Bondurant

Bondurant is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 7,365 in the 2020 census, an increase of 90.8% from the 3,860 population in 2010. It is part of the Des MoinesWest Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named for Alexander C. Bondurant, who was the area's first settler in 1857. On July 19, 2018, an EF2 tornado struck the city and lifted the entire second floor off a house, save for the second-floor bathroom's toilet. The tornado was the second of two EF2 tornadoes that were on the ground simultaneously. The first tornado, which missed Bonduran, provided a clear warning as the second tornado formed shortly afterwards. The racial makeup of the city in the 2010 census was 96.5% White American, 0.6% African American, 0.1% Native Americans in the U.S. and 0.4% other races. Of those 1.7% who were Hispanic and Latino Americans, 1.6%. The city has a total area of 8.40 square miles (21.76 km²), of which 8.38 square miles of land is land and0.02 sq km² is water. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.24. The median age was 29.7 years with the male population being 1,931 (50%) and the female population 1, 929 (50%). History

Bondurant was founded in 1884. The city was named for Alexander C. Bondurant, who was the area's first settler in 1857. In 1892, the Chicago Great Western Railway built a railway station in the city. On July 19, 2018, an EF2 tornado struck the city and lifted the entire second floor off a house, save for the second-floor bathroom's toilet. The tornado was the second of two EF2 tornadoes that were on the ground simultaneously. The first tornado, which missed Bonduant, provided a clear warning as the second tornado formed shortly afterwards. On December 23, 1897, the city was incorporated as a city. It is located on the Illinois Turnpike, which was once called the "Illinois Turnip Highway" The Turnpip Highway was once known as "The Illinois Turnip Road" and was built in the 1880s and 1890s. It was named after the town's first resident, Alexander Bonduard, who arrived in 1858. The Turnip River was once the main water supply for the area. It has since been diverted to the Chicago River, which is now a major waterway. The town's name is derived from the word "turnpike," which means "turn" or "river" in French. The name "Bonduard" means "to turn" in German. The word "Bundurant" translates to "city" in English and "bond" in Spanish.

Geography

Bondurant is located at 41°4139N 93°2741W (41.694304, -93.461488).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.40 square miles (21.76 km²) of which 8.38 square miles is land and 0.02 sq miles (0.05km²) is water. The city is located in the heartland of Iowa, and can be directly accessed by U.S. Route 65 (from the northeast or southwest) or NE 78th Ave (from the west). Bondurant has a population of 2,816. The town is located on the Iowa River, which runs through the city. The river is a tributary of the Mississippi River, and flows into the Iowa-Illinois border. It is also known as "The River City" because it is the only river in the city that runs through its downtown area. It was named after the town's founder, James Bond, who was born in the town in 1881. The community is known for its large amounts of corn and soybean fields. It also has a number of historic buildings, including the Iowa State Capitol, which dates back to the 19th century. The area is known as the "Heartland" because of its location in the state's heartland, which is a major source of grain and other agricultural products. It has also been called the "River City" due to its proximity to the river, which flows through the town.

About 6.3% of those under age 18 and 7.7%. of those age 65 or over. were below the poverty line, including 6.4% from 18 to 24, 34.9% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 6. 3% 65 or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.24. There were 682 housing units at an average density of 142.6 per square mile (55.1/ km²). The racial demographics of the 2000 census showed 1,846 people in 659 households, including 508 families. The age distribution was 33.1%. under the age of 18. For every 100 females, there were 98.1 males.

Education

The BondurantFarrar Community School District operates local area public schools. The district is based in the town of Farrar, which has a population of about 2,000. The Bondurants run their own schools, while the Farrars run local schools.
