Storm Lake is a city in Buena Vista County, Iowa, United States. The population was 11,269 in the 2020 census, an increase from 10,076 in the 2000 census. Storm Lake was named from a lake where it is said a trapper experienced a severe storm. The community is considered one of the state's most ethnically diverse. It is home to Buena. Vista University, King's Pointe Waterpark Resort, the Living. Heritage Tree Museum, and the Santa's Castle holiday attraction. The city is served by a 54-bed critical access hospital, a United Community Health Center, and a community health center. The Storm Lake Times Pilot is a twice-weekly newspaper, which merged with the Pilot-Tribune in 2022. It won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing in 2017 for its coverage of the Storm Lake area. It also has a Spanish-language newspaper, KBVU, which covers the area and a radio station, KAYL/KKIA, which also covers Storm Lake and Iowa Central Community College. As of 2022, the university has 1,982 students on a 60-acre (24 ha) campus within Storm Lake. It hosts a satellite campus for Iowa Central community College, including an industrial training center established in 2021. History

Storm Lake is the primary city name, but also Lakeside are acceptable city names or spellings, Bel Air Beach, Casino Beach, Juniata, Sulphur Springs, West Storm Lake on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Storm Lake, Iowa. As of the 2020 census, Storm Lake was the most ethnically diverse city in Iowa, with over 60% of the population and over 80% of students in the communitys school district identifying as non-white. Storm Lakes diversity is partially a result of refugee resettlement programs in the 1970s, and an abundance of meat packing jobs drawing Latin American migrant workers to the town. The city was named from the lake where it is said a trapper experienced a severe storm. A more romantic legend claims the lake took its name after two star-crossed lovers from opposed Native American bands paddled out for a secret rendezvous, only to be drowned as a sudden storm blew in. The town was incorporated in 1873. Storm Lake is located on the banks of the Iowa River, which runs through the center of the city. It is located in the U.S. state of Iowa.
