Etymology

Ovid was named after Ovid, New York, the hometown of a settler named William Swarthout who migrated here in the mid-1800s. Ovid is now a suburb of New York City. The city's name is derived from the word "Ovid," which means "to write" or "to draw" in Latin. The word Ovid was also used to refer to the town of Ovid in the Middle Ages, when it was known as Ovid's Town. The town's name was later shortened to Ovid and the city was named for Ovid. It is now known as the city of the same name in New York state, as well as the state of New Jersey and New York. The Ovid River runs through the center of the city, and the town is named after the Ovid family, who settled in the area in the 1800s. It was named in honor of the family's first settler, William Swartout, who came to the U.S. in the 18th century. The name Ovid means 'to write' or 'to draw' in Latin, which is how the town got its name. It also means 'Ovid' in English, which means 'one of the rivers that flows through the city' and 'Ovid' in Greek.
