Rigby was founded by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1884. The community was named after William F. Rigby, a prominent early settler and member of the church. The population was 3,945 at the 2010 census, up from 2,998 in 2000. The city is at an elevation of 4,856 feet (1,480 m) above sea level. Jefferson County surrounding Rigby is the largest cottonwood forest west of the Mississippi River. Many tributaries of the Snake River run through the Rigby area including the Henrys Fork, South Fork, and others. In the city, the median age is 27.6 years, and the city has a total area of 2.36 square miles (6.11 km²), of which, 2.35 square miles of land is land and 0.01 sq miles (0.03 km²) is water. The racial makeup of the city was 91.16% White, 0.43% African American, 0,87% Native American,0.40% Asian, 5.64% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.67% of the population. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.43. It is located in Jefferson County, which is home to the University of Idaho, Idaho State University, and Idaho State College.

History

Rigby was founded by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1884 and incorporated in 1903. The community was named after William F. Rigby, a prominent early settler and member of the church. A significant majority of Rigby's residents, as well as those of the outlying communities, are members of The Church. Baptist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran faiths also have current local congregations. The town is home to the Rigby High School, which was founded in 1883. The school is one of the oldest in the state, having been established in 1881. It was the first high school in Rigby to graduate from high school. It is also the only high school to graduate with a degree from the University of Wyoming. The Rigby School District was established in 1903 and has been in existence ever since. It has been the site of several high schools, including Rigby Junior High, Rigby Senior High, and Rigby Middle School. It also has a high school, which opened in 1894. The high school was the birthplace of the first Rigby Elementary School, and is located in the center of the town. The district has been home to Rigby since 1884, and was the location of the Rigbys High School from 1884 to 1903. It currently has a junior high, high, and high school that were all founded in the early 1900s. There are also outlying community communities, some of which are still in operation. The city has a post office, postmaster, and postmaster.

Rigby High School is the primary high school within the city, serving grades 912. Jefferson High School exists as an alternative high school for high-need students. Rigby Middle School and Philo T. Farnsworth Middle School serve grades 68. The community supports six elementary schools: Cottonwood Elementary, Midway Elementary, South Fork Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Roberts Elementary, and Harwood Elementary. There is also the Rigby Virtual Academy serving K8 and the Early Childhood Center serving special needs aged 35. These schools also serve residents from neighboring areas such as Menan, Lewisville, and Roberts. In 2019 Rigby won their first state title in football, defeating Coeur d'Alene 57-56 in double overtime. The two schools had previously played in week one of the same season, with CoeurDAlene winning. The school has a long-standing rivalry with Madison High School, which Rigby has won 10 state titles in Boys Basketball, and in 2019 won the state football title for the first time in the history of the school. The team colors are maroon and gold, and the mascot is the Trojans, which means "Trojans" in Spanish and "Trojan" in English. The high school is located in the town of Rigby, which has a population of around 2,000 people. The city is located on the U.S. Highway 50. It is located between the towns of Menan and Lewisville.
