Marietta

Marietta is a city in and the county seat of Cobb County, Georgia, United States. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 60,972. The 2019 estimate was 60,867, making it one of Atlanta's largest suburbs. It is believed that the city was named for Mary Cobb, the wife of the U.S. Senator and Superior Court judge Thomas Willis Cobb. The county is named for Cobb. In 1892, Marietta established a public school system for white students. It did not provide a high school for black students until 1924 when Booker T. Washington High School opened in Atlanta. The city was selected as the hub for the new Western and Atlantic Railroad and business boomed. During the 1850s, fire destroyed much of the city on three separate occasions. General William Tecumseh Sherman invaded the town during the Atlanta Campaign in summer 1864. In November 1864, General Hugh Kilpatrick set the town ablaze, the first strike in Sherman's March to the Sea. In August 1915, Frank Frank, a Jewish-American superintendent of the National Pencil Company in Atlanta, had been convicted of the murder of Mary-Leo Phagan, 13-year-old worker of the factory. He was lynched at 1200 Roswell Road on August 17, 1915, just east of MarietTA. The town is located in the Sope Cemetery, with the graves of over 3,000 Confederate soldiers killed during the Battle of Atlanta.

History

Marietta was named for Mary Cobb, the wife of the U.S. Senator and Superior Court judge Thomas Willis Cobb. Early settlers built homes near the Cherokee town of Big Shanty (now Kennesaw) before 1824. The Georgia General Assembly legally recognized the community on December 19, 1834. The city was initially selected as the hub for the new Western and Atlantic Railroad and business boomed. During the 1850s, fire destroyed much of the city on three separate occasions. In 1892, the city established a public school system. It included a Marietta High School for white students. The state of Georgia did not provide a high school for black students until 1924 when T. Washington Washington (Georgia) High School opened in Atlanta. Leo Frank, a Jewish superintendent of the National-American Pencil Company in Atlanta, was lynched at Roswell Road on August 17, 1915, because of problems with his death sentence. He had been convicted of the murder of one of his factory workers, 13-year-old Mary Phagan, and was portrayed as sexually depraved and captured the public's attention in sensational press coverage. The town is home to the Georgia Military Institute, which was built in 1851 and the first bank opened in 1855. It is also the site of the famous Great Locomotive Chase, in which James Andrews and his men tried to hijack a train and destroy the railroad on their way to Chattanooga, Georgia. In November 1864, General Hugh Kilpatrick set the town ablaze, the first strike in Sherman's March to the Sea.

Geography

Marietta is located in Cobb County, Georgia, between Kennesaw and Smyrna. U.S. Route 41 and State Route 3 run through the city. Marietta has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa). It falls under the USDA 7b Plant Hardiness zone. The city has a total area of 23.2 square miles (60.0 km²), of which 23.1 square miles is land and 0.077 square mile (0.38 km²) is water. It has a population of 2,816. It is located near the center of the Cobb County area, between the towns of Kennesawsville and Smyrna, and between the cities of Cartersville and Atlanta. It also has access to Interstate 75 through the eastern part of the city, with exits 261, 263, 265, and 267. The nearest major city is Atlanta, which is 20 miles (32 km) to the southeast. The closest major city to the city is Cartersville, about 24 miles (39 km) away. The town's population is 2,715. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I, and is now known as the "Battle of Atlanta" The city is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, which runs through the east end of Cobb County. It's also near the town of Sandy Springs, which lies to the west.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 60,972 people, 24,554 households, and 13,788 families residing in the city. The racial make-up was 52.7% White, 31.5% African American, 3.0% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 9.1%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.6% of the population. The average household size was 2.39, and the average family size was 3.05. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over,there were 100.3 males. The city has a population of 56,641 people and 22,261 households. The population density was 2,684.1 per square mile (1,036.3/km²). There were 25,227 housing units at an average density of 1,152.6 per squaremile (445.0/ km²). The city is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the city's downtown area. The Ohio River is a tributary of the Mississippi River. The river flows through the center of the city and into the Ohio Valley. It is also known as the "Ohio River Valley" because it runs through many of the town's downtown areas. The town's name is derived from the river's name, which means "Ohio river" or "Ohio valley". The city's name also comes from the state of Ohio, which was once known as "Ohio".

