Kenner

Kenner (historically French: Cannes-Brûlées) is a city in Louisiana, United States. It is the largest city in Jefferson Parish, and the largest incorporated suburban city of New Orleans. The population was 66,448 at the 2020 U.S. census, down from 70,517 people in 2000. The city has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39 km²), of which 15.1 square miles of land (39km²) is land and 0.1square miles (0.26 km²) of water. In 1982, Pan Am Flight 759 crashed in a residential area of Kenner when a microburst forced it down. Eight people on the ground were killed, as were all 145 people aboard the aircraft. In 2013, there were 66,975 living in Kenner, and in 2020, the city's population will be 66,450. In 2000, the racial makeup of the city was 68.12% White, 22.55% African American, 0.40% Native American, 3.7% Asian, and 2.24% from two or more races. In 2020, 13.62% of the population were Hispanic or Latino or any race, and 40% were white, 21.48% Black or African American or Hispanic. By 2011, many businesses catering to Hispanics and Latin Americans had opened in the city. In 2010, 12.1% of Kenners have Hispanic or Hispanic populations of any race or Hispanic or Latin American.

History

In 1855, Kenner was founded by Minor Kenner on land that consisted of three plantation properties that had been purchased by the Kenner family. From 1915 to 1931, a New Orleans streetcar line operated between New Orleans and Kenner. "Gypsy" Jem Mace defeated Tom Allen for the heavyweight championship of the bare-knuckle boxing era in Kenner in 1870. In 1982, Pan Am Flight 759 crashed in a residential area of Kenner when a microburst forced it down. Eight people on the ground were killed, as were all 145 people aboard the aircraft. Six houses were completely destroyed and five more substantially damaged. During the 1960s, the construction of Interstate 10 and improvements to Veterans Memorial Highway aided Kenner as a suburb of New Orleans. Kenner's growth began in the late 1950s when developers began subdividing, draining and filling the swampland in the northern half of the city. The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and was once home to the Tchoupitoulas Indians. It is now home to more than 20,000 people. It has a population of about 4,000. The Kenner-New Orleans area is one of the most densely populated areas in the U.S. and is home to some of the country's most famous landmarks, such as the French Quarter and the Garden of the Americas. It was the first land in the New Orleans metropolitan area on which Europeans set foot. René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle landed there in 1682.

Geography

Kenner's coordinates are 30°035N 90°152W (30.009610, 90.250585), and the city has an elevation of 0 ft (0 m) above sea level. Its boundaries are Lake Pontchartrain to the north, the Mississippi River to the south, the unincorporated areas of Metairie and River Ridge to the east, and St. Charles Parish to the west. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Kenner has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39 km²), of which 15.1 sq mi (39km) is land and 0.1sq mi (0.26 km²) is water. Kenner is located on the west side of Greater New Orleans, in Jefferson Parish. The city has a population of 2,816. It is the largest city in the New Orleans metropolitan area, followed by New Orleans East and New Orleans West. The population of Kenner was 2,715 in the 2010 Census. It had a population growth rate of 0.7% in the 1990s, and a population loss rate of 1.2% in 2000. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in Kenner, Louisiana, on the Louisiana-New Orleans border. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the early 1900s. The site is also known as the Battle of New Orleans and the Battles of the Algiers Peninsula.

Demographics

In 2013, there were 66,975 living in Kenner, down from 70,517 people in 2000. At the 2020 U.S. census, the city's population declined to 66,448. The racial and ethnic makeup of Kenner was 64.6% non-Hispanic white, 23.8% Black or African American, 0.5% American Indian or Alaska Native, 3.7% Asian, 5.4% some other race, and 2.3% two or more races. In 2000, the racial makeup of the city was 68.12% White, 22.55% African American, 0.40% Native American, 2.84% Asian and 0.06% Pacific Islander. 13.62% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. A portion of north Kenner is called "Little Honduras" Kenner's Hispanic Resource Center offers English as a second language classes and after school programs for children. In the Hispanic and Latin American population of KenNER, 12 of theCity's tracts have Hispanic or. Latino populations of 15% or more in 2010. By 2011, many businesses catering to Hispanics and Latin Americans had opened in the city. In 2020, 40.01% were non- Hispanic white, 21.48% black or African. American, 4.74% Asian. and 3.80% from other races, and two.24% from two or. more Races. The city's Hispanic population in 2020 is 30.01%.

Economy

At one time L'Express Airlines had its headquarters in Kenner. The airline is now based in New York City. L'express.com is a subsidiary of JetBlue Airways Corporation. JetBlue.com was founded in 1996. The company is now owned by JetBlue's parent company, United Airlines. It is based in Newark, New Jersey, and has a fleet of more than 1,000 aircraft. It also has a hub in N.J. City, which was once home to the airline's headquarters. It has since moved to New Jersey City, where it has a new hub. It was once based in Kennebunk, New Orleans. It now has its own hub in New Orleans, which is located in the French Quarter. The airport is also home to JetBlue, which has a base in New Jersey. It's also based in the city's French Quarter, which once had its own airport. It recently moved to a new location in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie. It had a hub there in the 1970s and 1980s, and later moved to N.Y. City in the 1980s and 1990s. It still has a presence in the Kenner area of the city, which used to be home to L' Express. It currently has an office in the Mid-City area of N.E. Cupp, a suburb of New Orleans that was once part of the airport district. The city is home to a number of businesses, including a bank.

