Au Gres is a city in Arenac County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 889 at the 2010 census. Au Gres means "gritty stone" in the area, from which the river and the location takes its name. It was first settled in 1862 temporarily by workers on the Saginaw-Au Sable State Road when they reach the location. The first permanent settler was John Edward Bradley, who built the Bradley House in 1866. On August 8, 1867, the location, which was still a part of Bay County, was granted a post office with Bradley as the first postmaster. In 1905, the community was incorporated as a city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.33 square miles (6.03 km²), of which 2.23 sq miles (5.78 km²) is land and 0.10sq miles (0.26 km²") is water. In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.1% under the age of 18, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median income for the city was $18,295 for males and $5,229 for females. In 2000, there were 1,028 people, 468 households, and 285 families living in the city.
History
French explorers named the location Point Au Gres, which stuck on map as late as 1828. It was first settled in 1862 temporarily by workers on the Saginaw-Au Sable State Road when they reach the location. The first permanent settler was John Edward Bradley, who built the Bradley House in 1866. On August 8, 1867, the location, which was still a part of Bay County, was granted a post office with Bradley as the first postmaster. The post office was closed from March 2, 1874 until April 30,1874. The community was incorporated as a city in 1905. It is located on the banks of the Au Sable River, which is a tributary of the Detroit River. The river and the location take their name from the Au G Res stone. The village of Au GRes was established in 1858. It has a population of about 2,000. The city was incorporated in 1905 and is located in Bay County and is on the shores of the Grand River. Its name means "gritty stone" in the area, from which the river and location takes its name, and means "point" or "grievous" in French. The town's name is French for "point of trouble" and "grittier stone" and means to be dangerous or dangerous. Transportation
A ferry service runs from mid-May to mid-October from Au Gres to Charity Island, which is ten miles (16 km) to the east in the middle of Saginaw Bay. Indian Trails provides daily intercity bus service between St. Ignace and Bay City, Michigan. US 23 runs along (or parallels) the Lake Huron shoreline. It has been designated the Sunrise Side Coastal Highway, and runs along the shoreline of the lake. It is also known as the "Sunrise Side Highway" or the "Coastal Highway" because it parallels the shore of Lake Hur on the opposite side of the water. It was built in the 1930s and is one of the oldest highways in the United States. The highway was named for its position along the lake's shoreline, which dates back to the mid-19th century. It runs along a line that runs from St.Ignace to Bay City. It also runs through the town of Au Gre, about 10 miles (15 km) north of the city of St Ignace. The U.S. turns away from the lake on the other side, and turns towards the west. It then turns back towards the lake, and continues along the east side. It ends up in Au GRes at the junction of US 23 and US 6, about 8 miles (13 km) south of the town. The town is located on the shores of the Great Lakes, and has a population of about 2,000.
