Perrysville was platted and surveyed in 1825 by James Blair on the west side of the Wabash River. The town is named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the hero of the Battle of Lake Erie. It is reputed to have been the largest town between Chicago and Terre Haute at the height of its success. In the 2010 census, there were 456 people, 184 households, and 127 families living in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 99.40% White, and 0.60% from two or more races. Indiana State Road 32 passes through the town, and the town has a total area of 0.26 square miles (0.67 km²), all land. The population of Perrysville was 502 in 2000, and 456 in 2010. The median age was 40.2 years; 25% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.4% were from 25 to 44; 26.4%. The gender makeup was 45.6% male and 54.4 per cent female. In 2010, the town had a median household income of $28.5 million; the town's population was 456. In 2000, the population was 502, with 208 housing units at an average density of 826.8 per square mile (319.2/km²). The town had an average household size of 2.48 years, with 32.1% of people living with them, and 52.7% were married couples.

History

Perrysville was platted and surveyed in 1825 by James Blair on a bluff on the west side of the Wabash River. The town is named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the hero of the Battle of Lake Erie. It is reputed to have been the largest town between Chicago and Terre Haute at the height of its success. It became a local center for shipping products to New Orleans on flatboats via the W Abash, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers, and it was also able to receive heavy equipment and manufactured items on steamboats. When the railroads did arrive, and failed to pass through the town, it spelled the eventual end of the vital river traffic, and of the importance of the town of Perrysville. The post office has been in operation since 1827, and the town has a population of 2,000. It was once the largest city in the state, but is now a ghost town with only a handful of residents. It has been the site of the U.S. National Guard's Perrysburg Barracks, which is located on the banks of the Ohio River, near the town's eastern border. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the nearby town of Doylestown, Illinois, which was founded in the 17th century. The site is now home to a museum, the Perrysburg Museum of American Art, which dates back to the 16th century, and a museum of American Civil War history.

Geography

Perrysville is located in the northeast part of the county on the western banks of the Wabash River. Indiana State Road 32 passes through the town.According to the 2010 census, Perrysville has a total area of 0.26 square miles (0.67 km²), all land. The town has a population of 1,071, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town of Perryville. The population of the town was 1,081 at the 2010 Census. The city has a history dating back to the 18th century, when it was first settled. It is the site of the Perryville Lighthouse, which was built in the early 19th century. It was built on a site that is now part of Perry County, Indiana, and is known as the Perry County Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is located on the north bank of the river, near Perryville, Indiana. It has a diameter of 1.5 miles (2.5 km) and is located near the center of the city. The WabASH River flows through the city, and the town is on its western banks. It also has a nick name, "Perryville", which means "the town of the wabash" or "the river" in English. The community's name is derived from the word "perry" meaning "wabash", which is a river that runs through the area. It is the only town in the Army Corps' National Guard Training Area that is not in the state of New Hampshire. The U.N. National Guard is based in Fort Worth, Texas, but has no plans to move there in the near future. It has a population of about 2,000. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. It also hosted the Battle of Gettysburg, which was fought from 1871 to 1883. The Battle was one of the last battles of the Civil War, which ended in 1875. The American Civil War was fought between 1875 and 1881. The battle was the first to be fought in the United States.
