Jeffersonville

Jeffersonville is a city and the county seat of Clark County, Indiana, United States. It lies directly across the Ohio River to the north of Louisville, Kentucky, along I-65. The population was 49,447 at the 2020 census. Jeffersonville was briefly the de facto capital of the Indiana Territory in 1813 and 1814. In 1819 the first shipbuilding took place in Jeffersonville, and steamboats would become key to Jeffersonville's economy. In 1862, two area regiments established the first military camp in the city. The location was christened Camp Joe Holt, and the name was retained when the camp was converted to a hospital called Joe Holt Hospital. During the Civil War, Jeffersonville served as one of the principal gateways to the South. It was home to Jefferson General Hospital, the third largest hospital in the country at that time. The city was also the first stop on the Underground Railroad, providing a route for fugitives to escape to Canada through Clark County in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is now home to the Indiana State Museum, which was founded in 1801 and is the oldest state museum in the United States, with a collection of more than 1,000 works of art dating back to the 17th century. The museum is located in the former town of Port Fulton, which is now within Jeffersonville and is home to a museum of American art. The state museum's collection of art is the largest of its kind in the U.S.

History

Jeffersonville is the primary city name, but also Jeff, Jeffersonvlle, Utica, Watson are acceptable city names or spellings, Cementville on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is City of Jeffersonville. Fort Finney was established near where the Kennedy Bridge is today in 1786. In 1802, Jeffersonville replaced Springville as the county seat of Clark County. Jeffersonville was briefly the de facto capital of the Indiana Territory in 1813 and 1814. Jefferson General Hospital was the third largest hospital in the country at the time of its opening in 1866. The hospital was built to replace a Confederate sympathizer, U.S. Senator Jesse Bright, who was killed in 1864. During its existence the institution cared for more than 16,000 patients and served more than 2,500,000 meals. The Quartermaster Depot was built in the early 1800s. The city is located directly opposite Louisville, Kentucky, and was one of the principal gateways to the South during the Civil War. It was the first and largest route for fugitives crossing the Ohio River at Louisville in 1830. It is also the location of the first steamboat, the Hyperion, which was built by James Howard in 1834. The annual Steamboat Days festival is held in September to celebrate Jeffersonville's heritage. The town's name is derived from Jefferson, a French word for "boat" or "boat." The town is also known as "Jeffersonville" because of its location on the Ohio river.

About 6.9% of families and 10.1%. of the residents were below the poverty line, including 13.9%. of those under age 18 and 7.2. of those age 65 or over. The city is located on the U.S.-Mexico border. It is located near the border with Mexico. It has a population of 44,000, and a population density of 1,319.8 per square miles (509.6 per km²). The city's population is expected to grow to 44,500 by the end of the year, and to 45,000 by the year 2050. The population is predicted to reach 50,000 in the 2030s.

Economy

A plethora of businesses call Jeffersonville home, including both locally owned and operated companies, as well as national ones. As of 2020, some of the top employers in the city included: Greater Clark County Schools (1600), Clark Memorial Hospital (1500), and Republic Bank & Trust of Indiana (721) Jeffersonville is home to the United States Bureau of the Census's National Processing Center - the bureau's primary center for collecting, capturing, and delivering data.Until 2018, Jeffersonville was the home of Jeffboat, the largest inland shipbuilder in the US. At its peak, the barge manufacturer employed over 13,000 employees. The company closed due to an overproduction of barges, marking the end of 200 years of shipbuilding in Jeffersonville. The city is also notable for being the birthplace of the pizza chain Papa John's Pizza, which was founded there in 1968. The River Ridge Commerce Center is an industrial zone located on the outskirts of Jeffersonville near Charlestown, Indiana. It now hosts a variety of industries. These include manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, food & beverage, life sciences, logistics, and more. It also employs 1200 to more than 6000 people, making it one of southern Indiana's largest employers. It is located on land previously comprising part of the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, and is one of the state's largest industrial zones. It was once home to a large shipbuilding company, but closed in 2018 due to a lack of barge production.

Education

Jeffersonville public schools belong to the Greater Clark County school system. Public schools include Franklin Square Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Elementary and Northaven Elementary. Private schools include Sacred Heart Catholic School and Parkview Middle School. Alternative schools include Clark County Middle/High School, Corden Porter School and River Valley Middle/ high School. The city's public schools are part of the Clark County School System.

The St. Louis Kiwanis Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The city will host a number of events, including a parade and a fireworks display on the Kentucky River.
