Winona Lake is a town in Wayne Township, Kosciusko County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 4,908 at the 2010 census. The Winona Lake Historic District includes various historic homes and other buildings that attest to the area's history as a Chautauqua and Bible conference hotspot. It is now contiguous to Warsaw, the two towns having run into each other as they have expanded. The town is best known for the lake it is named after and built on, although the lake was originally known as Eagle Lake. It was the home of famed preacher and professional baseball player Billy Sunday who died in 1935. The now defunct Winona College was founded here, and the winona Lake School of Theology was located here from 1920 to 1970. WinonaLake was also home to the headquarters of The Free Methodist Church until it moved its offices to Indianapolis in 1990. It has a total area of 3.25 square miles (8.42 km²), of which 2.76 square miles. (7.15 km²) (or 84.92%) is land and 0.49 square. miles (1.27 km 2) (or 15.08%) is water. The racial makup of the town was 92.2% White, 1.5% African American, 0.1% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 4.0%. from other races, and 1.2%. from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.4%.

Geography

Winona Lake is located at 41°1315N 85°492W (41.220818, -85.817118). It is now contiguous to Warsaw, the two towns having run into each other as they have expanded. According to the 2010 census, Winona Lake has a total area of 3.25 square miles (8.42 km²) of which 84.92% is land and 15.08% is water. The lake has a population of 1,071. It is located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The town of Winona is located near the town of Warsaw, which is in the state of Michigan. The city of Warsaw is the largest city in the county, with a population in excess of 2,000. The county seat is Warsaw, and the town is located on the Wisconsin-Illinois border. It has an area of 2.76 sq miles (7.15 km²), of which 0.49sq miles (1.27km²) is water, and 0.5sq mile (0.7km²), or 1.27 km², is land. It was founded in 1838, and was named after Winona, Wisconsin, a town that was once part of the state. The village has a history dating back to the early 19th century. Winona was once a small town, but has since grown into a large lake town. The community is now a suburb of Warsaw and the city's population has grown to more than 1,200.

History

The Winona Lake Historic District includes various historic homes and other buildings that attest to the area's history as a Chautauqua and Bible conference hotspot. It is also the home of Grace College and Grace Theological Seminary. The Winona School of Professional Photography was started there in 1912 and was operated by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) until its move to Chicago (Mount Prospect) in 1988. The Billy Sunday Home has been preserved as a museum. The now defunct Winona College was founded here in 1920 and was the headquarters of The Free Methodist Church until it moved its offices to Indianapolis in 1990. The historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. It was originally known as Eagle Lake, although it is now known as Winona Lakes. It has been home to the Grace College since 1920 and the Winona University School of Theology from 1920 to 1970. It also was the home to Homer Rodeheaver from 1912 until his death in 1955, and to famed preacher and professional baseball player Billy Sunday from 1935 until he died in 1955. The winona lake Historic District was listed in 1993 and is located along the eastern shore of the lake in the city of Winona, Indiana.
