The Town of Fremont is in the western part of Steuben County, northeast of the city of Hornell. The town was formed in 1854 from parts of four other towns: Dansville, Hornellsville, Howard and Wayland. The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York State Highway 17) pass through the south part of the town. As of the census of 2000, there were 964 people, 395 households, and 278 families residing in the town, with the population expected to be 898 at the 2020 census. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 32.4 square miles (84 km²), of which 32.2 sq miles (83 km²) is land and 0.1 sq km² (0.40%) is water. The population was spread out, with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median income for a household was $33,750, and the median family income was $40,714. The per capita income for the town was $18,584. About 10.2% of families and 13.3%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.8% of those under age 18 and 11.9%. of those age 65 or over.

History

The town was formed in 1854 from parts of four other towns: Dansville, Hornellsville, Howard and Wayland. The town has a population of about 2,000 people. It is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the town. It was named after the town of Wayland, Ohio, which was founded in 1853. The city's name is derived from the word "Wayland", which means "way" or "land" in English. It also means "town" in French, which is the language of the area's early inhabitants. It has been known as Wayland since 1854, when it was formed from the towns of Howard and Dansvile. The name Wayland was first used in the 1854 town plan. It became Wayland in 1855, when the town was named for the town's first postmaster, Wayland J. J. Howard. The word Wayland is still used today to refer to the Wayland area of the U.S., which was once part of the state of Ohio. It's also used as a name for Wayland County, in Ohio, where Wayland and Howard are located. The Town's name comes from Wayland Township, where it was once a part of, and is now part of a larger county, Howard County, Ohio. In 1854 the town became a city, and in 1856 it became a town again, becoming a town of its own.
