Bloomington is a city and the county seat of McLean County, Illinois, United States. It is adjacent to the town of Normal, and is the more populous of the two principal municipalities of the BloomingtonNormal metropolitan area. The 2020 Census showed the city had a population of 78,680, making it the 13th most populated city in Illinois, and the fifth-most populous city in the state outside the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Bloomington is 135 miles (217 km) southwest of Chicago, and 162 miles (261 km) northeast of St. Louis. The Bloomington area is home to Illinois Wesleyan University and Illinois State University. It also serves as the headquarters for State Farm Insurance and Country Financial. The city is at an elevation of 797 feet (243 m) above sea level. In the 2010 census, there were 76,610 people and there were 34,339 housing units at an average density of 1,261 square miles (1,487 square km) The racial makeup of the city was 77.5% White, 10% African American, 0.3% Native American, and 0.9% Asian. In 2021, Mboka Mwambwe will be elected as the city's first black mayor, and he will serve until the end of the year. In 2013, Bloomington celebrated its 50th anniversary of its incorporation. The first Euro-American settlers arrived in the early 1820s. Abraham Lincoln was working as a lawyer in nearby Springfield, Illinois.
Geography
Bloomington is located at 40°2903N 88°5937W. The city is at an elevation of 797 feet (243 m) above sea level. According to the 2010 census, Bloomington has a total area of 27.229 square miles (70.52 km²) of which 99.97% is land and 0.009 sq miles (0.02 km²), or 0.03% is water. Bloomington is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Illinois Institute of Technology. The University of Iowa has a chapter of the Bloomington Kiwanis Club, which was founded in 1883. The club is one of the oldest in the U.S. and has a history dating back to the 18th century. It is located on the Illinois River, which runs through the center of the city. The town has a population of 2,816. It has a latitude and longitude of 40.2903 nautical miles (88.5937 W), and an area of 27.22 square miles, or 70.50 km², of which 27.22 sq miles is land. It also has a small amount of water, at 0.02 sq miles, (or 0.01 km²). The city's name is derived from the town of Bloomington, Illinois, which is located in the state's eastern part. It was named after the town's first postmaster, who was born in 1881.

It has a population of 3,000 and an average annual rainfall of 1.7 inches (43 mm) It has an average monthly temperature of 14.6 degrees (9.7 °C). The average yearly precipitation is 1 inch (43mm) and a monthly average of 4.2 inches (113 mm) It is the only county in Illinois that has a temperature of more than 10 degrees (7.7°C), which is the highest in the state. The city's average annual precipitation is 2.7 inches (50 mm), which makes it the second-highest in the country.
History
Bloomington was named as county seat on December 25, 1830, when McLean County was created. People came from all over to trade and do business at the town's center, known today as Downtown Bloomington. In 1997, Judy Markowitz was elected as the city's first female and Jewish Mayor. In 2021, Mboka Mwilambwe will be elected as Bloomington's first black mayor. In 1900 an officer on patrol discovered a fire in a laundry across the street from the old city hall and police station. He sounded the alarm but the fire destroyed the majority of the downtown, especially the areas north and east of the courthouse. However, the burnt area was quickly rebuilt from the designs of local architects George Miller and Paul O. Moratz. The downtown area became a regional shopping center attracting trade from adjoining counties. Labor unions grew in strength. In 2002, Bloomington would also approve a gay rights ordinance in 2002. The city's performing arts center began restoration in the early 1990s. In 2007, an arena was built in downtown Bloomington and the city’s performing arts centre began restoration. In 2010, the city approved a gay-rights ordinance. In 2012, the Bloomington City Council approved a bill that would allow gay marriage in the city. The bill was later approved by the Illinois House of Representatives and passed by the state Senate. In 2013, the state legislature passed a bill allowing gay marriage, but it was not allowed in the state of Illinois.

As of the census of 2010, there were 76,610 people and 30,454 households within the city. The City of Bloomington and McLean County comprise the fastest-growing metropolitan area in Illinois. Transportation
Interstates 39, 55 and 74 intersect at Bloomington. US highways 51 and 150 and Illinois state route 9 also run through the city. The legendary highway U.S. Route 66 once ran directly through Bloomington's downtown and later on a bypass to the east. Central Illinois Regional Airport on Route 9 is served by four airlines (Delta Air Lines, American Eagle, Frontier and Allegiant Air) and five rental car agencies. A record 559,481 passengers flew to or from CIRA in 2010. It is Illinois' second busiest Amtrak station after Chicago, servicing more than 209,000 passengers in fiscal year 2010.Connect Transit has 11 color-coded fixed routes in the area; a lift-assisted paratransit service called Connect Mobility and a campus shuttle for ISU called Redbird Express. The Bloomington-Normal Public Transit System operates the city's internal bus system, and several intercity bus lines operate northsouth and eastwest service through theCity. The city is serviced by passenger rail, bus service, andSeveral airlines, including Greyhound Lines and Burlington Trailways, which offer service to/from Peoria, Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa, Champaign/Urbana, Indianapolis, and St. Louis. It also has direct flights to Atlanta (Delta), Chicago (American Eagle), Dallas-Ft. Worth, Detroit (Delta) and Minneapolis/St. Paul (Delta). Additional service includes nonstop flights to Sanford, Florida (Allegiant), St.Pete/Clearwater (allegiant).
Attractions
The Grossinger Motors Arena (formerly the U.S. Cellular Coliseum) in southwest downtown Bloomington opened in 2006. The Bloomington Ice Center (Formally known as Pepsi Ice Center) is an indoor public ice skating facility operated by the Bloomington Parks & Recreation Department. Since 2014, it is the home rink of the Central Illinois Flying Aces of the United States Hockey League, as well as hosting certain games of Illinois State University's club hockey team and local youth hockey programs. The Miller Park Zoo's newest exhibit is the Tropical America Rainforest Animal Building. Bloomington-Normal Constitution Trail is a 24-mile (39 km) walking, cycling and rollerblading trail that runs through the city. The city's parks are open from 6:00am to 10:00pm, alcoholic beverages and smoking are prohibited and pets are allowed in all parks on a leash. The Department maintains over 1,100 acres (4.5 km²) of land including 44 park sites and 3 golf courses. The Evergreen Racket Club provides indoor tennis courts. Outdoor public swimming pools are located at O'Neil Park (west) and Holiday Park (east). The YMCA, YWCA, and private health clubs operate private health and indoor pools. The department also operates the Children's Zoo, Children's Animals of Asia, and the Kattho Zoo, which features a tortoise tortoise, Sumatran tiger, river otter, Galatasaray tigers, reindeer bears, bald eagles, pallas cats and red wolves.

A number of special events such as Tour de Chocolat, Farmers' Market, Tour de Metro, Pub Crawl, and Once Upon a Holiday, offer a chance to experience the district. The city is the only town in the United States where Beer Nut's Brand Snack is made. The town has a reputation for being a great place to live and work, especially in the summer months. It also has a great nightlife, with many restaurants and bars offering a variety of food and drink options. It is located on the Illinois Turnpike, one of the busiest roads in the U.S. and the only turnpike in the state. It has a population of more than 100,000, making it the second-largest city in Illinois after Chicago. Bloomington has the third-largest population of people living in Illinois, behind Chicago and St. Louis. It was the site of the first World War II memorial, which was built in 1871.
