Mason is the county seat of Ingham County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 8,252 at the 2010 census. Mason is the only city in the United States that serves as a county seat ahead of a state capital. The courthouse scenes of the 2011 film Real Steel were filmed in Mason. The city sits upon the Mason Esker, which is one of the longest eskers in the western hemisphere. The Wyeth Corporation began producing baby formula in Mason in the 1900s, but that was discontinued in the 1990s. Today, it is home to the headquarters of Dart Container Corporation. The Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) provides bus service from Lansing to Mason.Jewett Field is a general aviation airport located southeast of Mason. Scheduled passenger air carrier flights are provided by Capital Region International Airport located at the northwest corner of InGHam County. The Mason Connector runs weekdays and Saturday from south Lansing to the southside of Mason, as well as the Mason-Lansing Highway. The state capital of Michigan, Lansing, is located 12 miles (19 km) northward to the west of the city. In the 1800s, Mason was the center of In Gham County activity, even more than was Lansing. In 1877, Lansing attempted to take the status of county seat for itself, but the two cities made an agreement that moved some county offices and courts to Lansing in exchange for Mason remaining the county Seat.

History

Mason is a city in Ingham County, Michigan. It is home to the headquarters of Dart Container Corporation. Michigan is the only state in the country with a capital city that is not also a county seat. The Ojibwa tribe had a visible presence in the town until the early 1900s. In the 1900s, The Wyeth Corporation began producing baby formula in Mason, but that was discontinued in the 1990s. The courthouse scenes of the 2011 film Real Steel were filmed at the InGHam County Courthouse in downtown Mason. The city is home of the Michigan Packaging Company, Gestamp Hardtech, and ingham Intermediate School District. Cattle can still be seen grazing within the city limits. The town of Mason was incorporated as a village in 1865; in 1875 the town became a city. In 1877, Lansing attempted to take the status of county seat for itself, but the two cities made an agreement that moved some county offices and courts to Lansing in exchange for Mason remaining the county seat, and Lansing remained the state capital. The state capital of Michigan is Lansing, which is located 12 miles (19 km) northward in Lansing Township. The Michigan State Capitol is located in the city of Ypsilanti, about 20 miles (32 km) to the north of the Mason city center. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, in which the U.S. Civil War raged in the 1840s and 1850s.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.13 square miles (13.29 km²) Mason sits upon the Mason Esker, which is one of the longest eskers in the western hemisphere. Sycamore Creek flows through the city. The city is located on the U.S. Geological Survey's Mid-America Ranges, which runs from the east to the west of the state. It is the only city in the state to be on the USGS Mid-American Ranges. It has a population of 2,816. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in Mason, and was established in 1903. The United States Geological Survey estimates the city's area at 5.10 square miles, of which 5.11 square miles is land and 0.03 sq miles (0.08 km² is water) The city's population is 2,084. The City of Mason was founded in 1838. It was named after the Mason family, who first settled in the area in the 18th century. The town's name is derived from the Mason esker, a long stretch of land that runs from east to west. The Esker is the longest Esker in the world, reaching more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km) in length. The Mason Eskers is the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, with an area of more than 2,000 square miles. It also is the second-longest esker in North America, after the Great Lakes.

The county seat is Mason, which is located near the center of the county and is home to the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus. About 1.3% of families and 4.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.6% of those age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was2.91.
