Avon

Avon is located in eastern Hendricks County at 39°4547N 86°2316W (39.763160, 86.387900). It is bordered to the north by Brownsburg, to the west by Danville, the Hendricks County seat, and to the south by Plainfield. The population was 12,446 at the 2010 census, and in 2019 the estimated population was 18,706. U.S. Route 36 is the main eastwest road through the town, leading east 13 miles (21 km) to downtown Indianapolis. Indiana State Road 267 formerly crossed US-36 in the center of Avon, but that stretch of 267 was decommissioned in 2013, and the section through Avon is now officially called Avon Avenue. The town's name is after River Avon in England, which is a tributary of the Ohio River. Avon has a total area of 14.34 square miles (37.14 km²) (or 99.3%) of which 14.24 sq miles (36.88 km²), (or 0.7%) is land and 0.1sq miles (0.26km²) is water. The racial makeup of the town was 95.87% White, 026% Native American, 1.41% Asian, 0.72% Pacific Islander, and 1.10% from two or more races. In the 2000 census, there were 6,248 people, 2,127 households and 1,786 families living in the town.

History

The first settlement at Avon was made around 1830. The first post office opened as "Smootsdell", in 1868. It was renamed "Avon" in 1870, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The present name is after River Avon in England. The name Avon is also used to refer to the town of Avon, in Somerset, England, where the first settlement was made in 1830. It is the only town in England to have been named after a river. The town is also the only place in the UK to have had a post office open for more than 30 years. The last post office to close was in 1902, and the name was later changed to Avon. The current name of the post office is Avon Post Office, which opened in 1870 and was renamed Avon post office in 1870. It closed in 1902 and was replaced by a new name, Avon Mail, which was opened in 1903. The post office has been in operation ever since, and is still in operation today. It has been called Avon since 1868 and is located on the banks of the Avon River, near the town's centre. Its name is derived from the river, which runs through the town. The city's name is also derived from its name, which means "river" or "bank" in the local language, and means "bank of water" in English. It also means "River Avon" or "Avon River" in French.

The Avon area is known as the Avon River Valley, which is a tributary of the Ohio River. The river runs through Avon, leading to the town of Danville and Plainfield, the county seat of Hendricks County. It also runs through Indianapolis and Marion County, where Avon lies on the Marion County line. The city of Avon was founded in 1858. It is the site of the first post office, which opened in 1859. The current post office was established in 1881. It has a current population of 1,856.

As of the 2010 census, there were 12,446 people, 4,457 households, and 3,384 families living in the town. There were 4,742 housing units at an average density of 333.0 per square mile (128.6/km²) The racial makeup of the town was 86.7% White, 5.9% Black, 0.3% Native American, 3.3%. Asian, 0,1% Pacific Islander, 1.4% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3. percent of the population. The median income for a household in the city was $66,782, and $68,205 for a family. The per capita income for the town is $24,740. About 2.7%. of the city's residents are below the poverty line, including 2.9%. of those under age 18 and 15.8% of those 65 or over. The town's population was 6,248 as of the 2000 census, with 2,240 people, 2,127 households and 1,786 families. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.20. In the town, the population was spread out, with 33.2%. under the age of 18, 4.8%. from 18 to 24, 39.3! from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who were 65 years of age or older.

Education

Avon's public school system is the Avon Community School Corporation. The Avon Marching Black and Gold, led by Jay Webb, Matt Harloff, Daniel Wiles, Karl Hartman, and Robert Burns, was ranked number one in the state of Indiana by the Indiana State School Music Association. The longest consecutive and uninterrupted national championship streak is three years, held by three schools: Marian Catholic High School (1987, 1988, 1989), Avon High School, (2008, 2009, 2010) and Carmel High School. Avon has a lending library, the Avon-Washington Township Public Library. The city's mascot is Avon Oriole, which is also the name of its high school marching band, which has been ranked as one of the best in the country by the Bands of America Grand Nationals for the first time in the school's history. The town is home to Avon Elementary School, Avon Middle School, and Avon Intermediate School. It also has a private school, Kingsway Christian School (grades K8) and Our Shepherd Lutheran School (grades PK8) Avon is located on the Indiana Turnpike, which runs from Bloomington to Bloomington. It is also home to the Indianapolis International Airport, which was built in the 1930s. It was the first international airport in the U.S. and was the second to open in the United States in the 1950s. The airport was the site of the first air traffic control tower in the world.
