Norcross is a city in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 9,116, while in 2020 the population was 17,209. It is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta metropolitan statistical area. The community was named for Jonathan Norcross, a former Atlanta Mayor and railroad official. In September 2015, the Norcross City Council approved plans to do a concept study on developing the Beaver Ruin Creek Greenway. The greenway could serve to connect Norcross residents to the Peachtree Creek greenway that is being developed in Atlanta, Brookhaven, Chamblee and Doraville. The city of Norcross is located at 33°56N 84°13W (33.9386, -84.2086) and has a total area of 4.65 square miles (12.05 km²) The city is bordered to the north by the city of Peachtrees Corners, and to the south by Interstate 85. In the 2000 census, there were 8,410 people, 2,644 households and 1,768 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 53.50% White, 20.82% African American, 6.10% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 15.39% from other races, and 3.63% from two or more races. The average household size was 3.04 and the average family income was $42,893.

History

Norcross is the primary city name, but also Berkeley Lake, Peachtree Cor, Peachtree Corners are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Norcross, Georgia. Norcross was chartered as a town on October 26, 1870. The community was named for Jonathan Norcross, a former Atlanta Mayor and railroad official. Norcross is located at the junction of the Georgia and Georgia railroads. The town is located on the Georgia Interior and the Georgia Interstate 75. It is located near the Georgia-Georgia Ripley's Paddington line, which runs through Norcross. The Norcross River runs through the center of the town. It was once known as the "Norcross River" and was once part of the Atlanta railway line. It has a population of about 1,000 and was named after Jonathan Nor Cross, who was a former mayor of Atlanta, Georgia, and a former railroad official and mayor of the city of Atlanta.

Geography

Norcross is located in western Gwinnett County at 33°56N 84°13W (33.9386, -84.2086). It is bordered to the north by the city of Peachtree Corners. Interstate 85 forms the southern boundary of the city, with access from Exits 99 (Jimmy Carter Boulevard), 101 (Indian Trail Lilburn Road), and 102 (Georgia State Route 378) Downtown Atlanta is 20 miles (32 km) to the southwest via I-85. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.65 square miles (12.05 km²) of which 4.64 square miles of it is land and 0.03 km², or 0.25%, is water. The city of Norcross has a population of 2,816. It is located at 33.938 miles (84.1986 km) west of Atlanta, Georgia, and is located on the Georgia Turnpike, which runs through Norcross. It has an elevation of 33.839 miles (85.838 km) and is in the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norcross is home to the Norcross High School, which was founded in 1881. It was the first high school in the state of Georgia to open in 1883. The Norcross School District was established in 1885. The school district has a history of being one of the oldest in Georgia. It opened in 1887.

Transportation

The Western Gwinnett Bikeway, is a multi-use trail along the Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. It is a shared use path, cycle track, and bike lane that connects Norcross to neighboring Duluth. In September 2015, the Norcross City Council approved plans to do a concept study on developing the Beaver Ruin Creek Greenway. The greenway could serve to connect Norcross residents to the Peachtree Creek Greenway that is being developed in Atlanta, Brookhaven, Chamblee and Doraville. The Norcross Greyhound Bus Terminal, 2105 Norcross Pkwy, Norcross, GA 30071 is home to the city's Greyhound bus terminal. The city also has its own public transit system called Norcross County Transit, which serves the city and surrounding areas of Atlanta and Cobb County. The bus terminal is also home to Atlanta's airport, which is a major hub for international travel. The transit system has a network of buses that serve the city, Cobb County, and Atlanta-Doraville-Chamblee, as well as the city of Norcross. It also has a commuter rail system that connects the city to the airport and the rest of the state of Georgia. It's also possible to ride the bus to and from the airport in Atlanta by taking a bus from the downtown Atlanta area to the Atlanta International Airport in the morning and back again in the afternoons. In the evening, the city has a light-rail system that runs from downtown Atlanta to the downtown area.

The racial and ethnic composition of the population was 40.8% white, 19. 8% black or African American, 0.7% Native American, 2.1% Asian Indian, 10.7%. The median household income was $44,728 and the median family Income was $42,893. The per capita income for the city was $18,573. The median age was 30 years. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 40.93% of the town's population. The average household size was 3.04 and the average family size was3.35. The city has a population of 9,116, with a population density of 2,050.4 inhabitants per squaremile (791.7/ km²).

Marshall, in Norcross in March 2020 during the COVID-19 epidemic. The 2018 film Love, Simon has a carnival themed scene filmed inThe Norcross town square. The town square was used for the filming of the film, which was based on the book, "Love, Simon" by Simon Cowell. The film was shot on location in the Norcross area and was released in the UK in September. The Norcross community is known for its love of the carnival, with many people attending the annual carnival in the area. The city is also known for being a popular destination for tourists, with a number of cruise ships and other tourist attractions based in the region.
