Kapolei

Kapolei (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kpolej) is a planned community in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States. It is colloquially known as the "second city" of Oahu, in relation to Honolulu. As of the 2010 census, the Kapolei CDP had a population of 15,186 people. The community takes its name from a volcanic cone. In the Hawaiian language, puu means "hill" and Kapo lei means "beloved Kapo". According to legend, Kapo, Goddess of Fertility, was sister to Pele and Nmaka. The U.S. postal code for Kapole i is 96707. In 2002, 96707 had the second highest median income on the island of O Honolulu, at $62,303. In 2006, the area had more than 800 companies, agencies, and organizations making up approximately 25,000 jobs. Nearly one household in five has income exceeding $100,000, with a home ownership rate of 70%. A majority of Honolulu adults, adults out of work out of the city of Honolulu, live in Kapolesi. The area has a median income of $70,129, compared to the national average of $42,350. In January 2007, Oahu residents saw an increase of 0.5 percent to the general excise tax to help cover the costs of construction of a new elevated rail system connecting Honolulu to Downtown Honolulu. In December 2006, Honolulu City Council approved the Honolulu Rail Transit project, a fixed-guideway system connecting elevated rail systems.

Demographics

The U.S. population is growing at a rapid rate, according to a new study. It's the fastest-growing demographic group in the world. The population is expected to grow at a rate of 3.7% over the next decade. The U.N. estimates that the U.K. population will grow by 3.8% by 2050. The rate of growth will be the highest in the developed world, the study says. The world's population is set to grow by 2.5% by 2030, the report says. It is the fastest growing demographic group since the 1960s. The United States is the world's most populous country, with a population of 1.7 million. The country's population has grown by 3% since the U.,S. Census Bureau estimates that it will grow at the fastest rate in the next 10 years. The nation's population will reach 1.8 million by 2050, the United Nations estimates. The growth rate will be 3.6%. The world is set for a population growth rate of 2.6% by the end of the century, the World Bank says, and the rate of population growth is 3.4% by 2035. The global population will rise by 1.9% over that time, the agency predicts. The rise will be fueled by an aging population that has grown at a faster rate than any other in history. The number of people in the United States will reach 2.9 million by the year's end.

History

In 2002, Pacific Business News reported that 96707 had the second highest median income on the island of Oahu, at $62,303. Nearly one household in five has income exceeding $100,000, with a home ownership rate of 70%. The original development objectives were to include: an employment center, a new center for offices and businesses, a center for government offices, a city of people walking, biking, or bussing, and the latest energy-efficient technologies such as water conservation and recycling. In essence a "smart city". The design plan for development ensures that the 7 themes of Kapole i remain the same throughout its construction. These include 1. Hawaiian Garden City 2. Healthy Living 3. Complete Community Services 4. Pedestrian-friendly 5. Past/Present/Future design architecture 6. Sustainability 7. Technology. The original master plan was drafted and revised 3 different times beginning in 1974. In 1977 the new General Provision Plan adopted the Oahu General Plan. In 1986 the Ewa Master Plan was revised to include the SUC and the initial residential construction began in the late 1980s with commercial developments springing up shortly thereafter. Nearly two decades later, in 2006 the Kapoloi area had more than 800 companies, agencies, and organizations making up approximately 25,000 jobs.

Communities

Other communities in the Kapolei area are the census-designated places of Makakilo and Naval Air Station Barbers Point (now known as Kalaeloa) The industrial area known as Campbell Industrial Park with the state's second largest deepwater port, Barber's Point Harbor. The resort and marina community of Ko Olina, which includes the Disney Aulani Resort andKo Olina Golf Club. The area is also home to the Kaua'i High School, which is one of Hawaii's most prestigious high schools. The school is located on the island of Oahu, in the north of the island's largest island, Maui. It is the only high school in the area, and the only one in the state with more than 1,000 students. It was founded in 1883 and is the oldest high school on Oahu. It has been the site of the Hawaii High School for more than 50 years. It also hosts the University of Hawaii at O'ahu, which has one of the highest graduation rates in the country. The town is home to a number of tourist attractions, such as the Maui Opera House and the O'Hare International Airport, which was built in the early 1900s. The city also has its own airport, which opened in the 1930s and was the first in Hawaii to be fully equipped with runways and taxi services. The airport is located near the base of the Haleiwa volcano, which lies on the east coast of the Big Island.

