at the Michigan Museum of History, which opened in 1858.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.20 square miles (5.70 km²), all land. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to be named after a former president of the United States, George H.W. Bush, who died in office in 1961. The town's population was 2,816 at the time of the 2010 census, down from 2,917 in the 1950s and 2,716 in the 1990s. The U.N. World Heritage Center is located in the city, and was founded in 1881. It has a population of 1,836. The United States Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 2,632. The area has a land mass of 2,700 square miles, or 5,700 km² (2,717 square miles) The city has an area of 5.70 kilometers, or 2.2 square miles. It was named after the 19th-century President William McKinley, who was born in the town in 1858. In 1881, the town was named for a former President, George W. McKinley. The current mayor of the town is William "Bill" Houghton, who served as president from 1881 to 1883, and served from 1883 to 1885. The population was 1,715 in 1885 to 1887.

At the 2010 census, there were 11,825 people, 5,460 households and 2,992 families living in the city. There were 5,791 housing units at an average density of 2,632.3 per square mile (1,016.3/km²). The racial makeup was 93.4% White, 1.9% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.0% Asian, and 0.4%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1% of the population. The median household income was $50,929 and the median family income was$64,684. About 1.6% of residents were under the age of 18 and 4.8% of those over 65 were living below the poverty line at the time of the 2000 census. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was2.88. The sex makeup was 49.0 per cent male and 51.0 percent female. The city's median age was 38.9 years. For every 100 females there were 94.0 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over there were 89.5 males. The population density was 5,787.0 inhabitants per squaremile (2,234.4/ km²) The city has a population of 12,732, with 5,572 households and 3,259 families as of the 2010 Census. Government

Clawson is governed by a City Council consisting of a Mayor and four council members. The city council appoints a City Manager, who manages the day-to-day operations of the city. Clawson is represented in the State House of Representatives by Padma Kuppa, in the state Senate by Mallory McMorrow, and in the US Congress 9th Congressional District by Andy Levin. It is also represented by Haley Stevens in the U.S. Congress 11th Congressional district. The City of Clawson has a population of 2,000. The mayor is a Democrat. The council has a Republican majority of 1.5%. The city has a black mayor and a white city council. It has a Hispanic mayor and four black council members, as well as a black city manager and a black assistant city manager. The Mayor is a Republican, as is the State Senate. The State House has a Democratic majority of 0.7%. The State Senate has a GOP majority of 2.0%. The US Congress has a Democrat and a Republican district, the 11th Congressional District. The state's mayor and state senator are both Democrats, as are the state congressmen, Andy Levin and Haley Stevens. The town's City Manager is an African-American man, and the City Council has a female mayor and two male council members; the city manager is a Hispanic woman. The Council-Manager form of government is the most common form of city government in the United States.

Education

Japhet School, a private school, is located in a former YWCA building in Clawson. It moved there in August 2013 from its previous location in Madison Heights. Clawson is entirely within the boundaries of Clawson Public Schools. The city is home to a number of private schools, including Japhet, which moved to Clawson from Madison Heights in 2013. It is also home to two charter schools, one for girls and one for boys. It also has a public high school, which was founded in the 1970s and is now a part of the city's public school system.
