Standish is located roughly 5.2 miles from the Saginaw Bay. The population was 1,458 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Arenac County. The town was platted by John D. Standish in 1871, who owned all of the land in the vicinity. In 1898 the State Bank of Standish opened, (now Citizens Bank) Standish was incorporated as a village in 1893 with James Austin as its president, and later a city in 1903. The same year that prohibition on alcohol took effect, 1920, three illegal moonshine stills were confiscated by the sheriff, and local arrests were made. The city received the deed to Woodmere Cemetery in 1940. On September 22, 1970 the charter of the city of StandISH was adopted, making Standish a home-rule city. In 2010, there were 1,509 people, 619 households, and 353 families living in the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.15 square miles (5.57 km²), all land. The median age in the City was 40 years. The gender makeup of theCity was 48.1% male and 51.9% female. In 2000, there was a population of 1,581 people, and 362. households, with a population density of 7.38 square mile (285.2/km²). Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.15 square miles (5.57 km²), all land. Standish is located roughly 5.2 miles from the Saginaw Bay. The city is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in the state's Upper Peninsula, and in the Mid-Michigan region of the state. It is located on the Michigan Turnpike, which runs through the city. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 1,788. It has a population of 1,816. The town has a history of being called "Standish" or "Saginaw" for short. It was named after the town of Standish, Michigan, which was once part of Michigan. It also has a long history of using the name Standish in place of the name "Michigan" for the town's name, which has been used since the 1800s. The current mayor of the city is John J. McWhorter, who was born in Standish and grew up in the town. He was elected to a second term in 2008, and was re-elected to a third term in 2010. He has served as mayor since 2010, when he was elected for a fourth term in office in 2012, and for a fifth term in 2014, when his term was extended to a sixth. He is the son of a former mayor, who died in a car accident in the early 1990s.
History
The town was platted by John D. Standish in 1871, who owned all of the land in the vicinity. The town was initially named "Granton", but later changed to Standish. In 1898 the State Bank of Standish opened, (now Citizens Bank) Standish was incorporated as a village in 1893 with James Austin as its president, and later a city in 1903. In 1907 Standish got its first automobile dealership, a Buick dealership. In 1918, the first gravel road was built, being a loose dirt road beforehand. The same year that prohibition on alcohol took effect, 1920, three illegal moonshine stills were confiscated by the sheriff, and local arrests were made. The city received the deed to Woodmere Cemetery in 1940. On September 22, 1970 the charter of the city of StandISH was adopted, making Standish a home-rule city. By 1938 the population of Standian was 913, and in 1940 the city was receiving 24-hour electricity service supplied by the Northern Power Company. The first hotel was built in Standian in 18 71 and named The Standish House, by a sheriff of Bay County. The hotel went through several owners before it burned down in March 1902. By 1912, Standish had its first commercial electric lighting for homes and businesses, with power being available between 7 A.M. to Midnight. By 1926, the city had a population of 913 and in 1938, the population was 914.

Education
The city of Standish is in the Standish-Sterling Community Schools District. There is one elementary school and one high school in the district. The district also has a middle school and a high school. It is located in the former Standish and Sterling High School. The city is located on the Ohio Turnpike, which runs through Standish. The Turnpix is a popular destination for tourists to the Ohio River valley and the Great Lakes region of the U.S. The Standish River runs through the center of the city. It also runs through Sterling, which is located to the east of the Turnpikes. The town is home to a number of tourist attractions, such as the Riverwalk and the Lake of the Stars, which overlooks the city from the north and south. The Riverwalk is also known for its scenic overlooks, which can be seen from the city's downtown area. The river also provides a scenic overlook for the rest of the district, as well as for the nearby Sterling-Standish community. The City of Sterling is also the home of the Sterling- Standish High School, which was built in the 1950s and 1960s. The high school was closed in the 1970s and replaced by a new high school, which opened in 2001. The elementary school is in Sterling, and the middle school was opened in Standish in the late 1980s and the high school opened in the early 1990s. There are no high schools in the city, but there is one middle school in Sterling.
Transportation
Indian Trails provides daily intercity bus service between St. Ignace and Bay City, Michigan. I-75, US 23, M-13 and M-61 are major highways in the state. The Saganing Eagles Landing Casino is located south of town in Whites Beach Area. The Standish Historical Depot and Welcome Center is located in the town of Standish, New Hampshire. The White's Beach Historical Depot is located near the town's downtown area. It is located at the base of the Whites Beach Peninsula, south of the city of White’s Beach, New Jersey. The town is home to the Standish Museum and Historical Depot, which was established in 1872. It also houses the White”s Beach Historical Museum, which dates back to 1872, which is located on the same site as the historical depot. The museum is open to the public and has a museum gift shop and a gift shop. It was also built in 1873, and was originally known as Standish Depot. It has since been renamed Standish Beach, and it is now known as Whites Beach. The historic depot was built in the early 1900s, and the Welcome Center opened in the mid-20th century. The historical depot is now called Standish Welcome Center. It stands on the site of the former Standish Historic Depot, where the original Standish Town Hall was built. The Historical Depot has been closed since the 1950s, but a new Welcome Center has been built in its place. The Welcome Center was completed in the late 1960s. Standish is home to the state Standish Maximum Correctional Facility, which operated from 1990 through 2009. In late 2009 the facility was briefly considered as a potential United States site for more than 220 prisoners to be relocated from the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. At the time, Michigan public officials, including both of its senators (Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow) and governor Jennifer Granholm, also objected the idea at the time. Standish is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, near the city of Kalamazoo and the town of Port Huron. The facility is located on the Michigan Turnpike, which was built in the early 20th century.
