Gridley

Gridley is a village in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population consisted of 1,432 people at the end of the 2010 census. The village of Gridley was founded in 1869 and named after General Asahel Gridley, a noted early Republican, land investor, political backer and client of Abraham Lincoln, and a descendant of a Colonel Gridley who served at the Battle of Lexington. The town was established when Peoria and Oquawka Railroad crossed the state from west to east. Gridley is located on U.S. Route 24 about 7 miles (11 km) east of El Paso. It is also about that distance west of Chenoa. According to the 2010 Census, Gridley has a total area of 1.23 square miles (3.19 km²), all land. The median income for a household in the village was $46,458, and the median income. for a family was $51,908. About 5.9% of families and 6.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.6% of those under age 18 and 4.6%. The town is part of the Bloomington-Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the city of Bloomington and the town of Highland Park. It was laid out on November 25, 1856 by Thomas Carlyle (c. 1832 -?) and George Washington Kent (1820-1901). After considering the names Kent, Carlyle, and Gardner, for the governor of Massachusetts, it was decided to name named the town for Bloomington banker, lawyer, and land developer AsaHel Gridley (1810-1881).

Geography

According to the 2010 census, Gridley has a total area of 1.23 square miles (3.19 km²), all land. The town has a population of 1,788. Gridley is located at the junction of the U.S. Turnpike and the Colorado River. It is the only town in the town of Gridley with a population over 1,000 in the 2010 Census. The city's population was 1,856 in the census-designated place (CDP) of 2010. The CDP is the largest CDP in the state, with a total population of 2,769. The area has a land area of  1.23 square miles (3.19 km²) and an area of 1,738.5 square miles  (3,739.5 km²) according to the CDP 2010 census. It has an elevation of 2,741.5 feet (739 meter) and a population of 1,800.0 feet (337.5 meters) in Gridley. The community has a water supply of 2.3 square miles (4.2 square kilometers) and has a sewerage system. It also has a well-documented history of flooding in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was the site of the Gridley Fire Company, which was founded in 1881. The Gridley Water Company was established in 1883.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,411 people, 550 households, and 387 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,215.6 inhabitants per square mile (469.3/km²). There were 569 housing units at an average density of 490.2 per squaremile (189.3 /km²) The racial makeup of the village was 97.73% White,0.28% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population. The median income for a household was $46,458, and $51,908 for a family. The per capita income was $19,752. About 5.9% of families and 6.4%. of the residents were below the poverty line, including 9.6% of those under age 18 and 4.6. of those age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.16. In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.6%. under the age of 18, 6.9%. from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The. median age was 37 years. For every 100 females,there were 97.3 males.

History

Gridley was laid out on November 25, 1856 by Thomas Carlyle (c. 1832 -?) and George Washington Kent (1820-1901) It was named for Bloomington banker, lawyer, and land developer Asahel Gridley (1810-1881) The town was established when Peoria and Oquawka Railroad crossed the state from west to east. By 1900 the town had a population of 735. On May 4, 1901 a fire destroyed most of downtown Gridley. In 1925 it was announced that passenger rail traffic would be closed on Sundays. In the early 1920s the town served six passenger trains in both directions. Then in June 1924, the newly paved Route 8, today US-24, opened. The hard road quickly destroyed passenger traffic and the town was quickly rebuilt. The town has been a railroad town since the third decade of the Twentieth Century; in the early 20th century it was a rail town. It is now a small town of about 2,000 people. It was founded in 1856 and was named after Gridley, a banker and lawyer who was working for the town's co-founder, Carlisle Carlyle. Gridley is located in central Illinois near the Mackinaw River and the Illinois-Illinois border. It has been home to the U.S. Army Signal Corps since the mid-19th century. It also has been the home of the Illinois National Guard since the early 1900s.
