Herrin

Herrin is a city in Williamson County, Illinois. The population was 12,352 at the 2020 census. The city is part of the Marion-HerrIn Micropolitan Area and is a part of Carbondale-Marion-Heraerin, Illinois Combined Statistical Area with 123,272 residents. The settlement of Herrin started out as scattered settlers on Herring's Prairie named for the first permanent settler Isaac Herring, a Baptist preacher. The trails from Jordan's fort to Humphreys' ford on the Big Muddy River intersected the old trail from Lusk's ferry at modern-day Golconda to Kaskaskia, which was first settled by French colonists. The community incorporated as a village on March 21 1898, and as a city two years later on April 17 1900. Herrin was the site of the 1922 Herrin massacre, resulting in the deaths of 23 miners and guards. The Dorsey Brothers and Frank Sinatra played bocce ball and performed there. Three future presidents came to Herrin during campaigns: Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Gerald Ford came to the Herrin- Marion airport in the 1970s. At one time Herrin had 10 hotels, many clothing stores, grocery stores as well as department stores. Of the grocery stores Herrin has had over the years, Louie's P&R is the only local store to remain local. The Herrin area has a total of 9461 square miles (2450 square miles), which is land and water.

History

Herrin was the site of the 1922 Herrin massacre, resulting in the deaths of 23 miners and guards. The community incorporated as a village on March 21 1898, and as a city two years later on April 17 1900. At one time Herrin had 10 hotels, many clothing stores, grocery stores as well as department stores. Of the grocery stores Herrin has had over the years, not including national chains, Louie's P&R is the only local store to remain open. The Dorsey Brothers and Frank Sinatra played bocce ball and performed there. Three future presidents came to Herrin during campaigns: Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. The Herrin-Marion airport opened on Memorial Day 1924 with 5000 in attendance. It had a salt water swimming pool, rides, and a theater. When mining made the town prosperous, herrin had a recreational park known as White City Park. It opened on May 26 1864. The town was named for the first permanent settler Isaac Herring, a Baptist preacher. The trails from Jordan's fort to Humphreys' ford on the Big Muddy River intersected the old trail from Lusk's ferry at modern-day Golconda to Kaskaskia, which was first settled by French colonists. In 1816, two years before Illinois became a state, Herring paid $2 an acre for the 160 acres (65 ha) He lived to the west in Jackson County, the land entry was the northeast quarter off Section 30, Township 8 South, Range 2 East of the Third Principal Meridian.

Geography

Herrin is located at 37°489N 89°141W (37.802412, -89.028093).According to the 2010 census, Herrin has a total area of 9.461 square miles (24.50 km²) Of this, 9.23 square miles of land (97.56%) is land and 0.231 sq miles (0.60km²) (or 2.44%) is water. The town has a population of 1,788. It is located in the eastern part of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the region known as the "Yucatani Peninsula" The town's population was 1,856 at the time of the census in 2010. The city's population has grown to 1,938 since the census was taken in the year 2000. It has an area of 9.461 sq miles, or 24.50 km², of which 9.3 square miles (23.91 sq mi) is land. It also has a water area of 1.3 square miles, (or 0.60 km²), of which 1.2 square miles (2.44 km² is water) The town is located on the Yocatani River, which runs through the town. The Yocotani River flows through Herrin. The Herrin River is a tributary of the San Francisco River. It flows through the city and into the San Fernando River.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 11,298 people, 4,831 households, and 3,014 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,377.5 inhabitants per square mile (531.9/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 96.72% White, 0.92% African American,0.35% Native American, and 0.67% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.95% of the population. The city's median income was $28,532, and the median income for a family was $39,108. About 13.6% of families and 16.0% of residents were below the poverty line, including 23.7% of those under age 18 and 11.2% ofThose age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was2.88. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there are 84.2 males. For each 100 females age 18 or over, there is 81.5 males. The per capita income for the city is $16,782. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city has a population of 11,300, up from 11,000 in the 1990s. The current population estimate is 11,200. The 2010 U.N. World Population Census estimates the population of the country is 10,000. The United States Census Bureau has the city's population at 11,400.

Sister city

On the 17th of July 2015 mayors Steve Frattini and Flavio Polloni signed the Twinning Proclamation Act to officially declare Herrin and Cuggiono as sister cities. The act was passed by the Italian Parliament and signed by the mayor of Herrin on July 17, 2015. Herrin is a city in the province of Liguria, Italy. The city has a population of around 2,000 people. It is located in the region of the same name as Herrin. The town is located near the town of Cuggione, on the outskirts of the city of Herrini. The twinning act was approved on July 18, 2015 by the mayors of Herrin, CuggIONo and Herrino, and was signed by the mayor of Herrin, Steve Frattini, on July 17, and Flavio Polloni, on July 18, 2015. The act was signed by the mayors of herrin and Cuggioni on July 17 and was signed by both maintains the twinning proclamation act was signed by Steve Frattino and Flavio  Polloni, and it was officially declared as sister cities on the 17th of July 2015 by the mayor's office.

Events and festivals

Herrin hosts the annual HerrinFesta Italiana, a Memorial Day weekend celebration of the town's Italian heritage. The five-day event often draws over 60,000 people for live music, authentic Italian food, a carnival, Bocce Ball tournament, and "Bigga Nose" and pasta-eating contests. Past artists and bands include Survivor, Dixie Chicks, Night Ranger, Josh Gracin, Blake Shelton, Blue Öyster Cult, Florida Georgia Line, Eddie Money, The Guess Who, Kansas (band), Starship, Papa Roach, Saving Abel, Theory of a Deadman, Foreigner (band) and Collective Soul. On the 17th of July 2015 Herrin and Cuggiono, Italy, officially became sister cities after their mayors, Steve Frattini and Flavio Polloni, both signed a Twinning Proclamation Act. The town of Herrin is home to the Herrin Festival, which is held every year on the last weekend of May. The festival is a free, family-friendly event that celebrates Herrin's history and culture. The Herrin festival is held on the grounds of the historic Herrin Town Hall, which was built in the 19th century. It is the only town in Herrin to have a museum dedicated to the history of the Italian community. The museum is open to the public and has a collection of Italian and American art, as well as other artifacts and memorabilia. Herrin also has its own version of the American flag, which has been flown over the town since the 1800s.
