Westmont is a community of 5.03 square miles in area with a 2010 population of 24,685. It is located approximately 18 miles (29 km) west of the Chicago Loop in the southeastern portion of DuPage County. The area known as Westmont was inhabited by the Potawatami until the year 1833. The development of the Illinois-Michigan Canal, authorized by the State of Illinois in the 1820s but delayed in construction until the 1830s, contributed to Westmont's early growth. In the early 1900s, plats for the Village of Westmont were laid out and roads were dedicated; incorporation, decided by a vote of 41-28, followed in 1921. The Village did not encourage concentrated commercial or industrial growth until the 1950s, with the development of some light service companies, industrial firms, and wholesaling firms. It was not until the 1960s and 1970s the Westmont began to grow in earnest; Westmont High School did not open until 1974. New subdivisions and multiple family housing units led to the tripling of the population. The village was officially incorporated on November 4, 1921; Vince Pastor served as the first president of the Village Board. Westmont is located at 41°4740N 87°5835W (41.794480, -87.976433). History

The Village did not encourage concentrated commercial or industrial growth until the 1950s, with the development of some light service companies, industrial firms, and wholesaling firms. It was not until the 1960s and 1970s the Westmont began to grow in earnest; Westmont High School did not open until 1974. New subdivisions and multiple family housing units led to the tripling of the population. The town transitioned gradually from an agricultural community to a commuter community, with early growth and development centered around the railroad station. In 1858, local incorporated towns and villages petitioned the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad to build a branch line from Chicago to Aurora, Illinois that would pass through their towns. The railroad line was approved, and the first train in 1864. "Gregg's Milk Station," from which Westmont developed, was a stop to load agricultural and dairy products. The village was officially incorporated on November 4, 1921; Vince Pastor served as the first president of the Village Board. It is located on U.S. Route 34.
Geography
Westmont is located at 41°4740N 87°5835W (41.794480, -87.976433). It is bounded on the north by the Village of Oak Brook, on the east by the village of Clarendon Hills and on the south by the City of Darien. According to the 2010 census, Westmont has a total area of 5.136 square miles (13.30 km²) (or 97.94%) of which is land and 0.106square miles (0.27 km²), (or 2.06%) is water. It is nearly wholly within Downers Grove Township. Westmont is home to the Westmont High School, which was founded in 1903. The school is one of the oldest in the Chicago area, having been founded in 1904. It was the first high school in the state of Illinois to graduate with a bachelor's degree. The high school was also the first in the city to graduate from high school with a master's degree in 2000. It has been home to a number of high schools, including the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology. It also has a high school that was the site of the World War II-era Battle of the Bulge. The town has a post-secondary school that is part of the Illinois State University System. The Westmont Post-secondary School has been in existence since the 1950s. The college has a campus that is now part of Illinois State College.

The racial makeup of the village was 78.02% White, 5.38% African American, 0.13% Native American, 11.95% Asian, 2.41% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. Westmont is located on the Illinois Turnpike, which runs from Chicago to Illinois City, Illinois. It is also on the Chicago River, which flows through Westmont to the city of Chicago. The village has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the Westmont area of the village. The Village is located near the intersection of Interstate 88 and Interstate 55, and is also near the junction of Interstate 294 and I-355, which run from the east to the west. It also has a post office, which serves the village of Westmont until the end of the year. The town has a library, which is open to the public. It has a park, which has a playground, and a baseball field, which was built in the 1960s. The Westmont High School is located in the village, which opened in the 1970s. It was the first high school in the Chicago area to open in the area, and was later the site of several other high schools, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Illinois State University.
