The city's population was 15,392 at the time of the 2020 Census, and it is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. In 2010, there were 8,246 people, 3,115 households, and 2,222 families living in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 95.0% White, 1.1% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, and 1.3% from two or more races. In the city, the average household size was 2.65, and the average family size was 3.15. In 2000, there was a population of 5,098 people, 1,887 households and 1,437 families. History
Grimes incorporated as a city on May 7, 1894. It is named after James W. Grimes, a former U.S. senator and the third governor of Iowa. The city is located on the banks of the Des Moines River, which flows into the Iowa River. It was named after Grimes, who was a former senator and governor of the state.
