Urbandale is a city in Polk and Dallas counties, Iowa, United States. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the city population was 45,580. It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. In its early days, Urbandale served as a streetcar suburb of Des Moines with four coal mines. The coal mines had closed by the end of the 1940s while streetcar service ended in 1951. The city gained national attention after President Barack Obama held a reelection campaign rally at Living History Farms in 2012. In the 2010 United States Census there were 39,463 people, 15,596 households, and 10,815 families living in the city. In 2000 it had 29,072 people, and there were 11,404 people in the 2000 United States census. In 2010 the city had a total area of 21.94 square miles (56.82 km²), of which 21.92 square miles of land and 0.02 sq miles (0.05 km²) of water. The median income for a household in theCity was $59,744, and the median income. for a family was $70,548. In 2012, the average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.04. The gender makeup of the city was 48.4% male and 51.6% female. History

Urbandale is the primary city name, but also Des Moines are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Urbandale, Iowa. Urbandale was incorporated as a city on April 16, 1917. In its early days, Urbandale served as a streetcar suburb of Des Moines with four coal mines. In 2000, the city had a population of 29,072. In 2012, President Barack Obama held a reelection campaign rally at Living History Farms in the city's west. The city's developed area is in Polk County, but it has expanded westward into Dallas County in recent years. It is located in the heart of Iowa's Des Moines metropolitan area, near the Iowa-Illinois state line and the U.S. Turnpike. In 1950, the population of the city was 1,777; by 1970, it was 14,434; and in 2000, it had 29,000. It was the site of the first U.N. peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan in 1979. It has been home to the National Museum of American History since 1984. It also is the home of the Iowa State Museum, which was established in 1883. The museum is located on the former site of a former coal mine in the town of Woodward, Iowa. In the early 1900s, the town was known as the "Coal City" because of the number of coal mines in the area. The town's population was 298 in 1920; by 1950, its population was 1, 777; and by 2000 it was 29,722. In 2010, it has had a growth rate of more than 20 percent, and in 2011 it had a total population of 28,816.

Urbandale is located in the northwest part of the Des Moines Metro Area at the intersections of Interstates 35 and 80, and Iowa Highway 141. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.94 square miles (56.82 km²) of which 21.92 square miles is land and 0.02 sq miles (0.05 km²), is water. Urbandale has a population of 2,816. The city is home to the University of Iowa, where the football team is known as the Iowa Cornhuskers. The university has a mascot, the Cornhusker, which was named after the city's founder. The football team also has a baseball team, the Iowa City Bulls, who play in the National Football League. The team's mascot is also known as "The Cornhusk", after the town's nickname of "Cornhusker City" The city's football team has a team of the same name, which is called the "Iowa City Bulls". The team also plays in the NFL's Iowa City Red Sox, who have a team named "The Red Sox" for the team's home field. The Red Sox also have a football team called the Red Sox Unlimited, which has a home field of its own, the "Red Sox Memorial Stadium" The team was founded in 1903. It is located on the banks of the Iowa River, near the intersection of I-35 and I-80. The U.S. Highway 141 border runs through the city, and the Iowa State Highway 141 connects the city to Iowa City.

Demographics

As of the 2010 U.S. Census there were 39,463 people, 15,596 households, and 10,815 families living in the city. The median income for a household was $59,744, and the median family income was $70,548 as of a 2007 estimate. The racial makeup of the city was 91.1% White, 2.8% African American, 1.73% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, and 0.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.60% of the population. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.04. The city has a population density of 1,800.3 inhabitants per square mile (695.1/km²), with 16,319 housing units at an average density of 744.5 per squaremile (287.5/ km²) The city's median age was 37.8 years, with 26.3% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 31.3%. Economy

The Urban Loop is a development area in the north/central portion of Urbandale. It is recognized for the easily accessible network of traffic routes. The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), which oversees operations for its multi-state games is located in the Urban Loop. According to the 2017 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the top employers in the city are: The University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Urban Loop was officially named in the fall of 2017. The name Rider Corner was used locally to define the ninety-degree bend in the 35/80 interstate system that runs through the city. Some local media outlets have not discontinued use of the name Rider corner. The city is primarily a residential city, but other development has increased in recent years. This 12-mile stretch of I-35/I-80 has multiple access points to Urband Dale. The top employers are: the University Of Iowa, the Universityof Missouri- St. Louis, and Iowa State College of Medicine. The number of jobs created in the last year is estimated to be over 1,000. The average household income is $54,000, according to the city's 2017 Comprehensive annual financial report. Parks and recreation

Urbandale features 850 acres (3.4 km²) of parks and 33 miles (53 km) of recreational trails that connect to other trails in the Des Moines area. Urbandale is the home of Living History Farms, where Pope John Paul II spoke to a crowd estimated at 350,000 on October 4, 1979. The Buccaneer Arena, home to the Des Iowa Buccaneers hockey team, is also located in the city. The city is located on the Iowa Turnpike, which runs from Iowa City to Iowa City and the Iowa River, which flows through the city to the Iowa City suburb of Des Moines. It is also on the U.S. Interstate Highway System, which connects Iowa to Iowa and Iowa. The town is home to a number of colleges and universities, including Iowa State University, Iowa City College, and the University of Iowa.

Government

Urbandale uses the council-manager form of government. The city council consists of the mayor and five council members, all of which are elected to four-year terms. Education

Urbandale Community School District consists of six elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Des Moines Christian School is in Urbandale. St. Pius X Catholic School of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Des Moines opened in 1956. The area Catholic high school is Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines. It opened with an initial 120 students in September 1956. It is one of the largest Catholic high schools in the U.S., with more than 2,000 students. It was one story tall and had eight classrooms, but an additional eight classrooms were added after construction began on another section on May 1, 1962. That section had two stories. The school was one of four built in the 1950s. It has since been expanded to six stories and has more than 1,000 classrooms. The high school was built in 1962 and has a capacity of 1,500 students. The district also has a middle school and elementary school. It also includes a middle and elementary high school, as well as a junior high and a middle/high school. The community is home to the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Iowa City and Iowa Lutheran University. The city also has the Iowa State Medical Center, which opened in the 1970s. The town has a number of churches, including St. Peter's and St. Paul's. The church is a part of the Des Moines Diocese, which has a mission to serve the needs of the Hispanic community.
