St. Charles was settled as a coal mining camp in 1872 on land purchased from J.I.D. Woodruff by the Saint Bernard Mining Company. In 1873, the post office was established under the name "Woodruff", but when the city was incorporated in 1874, the name was changed to "St Charles" for now unknown reasons. St. Charles is located in southern Hopkins County at 37°113N 87°3319W (37.184139, -87.555164). U.S. Route 62 passes through the southern part of the community, leading east 6 miles (10km) to Nortonville and west 8 miles (13 km) to Dawson Springs. The city has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km²) of which 0.01 square miles (0.02 km²), or 0.70%, are water. In 2000, there were 309 people, 120 households, and 90 families residing in the city. In 2010, the city had a population of 277, with a population density of 538.0 people per squaremile (209.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.71% White, 0.32% Pacific Islander, and 0.97% from two or more races. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.02. The median income for a household in theCity was $20,469.

History

St. Charles was settled as a coal mining camp in 1872 on land purchased from J.I.D. Woodruff by the Saint Bernard Mining Company. In 1873, the post office was established under the name "Woodruff", but when the city was incorporated in 1874, the name was changed to St. Charles. For now unknown reasons, the city's name was later changed to "St.Charles" for unknown reasons. The city is located on the banks of the St. Louis River, which was once a tributary of the Mississippi River. The town's population was 1,000 in 1873 and 1,200 in 1875. It was incorporated as a city in 1876 and has a population of 2,000. It is now home to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, which has an enrollment of 1,500 students. It also has a college campus, the College of St. Charles, which opened in 1881. It has a post office with a ZIP code of 7053. The name of the city is now St.Charles, but it was first used as a mining camp. The post office is now located in the town's downtown area, on the corner of Main Street and Main Street. It used to be called Woodruff, but when it became a city, it was renamed "St Charles" after the name of a nearby coal mining company. It now has a ZIP Code of 7063, and the name is still used.

The community has a population of 1,071 (2010 Census) and is located at 37.113 N 87.3319 W (37.184 139, 87.555 164). It is located near the junction of U.N. Highway 62 and State Highway 62, leading east 6 miles (10 km) to Nortonville and west 8 miles (13km) to Dawson Springs. It is also near the intersection of State Highway 63 and State Route 62, which leads east 8 miles and west 6 miles. The town has a post office with the ZIP code of 7054. It has a community center with a total population of 2,074 (2010 census) and an area of 0.1 square miles, or 1.2 km², with 0.02 square miles of water. It was founded in the early 1900s by a group of farmers who moved to the area after the Civil War. The area was once known as the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and later as the "Louisville Post-Gazette".
