Grayson is a city in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. The 2020 estimated population of Grayson, GA is 4740 people. The population was 2,666 at the 2010 census, up from 765 in 2000. Grayson suffered a damaging tornado on June 27, 1994, killing a 10-year-old girl. The city has a total area of 2.53 square miles (6.55 km²) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Grayson has a population of 4,730 people (as of the 2020 census) The current mayor and council members are Bob Foreman, Allison Wilkerson, Gene Ussery, James Gillespie, and Linda Jenkins. Grayson Day, held annually on a Saturday at the end of April, is a parade down Main Street, with food, crafts, live music and local businesses. The first Grayson Day was called Trip Trip in 1901, and was held in the centrally located City Park, which takes place in the city's downtown area. The current city government consists of a mayor, four council members, and four members of the Snellville Days Festival, which is held annually in nearby Snellvillle. The mayor of Grayson is Bob foreman, and the city council consists of four members, including Bob Foremen, Bob Ussary, James G. Gillespie, Linda Jenkins, and Allison Wilkserson. Grayson is located at 33°5336N 83°5720W (33.893306, -83.955420). Georgia State Route 20 is the main highway through town.

Geography

Grayson is located southeast of the center of Gwinnett County at 33°5336N 83°5720W (33.893306, -83.955420) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.53 square miles (6.55 km²), of which 2.47square miles (6.40 km²) is land and 0.06 square miles of land, or 2.30%, is water. Georgia State Route 20 is the main highway through town, leading north 5 miles (8 km) into Lawrenceville, the county seat, and southeast five miles to Loganville. The city suffered a damaging tornado on June 27, 1994, killing a 10-year-old girl. In the late 1990s and through the 2000s, Grayson has been benefitting from exurban growth in eastern Gwinnet County, especially in the late 90s and early 2000s. It has a population of 1,856. The town is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, a tributary of the Suwanee River, which runs through the city. It is located in the eastern part of the county, near the junction of Georgia State Routes 20, 84, and 84W, and the Georgia Turnpike, which leads southwest to Snellville, Loganville, and north to Lawrenceville. There are no airports in the city, but there is an airport on the nearby city of Lawrenceville that serves as a hub for air traffic.

Demographics

As of the 2010 U.S. census, Grayson had a population of 2,666. The racial and ethnic composition of the population was 62.8% white, 23.8%, black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 9.0% Asian, and 4% from other races. As of the 2020 United States census, there were 4,730 people, 1,245 households, and 1,049 families residing in the city. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.02. The city's median income was $51,750, and the median income for a family was $61,618. The per capita income for the city was $22,695. About 6.3% of families and 8.2% of the city's population were below the poverty line, including 5. 2% of those under age 18 and 13.6% ofThose age 65 or over. The median age in Grayson was 35 years. For every 100 females, there are 99.7 males. For each 100 females age 18 or over, there is 91.8 males. The population density was 435.8 inhabitants per square mile (168.3/km²). Arts and culture

Grayson Day Festival, held annually on a Saturday at the end of April, features a parade down Main Street, food vendors, crafts, and live music. The city and local businesses sponsor the event, which takes place mostly in the centrally located Grayson City Park. The football team, marching band, and cheerleaders from Grayson High School, as well as other local organizations, politicians, and groups make the parade a favorite tradition among residents. The event is modeled after Snellville Days in nearbySnellville, which is also held in April. The festival is free and open to the public, but donations can be made at www.graysondayfestival.org.

History

The city of Grayson was first called Trip. On December 6, 1901, the General Assembly of Georgia approved an act to incorporate the town and change the name. The name Grayson was suggested by John Ellery Jacobs, the postmaster and civic leader. He then suggested Graymount (because there was a clear view of Stone Mountain), but it was also taken. It was then suggested the name of Grayson, Georgia. The city was incorporated in 1901 and the name was changed to Grayson on December 7, 1901. The town has a population of about 2,000. It is located on the Georgia Turnpike, which was built in 1859. The turnpike was built on the site of a former cotton gin, which opened in 1858. The original name of the town was Trip, Georgia, but was changed in 1901 to Berkley, Georgia because there was already a Berkley in the area. The current name Grayson is the current name for the city, which is located in Grayson County, Georgia and was incorporated on December 8, 1901 and was named after the town's first postmaster, John E. Jacobs, who was also a civic leader and postmaster at the time. It has been called Grayson since 1901 and is now a suburb of Atlanta. It also has a post office and a city park, which were built in the early 20th century. Grayson was featured in Outbreak, authored by Robin Cook, which was published in 1987. The 2020 movie called The Stalker was shot in Grayson and set in 2020. Grayson was also featured in the TV series "The X-Files" and the movie "X-Men: The Last Stand" Grayson was the setting for the film "The Stalker" which was shot on location in Grayson. Grayson is also the setting of the TV show "The X-Files", which was filmed in Grayson in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was also the inspiration for "The Walking Dead" series of the same name, which first aired in 2004. Grayson has been featured in numerous other films, including "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings", as well as other TV shows and TV shows, such as "The Simpsons" and  "South Park" The town has also been used in the "Harry Potter" series, and in "The Hunger Games" series. The town is featured in a number of other books and movies, including one by author Robin Cook called "Outbreak", which is based on the book "Grayson" and is published by Simon & Schuster. It has also appeared in several other films and TV series, including the "Star Wars" series and the "Indiana Jones" series "Jurassic Park" series."Grayson's" name is derived from the town of Grayson, Indiana, which is located in the U.S. state of Indiana.