Education

Kenner originally had one high school, Alfred Bonnabel High School, which is located on the border between Metairie and Kenner. The newest high school is a public charter (Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy) Kenner is served by the Jefferson Parish Public School System. Kenner also has the Louis J. Roussel, Jr., Laser Planetarium, named for the New Orleans businessman and political kingmaker Louis Roussels, Jr. The Mercy Center, which houses school offices and a library, gymnasium, and a dedicated room for music classes, was dedicated in August 2004. Private schools include: First Baptist Christian School, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Islamic School of Greater New Orleans, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School. The school, the parish school of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, opened in 1928. In 1951 an annex to the school opened. In 1956, a building with classrooms and a gymnasIUM was dedicated. The current school building was dedicated to the Catholic Church in 1961. Jefferson Parish Library operates the North Kenner Library. It is located in the heart of Kenner, on the north side of the city. It was built in the early 1900s as a public library. It has since been converted into a private school, which opened in the late 1950s. The library was closed in the mid-1980s, but reopened in the 1990s. It currently has a collection of more than 2,000 books.

Government

Kenner is part of Louisiana's 1st Congressional district. The current mayor of Kenner is Michael Glaser. The United States Postal Service operates the Kenner Post Office and the North Kenner post office. The U.S. House of Representatives is represented in Kenner by Steve Scalise. The state senator is Republican Kirk Talbot, a former state House member. The mayor is Republican attorney Debbie Villio. The city is located on the Mississippi River, near the town of Metairie, Louisiana. It is located near the junction of I-10 and I-20. The town has a population of about 2,000. It has a post office, which is run by the United States Post Office. It also has a state senator, who is a Republican. The post office has a town hall, which was founded in 1881. It was the first post office in the state. It opened in 1883. It closed in 1885. It reopened in 1891. It now has a city hall, and a state Senate, and the state House, as well as a state Supreme Court, which sits on the same campus as the University of Louisiana at Kenner. It's in the 1st District of Louisiana, represented in the U.N. Security Council by a Republican, Steve Scalify. The district is also home to the Louisiana State Senate, which has a Republican-turned-Democrat mayor, KirkTalbot. The State House is represented by the Republican attorney Deborah Villio, who was elected to the House in 2006.

Transportation

Public transportation in the city is operated by the Jefferson Parish Department of Transit Administration. Jefferson Transit provides service to points in Kenner, Metairie and New Orleans as well as other locations in incorporated and unincorporated Jefferson Parish. The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (IATA: MSY), the main commercial airport for the New Orleans metropolitan area, is located within the city limits. It serves as a major tax-revenue generator for the city. Kenner is served by Interstate 10, which travels eastwest through the city, and LA 49 (signed as Williams Blvd) which is the city's primary northsouth corridor. The city is also served by U.S. 61 (generally signed as Airline Dr.) which travels through the southern end of the city and connects to LA 49/32nd St. New Orleans Int'l Airport, and Loyola Dr. Traveling westbound from the city line there are exits at Power Blvd.,LA 49 (Williams Blvd.)/ 32nd St., and LOYOLA Dr., which connects to Power Blvd. and Power Blvd, which connects with Power Blvd and Power Ave. Traveled westbound, the interstate travels through Power Blvd/Power Ave and Power St/Loyola St/Power Blvd, and ends at Power Ave/Power St. The airport is located just south of Interstate 10 and is a major source of tax revenue for Kenner and the rest of Jefferson Parish, as it is the only major airport in the area.

Places of interest

Kenner is home to the Ochsner Medical Center and the Pontchartrain Center. The Esplanade Mall is one of the two largest malls located in East Jefferson (the East Bank of Jefferson Parish) The largest man-made sand complex in the United States is located in Laketown. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is New Orleans' international airport. Kenner's Heritage Park is the home of the Kenner Planetarium & MegaDome Cinema and the Rivertown Science Center (sponsored by Freeport McMoran), two fine dining establishments, and a cafe. Rivertown is a historic district located along the original main street of Old Kennerwhere Williams Boulevard hits the Mississippi River. It features numerous museums, shops, and cultural resources. The Kenner Museum of Art is located on the second floor of a building on the first floor of Kenner High School. The museum is open to the public and has a collection of more than 2,000 works of art. The Rivertown Repertory Theatre is located at the center of the historic district, on the third floor of the building. It is the second-largest convention center in the New Orleans metro area. It opened in 1991 and is the only convention center on the Louisiana Gulf Coast. It also features a museum of art and culture called Rivertown's Toy Train Museum, which was closed in 2009. It's also home to Kenner Heritage Park, which is the first of its kind in New Orleans. It has a park that is used for high school football, lacrosse, soccer and includes a running track.
