The racial makeup of the city was 95.0% White, 1.1% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, and 1.3% from two or more races. In the city, the average household size was 2.65, and the average family size was 3.15. In 2000, there was a population of 5,098 people, 1,887 households and 1,437 families. The median income for a household in Grimes was $56.7, including the poverty line including those under the age of 18 and those over 77.7%. The city is located in Polk and Dallas counties, in the state of Iowa, and is located near the Iowa-Missouri border.

History

It owns a total of more than 100,000 square feet of office space in the city, including an additional 2,500 sq-ft in Grimes' downtown area. Its headquarters are located in a building that was built in the 1970s and 1980s in the heart of the city's downtown area, in what is now a suburb of Grimes, Texas. The high school (grades 10 through 12) and Meadows (grades 8 and 9) form a campus located inside Grimes, and a middle school in Dallas Center. The district also has 4 elementary schools, South Prairie Elementary, North Ridge Elementary, and Heritage Elementary, which are all in Grimes. The school mascots are the Mustangs and the Fillies, and the colors are red and white.Portions of the community of Grimes are also served by the Johnston Community school District. Primarily, areas within the Johnston district, but within the official Grimes city limits are those areas on the east side of Iowa Highway 141 (a.k.a. S.E. Grimes Boulevard). The school district is made up of students from both Polk and Dallas County, as well as the cities of Grimes and Dallas. It was formed in the 1950s, and has been in operation since the 1960s. It is one of the largest school districts in the state, with more than 10,000 students in the district. It has a budget of more than $100 million, and is the second largest school district in Polk County, after the Dallas County School District. It also has the largest enrollment in the county, with about 8,500 students. The schools are located in Grimes, Dallas Center and North Ridge, and South Prairie and Heritage. The elementary schools are all located in the Grimes area of the city.