Transportation

Kapolei is located at the southern end of the slopes of the Waianae mountain near the neighborhood of Makakilo. It is located on the Ewa Plain approximately 25 miles (40 km) from Honolulu. A majority of Kapolei adults work in Honolulu, congesting the main traffic artery, Interstate H-1. In December 2006, the Honolulu City Council approved the Honolulu Rail Transit project, a fixed-guideway elevated rail system. The first phase of the project is expected to start service to Aloha Stadium in 2022. In January 2007, Oahu residents saw an increase of 0.5 percent to the general excise tax to help cover the costs of construction of the system. A Manawai Street-Kamaaha Avenue extension was completed in August 2006 and helped to reduce congestion along Kamokila Boulevard and Farrington Highway. In April 2012, work on the foundations for the concrete pillars began in Waipahu; work to install the pillars started in East Kapolesi in April 2012. To the south, Renton Road connects Kapole i to Kalaeloa and, further east, to Ewa Villages. Traveling eastward on Farrington highway connects to Honouliuli. The freeway ends about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Kapoloi, merging into State Route 93 (State Route 93) to Kahe and then to Nnkuli. Less than 1 mile beyond (west of) the merge of H- 1 andfarrington Highway is an off-ramp and overcrossing to the West Oahu resort area of Ko Olina.

Economy

Ka Makana Alii, a mall that opened in October 2016, has 1.4 million square feet of retail space and more than a hundred stores. Macy's Department Store is an anchor for the mall. The mall is located on the island of Kaua'i in the Hawaiian island of Mauna Kea in the North Hawaiian Islands.

Government and infrastructure

Kapolei is governed by the government of Honolulu County. The county government covers the entire island of Oahu, with the county seat being at Honolulu Hale in Honolulu. The Honolulu Police Department operates the Kapolei Regional Police Station for district 8 at 1100 Kamokila Boulevard. In 2010 the Hawaii State Judiciary Court relocated family court matters from cramped offices in downtown Honolulu to a newly constructed, technologically advanced building in Kapolesi. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Honolulu field office is in Kapole i at 91-1300 Enterprise Street. Opened in 2013, it is the first federal agency to be headquartered in Kapoloi. It has jurisdiction over Hawaii, Guam, Saipan, and American Samoa with resident agencies in Maui, Kona, Guam, and Saipans. The previous site in downtownolulu was too small. The City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation is located downtown Honolulu at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center. It is the headquarters for the city's Department of parks and recreation. The city's main municipal building is at 650 South King Street. It was built in 2001 and contains an office for the Mayor, as well as offices of various city and county government agencies. It also serves as the civic center and main municipalBuilding of the City of Kapoleo. The Kapolee City Council is made up of the mayor, city council members, and state representatives. The mayor is also a member of the Honolulu County Council.

Education

The Hawaii Department of Education operates public schools in Hawaii, including Kapolei. Public elementary schools in the Kapolesi CDP include KapoleI Elementary School and Hookele Elementary School. American Renaissance Academy (pre-K through 12) opened as a private school in 2007 in Kalaeloa, Naval Air Station Barbers Point. The University of HawaiiWest Oahu relocated to Kapole i in August 2012 and opened its new campus in August 2013. Hawaii Tokai International College relocated to Kapolei in April 2015. Wayland Baptist University is also located in Kapole  and opened its campus in June 2013. The Hawaii State University of Oahu has a campus in the CDP, which opened in 2010. The State of Hawaii offers a variety of public and private schools. The CDP also has a number of private schools, including Island Pacific Academy, which is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school offering IB classes to all grades. It also has two public middle schools and one public high school, with one middle school and one high school in the same CDP. It is also home to two public elementary schools, Makakilo Elementary and Mauka Lani Elementary, both of which are in the Makakilo CDP but have Kapoleo addresses. The district also has one public middle school, Kapolee Middle School, and one private school, Island Pacific School, which was founded in 2004. It has a public elementary school and a high school.
