Lombard

Lombard is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States, and a suburb of Chicago. The population was 43,165 at the 2010 census. Lombard was officially incorporated in 1869, named after Chicago banker and real estate developer Josia Lewis Lombard. In 2008, Lombard declared April 6 to be "Ellen Martin Day" in commemoration of Ms. Martin's historic victory for women's suffrage. The area was originally part of Potawatomi Native American landscape, the Lombard area was first settled by Americans of European descent in the 1830s. In 2011, the Peck House was inducted into the National Park Service's Network to Freedoma list of verified Underground Railroad locations. In 1927, the estate of Colonel William Plum, a local resident, was bequeathed to the village. The Plum property included his home, which became the Helen M. Plum Memorial Library and a large garden containing 200 varieties of lilac bushes. This garden became a public park, Lilacia Park. The Lilac Festival and parade in May is a 16-day festival ending in mid-May. It starts with the Lilac Queen coronation and her coronation. Many lilac events take place in the park, including a formal ball, concerts, wine tasting, and arts and crafts fair. The first Lilac Princess was Adeline Fleege, whose name was later changed to Adeline Gerge. The grand finale is the Princess Adeline Parade in 1930.

History

Lombard is the primary city name, but also Glendale Heights, Glendale Hts are acceptable city names or spellings, Flowerfield on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Village of Lombard. Lombard was officially incorporated in 1869, named after Chicago banker and real estate developer Josia Lewis Lombard. In 2011, the Peck House was inducted into the National Park Service's Network to Freedoma list of verified Underground Railroad locations. William LeRoy built a home in the Italianate style on Lombard's Main Street in 1881. The house would eventually become the home of Harold Gray's parents and the studio of the originator of Little Orphan Annie cartoon strip. In 1927, the estate of Colonel William Plum, a local resident, was bequeathed to the village. The Plum property included his home, which became the Helen M. Plum Memorial Library, and a large garden containing 200 varieties of lilac bushes. This garden became a public park, Lilacia Park. In 1916 Illinois women could vote in national elections, but the 19th Amendment (the Women's Suffrage Amendment) was not passed until 1920. Ellen Martin then became the first woman in Illinois to vote, and one of the first in the entire U.S. in 1916. She died in a car accident on April 6, 1918. The Lombard Historical Society is a non-profit organization based in the village of Lombard, Illinois. It was founded by a group of local men in the mid-19th century.

Lilac Festival

Since 1930, Lombard has hosted an annual Lilac Festival and parade in May. "Lilac Time in Lombard," is a 16-day festival ending in mid-May. Many lilac themed events take place, including a formal ball, concerts, wine and beer tasting in the park. The first Lilac Princess in 1930 was Adeline Fleege, whose later married name was Gerzan. The grand finale is Lombard's LilAC Festival Parade. The festival ends with a Mothers' Day Brunch, arts and crafts fair, and tours of the park, and the Lilac Queen coronation. The Lilac festival is free and open to the public.

Education

Lombard's high schools (9-12) belong to Glenbard Township High School District 87. Lombard's elementary and middle schools belong to Lombard School District 44 or DuPage School District 45. The town's high school is shared with the neighboring town of Glen Ellyn, thus the creation of the portmanteau word "Glenbard" Lombard is home to the College Preparatory School of America, Montini Catholic High School, and Willowbrook High School. It is also the home of Lombard High School's football team, the Lombard Lancers, as well as a number of private schools and private day care centers. The Lancers' mascot is the Lancer, and the team's colors are red, white, and blue. The team's mascot is also known as "The Lancers", a reference to the football team's color scheme. It also has a mascot of the same name, which is white and blue, and is called the "Lard Lancer" The Lards' football team is known as the 'Larders' and is based in Lombard, Illinois. It has a team of players, the Larders, who are known for their hard work and camaraderie. They also have a band called the Lards, which plays at the Lombards' home field, Lombard Park. Geography

Lombard is located at 41°5234N 88°054W (41.875979, -88.015060).According to the 2010 census, Lombard has a total area of 10.449 square miles (27.06 km²) Of this, 98.1% is land and 0.199 sq miles (0.52km²) (or 1.9%) is water. Lombard is a member of the South Dakota DMA. The town has a population of 2,816. It is located in the state of South Dakota, and is part of the S.D.-D.C. border region. The city is home to the DMA's South Dakota State University. It also has the University of North Dakota's College of Medicine, which has a campus in Lombard. The village has a history dating back to the 18th century, when it was first settled. It was the site of the U.S. Civil War and the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1875 and 1876. The U.N. has a mission to Lombard, which is based in the town of Lombard and the town's surrounding area, to protect the area from future incursions. It has also served as the location of the D.A.R.E.S., which was founded in 1876, and the Daughters of the Confederacy, which was established in 1881. The current mayor is the son of a former mayor of the town, who was killed in a car accident.

The racial makeup of the village is 81.02% White, 8.70% African American, 0.15% Native American, 7.05% Asian, 1.43% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. The Hispanic or Latino population included 3,487 people (8.9%). The population of Lombard was 43,165 at the 2010 U.S. Census. The population density was 4,369.8 inhabitants per square mile (1,687.2/km²). There were 17,019 housing units at an average density of 1,757.2 per squaremile (678.5/km 2) The gender ratio was 48.2%. Among 17,544 occupied households, 72.5%. were owner-occupied and 27.5% were renter-occupied.

Transportation

Lombard is served by Metra's Union Pacific/West Line, which runs from the Ogilvie Transportation Center out to Elburn, Illinois over the old Chicago and Northwestern Railway trackage. Lombard's also served by I-88 / Illinois 110 and I-355 as well as Illinois Routes 38, 53, 56, and 64. Formerly, Lombard was served by trains of the Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (with commuter stops at Stewart Ave, Main St, Brewster Ave and Westmore/Meyers Road) and the Chicago Great Western Railway. These former railroads have been preserved as multiple use recreational trails (Illinois Prairie Path and Great Western Trail). Lombard is located on the Illinois River, a tributary of the Mississippi River, and the Illinois Turnpike, which connects to the Chicago River and Illinois River. The Chicago River runs through the center of Lombard, and it is crossed by the Chicago-Illinois Toll Road, which also runs through Lombard. The Illinois River is one of the most scenic rivers in the state, with views of the Great Lakes, the Chicago skyline, and Lake Michigan. The city is also home to the Illinois State Museum, which was built in the early 1900s to house the state's oldest public art collection, the Illinois Centennial Hall of Fame and Museum of Science and Industry. It is also the site of the Illinois National Guard, which dates back to the early 20th century.
