Frontenac was established as a coal mining town in 1886 in the Cherokee-Crawford Coal Fields in the western Ozark Plateau. On November 9, 1888, Frontenac had the worst mining disaster in Kansas history, when a coal dust explosion killed 44 miners. During the last decade of the nineteenth century and in the early twentieth century the town was populated primarily by immigrant families from eastern and southeastern Europe. It housed various ethnic lodges and drinking parlors despite the state's increasingly severe ban on the distribution, sale, and manufacture of alcoholic beverages. The city is located at 37°2716N 94°4143W (37.454465, -94.695185) According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.06 square miles (13.11 km²), of which, 4.97 squaremile (12.87 km²) is land and 0.09 square mile (0.23 km²") is water. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 3,382, making it the second largest city in Crawford County, Kansas, United States. It has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. In 2010, there were 3,437 people, 1,391 households, and 893 families residing in the city. There were 1,519 housing units at an average density of 305.6 per sq mile (118.0/km²) in 2010.

History

Frontenac is the primary city name, but also Pittsburg are acceptable city names or spellings. Frontenac was established as a coal mining town in 1886 in the Cherokee-Crawford Coal Fields in the western Ozark Plateau. On November 9, 1888, a coal dust explosion killed 44 miners. The town was populated primarily by immigrant families from eastern and southeastern Europe, predominantly Sicilian, Italian, and Slavic people from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its maximum population neared 4,000. It housed various ethnic lodges and drinking parlors despite the state's increasingly severe ban on the distribution, sale, and manufacture of alcoholic beverages. It is located on the Missouri River, which flows into the Little Cottonwood River. The town is located near the junction of the Arkansas and Missouri Rivers, which flow into the Arkansas River and Little Cottonwoods Creek. The Arkansas River is a tributary of the Little Arkansas River, and the Arkansas-Mississippi River Delta runs through the town. The Little Arkansas and Arkansas Rivers are the only rivers that flow through the city of Frontenacs. It has a latitude and longitude of 37.2716 N 94.4143 W, and an area of 4.97 sq miles (12.87 km²), of which, 4.87 sq miles is land and 0.09 sq mile (0.23 km² is water.

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,437 people, 1,391 households, and 893 families residing in the city. There were 1,329 housing units at an average density of 335.2 per square mile (129.3/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 97.70% White, 0.20% African American, 0.,70% Native American,0.07% Asian, 0,43% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population. The median income for a household in theCity was $33,558, and the median income. for a family was $42,214. The city is located in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ National Defense Training Area. The U.N. State Department’s National Defense College of Education and Research is based in the City of St. Louis. The University of Missouri-St. Louis’ School of Public Health is based there. The City of Saint Louis is a member of the College of Saint. Louis University. It is also home to the University of Saint Mary”s College of Medicine, which was founded in 1903.

Area events

Frontenac Town Homecoming is an event in which the Frontenac area celebrates the town's establishment. Festa Italiana, A Taste of Nations is an annual festival held to celebrate the city's heritage. In 2016, community leaders created the frontenac Heritage Hall, a museum of photo collections and memorabilia from the foundation in 1886 to present. Most events are held in downtown FrontenAC (with fishing derby held at Frontenacs City Park, pool games held at frontenacspool.com) and celebrated in late May or early June. Nearly 3,000 people attend Festa yearly. It hosts many different cooks, and patrons can sample foods from family recipes ranging from many different European heritages. It is complete with a large parade, food vendors, beer & wine tents, children's games, contests & tournaments, fishing derby, and a Street Dance in the evening. It is located at the corner of McKay and Crawford Streets, at the top of the hill in the downtown area of the town. It has been open to the public since 2008, and is open to visitors of all ages and skill levels. It also has a barber shop, a restaurant, a bowling alley, a barbershop, a pool hall, and an ice cream parlor. It was founded in 1886, and was named after a local businessman. The town is located on the banks of the Little Canada River, and has a population of about 2,000.

Parks and recreation

Frontenac has a number of parks and recreation facilities. The sports complex is home to the Raiders & Lady Raiders for football, baseball, softball, cross-country, and track & field. The Municipal Swimming Pool is located east of Rotary Park. Frontenac City Park is located on the north edge of town, home to several deep fishing pits. The senior citizens center is located north of downtown FrontenAC. The city has a public library, with several free Wi-Fi hotspots. In popular culture

Children's author Clare Vanderpool's book Moon Over Manifest is based on Frontenac. The 2010 book takes place in fictional Manifest, Kansas in 1936. The book was awarded the Newbery Medal in 2011, the Spur Award, and was named a Kansas Notable Book. The author was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, but frontenac is home to her grandparents. The novel was published in 2010 and has been a bestseller ever since. It was published by Simon & Schuster, which also published the film version in 2011. The movie version was released in 2012. The film version was directed by Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Redford, who also directed the movie version of the book, "Moon Over Manifest" The film was released by Paramount Pictures in 2012 and was released on DVD in 2013. It is the first time the movie has been released in the U.S. since the 1990s. It has also been released on Blu-ray and DVD. The video is available on iTunes and other streaming services such as Amazon.com and Google Play. It will also be available on DVD and Blu-Ray in 2015 and 2016.