Government

The city of Marietta is organized under a form of government consisting of a Mayor, City Council, and City Manager. The City Council is made up of representatives elected from each of seven single-member districts within the city. Dobbins Air Reserve Base and a Lockheed Martin manufacturing plant are among the major industries in the city. The top employers within the city were: Lockheed Georgia Employees Credit Union and Dobbinson's Air Force Base, according to the city's 2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The city is home to the U.S. Air Force National Guard and the Georgia Air National Guard Auxiliary, which is based in the south side of town. It is also home to Georgia State University and the University of Georgia, which are based on the north side of the city, and the College of Arts and Sciences, which was founded in 1883. The U.N. World Economic Forum has a branch in Marieta. It has a mission to promote peace and stability in the world. It also has a goal to promote economic growth and prosperity for all its citizens. State routes 3, 5, and 120 also run through the eastern part of the city. U.S. 41 runs through the city, as does Interstate 75. The city is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, a tributary of the Little River, which flows into the Chattooga River. The Chattoochee and Little River Rivers, which flow into the Little river, are the city's main water supply. The Little River and Little Rivers are also the source of the Cobb County Water System, which provides water to the city and surrounding areas of Cobb County. The Cobb County Sewer and Water System provides water and sewer service to the City and its surrounding areas. The City's water supply is owned and operated by Cobb County Power & Water, which is based in Cobb County, Georgia. It is also owned by the City of Cobb, which has its own power and water distribution system. The town has a population of about 2,000 people, about one-third of whom live in the eastern half of the community. The majority of residents live in or near the town center.

Education

Marietta is home to the Marietta City Schools. The school system employs 1,200 people. It is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School district. Kennesaw State University, formerly known as Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU), and Life University are located in the town. The Walker School is a private pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade school. It competes in the Georgia High School Association Class A (Region 6) athletic division while Marietna and Wheeler compete in Class AAAAAA (Regions 4 and 5, respectively). It is also home to A.L. Burruss, Dunleith, Hickory Hills, Lockheed, MarietTA Center for Advanced Academics, Park Street, Sawyer Road, and West Side. MCS is one of only a few school systems nationwide able to provide the full IB (K-12) continuum. In 2008, MCS became only the second IB World School school district in Georgia authorized to offer the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) for grades 6-10. MCS serves more than 20,000 students in more than 90 programs of study. The town is the home of the Georgia State Museum, which is located on the outskirts of the city. The city is also the site of the National Museum of Natural History, which was founded in 1881 and is located in downtown Atlanta. The museum is on the grounds of the former Georgia State University.

Culture

The city has six historic districts, some on the National Register of Historic Places. Downtown is the town square and former location of the county courthouse. The Marietta Gone with the Wind Museum houses a collection of memorabilia related to the book and the film. The 2014 film Dumb and Dumber To filmed a scene in the city. The city's Strand Theatre has been renovated back to its original design and features live theatre, concerts, classic films, and other events. The Kennesaw House is one of only four buildings in Marietna not burned to the ground in Sherman's March to the Sea. The Big Chicken is a landmark on U.S. 41 and is home to the Cobb County Museum of Art. The 1995 Disney film Gordy was filmed in the town and was shot on location in the Mariettta Square. The town is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, which runs through the center of the city and into Cobb County. The Cobb County Zoo is located in the downtown area and is the home of the Cobb Museum of History and Art, which exhibits the history of Cobb County and the city of Mariette. It is also the site of the annual Cobb County Farmers' Market, which takes place on the last Sunday of each month. The county's largest employer is Cobb County, which has a population of about 6,000. The state's largest private employer is Mariettas, with a total population of more than 4,000, including about 2,000 businesses.
