History

North Billerica is the primary city name, but also N Billerica are acceptable city names or spellings. The North Billerica station, built in 1867, was completely renovated in 1998. It still serves commuters today as a regular stop on the MBTA's Lowell Line. The area is also home to Iron Horse Park, a former train repair facility. The train station was the starting point for the old narrow gauge Billersica and Bedford Railroad. The station is located at the intersection of Old Elm Street, Lowell Street, and Talbot Avenue at the NorthBillerica Common. It is located on the Boston and Lowell Railroad's main line and was a flag stop on its narrow gauge main line. It was also used as a Social Club by the town's older residents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It closed down in the 1960s after the Fire Station was relocated a mile away to Lowell Street and the Town Hall Annex was closed. The Union Hall was torn down and the land is now part of the train station parking lot. The Post Office was moved to the intersection at the north end of the Common. This intersection is still referred to as 'Post Office Square' by the Town's older Residents. The North Billinga station was completely renovated in 1998 and serves commuters on the Lowell Line and the Boston & Lowell Railroad. It remains a regular station on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Lowell Line, which runs from Boston to Lowell, Massachusetts. The MBTA Lowell Line was built in 1966 and runs on a narrow gauge narrow-gauge track.
