Polk City is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,562 at the 2010 census. As of 2018, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 2,422. It is part of the LakelandWinter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. Polk City is located within the Central Florida Highlands area of the Atlantic coastal plain with a terrain consisting of flatland interspersed with gently rolling hills. The city is named after the county, itself named after James Knox Polk, the eleventh president of the United States, and the city was incorporated as a Town in 1925. The town is governed by a five-person council that elects a mayor and vice mayor from its membership. It has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²) and is located in the humid subtropical zone (Köppen climate classification: Cfa) The city has a public library that is a member of the Polk County Library Cooperative. It provides free computer use and interlibrary loan services. The library is located at 215 S. Bougainvillea Avenue. For children there is Tee-Ball and Pee-Wee football league as well as a football league. The mayor of Polk City also serves as a mayor of Little Little Little City as a Little League coach. It also has a community center that offers free computers and other services to the public. It was named after Polk County's 11th president.

History

Polk City was incorporated as a Town in 1925, and changed by ordinance to the City of Polk City in 2005. The city was named after the county, itself named after James Knox Polk, the eleventh president of the United States. Polk City is located on the banks of the Ohio River, which flows through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to be named after a U.S. president. It has a population of about 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the town. It was founded in 1925 and was named for the county's first president, Polk, who was assassinated in 1841. The town's name was changed to Polk City by ordinance in 2005, and it is now a city. Its population is about 1,000. It's located on a river that runs through the city, which is also named for Polk, and is known as the "Polk River" The city's name is also the name of Polk County, which was founded by Polk in 1842. The county is named after Polk and his son, James Knox, the Eleventh President of the U. S., who was killed in 1843. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,516 people, 542 households, and 422 families residing in the town. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there are 97.4 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there is 95.6 males. The city's median income was $32,083, and the median income for a family was $36,705. The per capita income for the town is $14,108. About 13.6%. of families and 13.4%. of the residents were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under 18 and 5.7%. of those age 65 or over.

Arts and culture

Fantasy of Flight, an aviation-related attraction, takes visitors back to the pioneering days of early flight. The museum closed in April 2014 but is planned to reopen later in a downscaled form.Polk City Community Library is a public library that is a member of the Polk County Library Cooperative. It provides free computer use and interlibrary loan services. The library is located at 215 S. Bougainvillea Avenue. There is a yearly Founder's Day festival in midtown park located at the beginning of General James A. Van Fleet State Trail. The festival is free and open to the public. It takes place on the last day of each month in the month of February. It is held at the end of the first week of February and lasts until the second week of the month in March. There are no plans for the festival to resume in the next few months. It will be held on the same day as the annual Founder’s Day festival, which takes place every year on the third Saturday in February. The event is free to attend and is held in the same place as the Founder”s Day Festival, which is held the last Saturday of the third month of each year. It also takes place the following week on the fourth Saturday in March, and the fifth Saturday in April.

Sports

Polk City offers a vast array of activities throughout the year. For children there is Tee-Ball and Little League as well as a Pee-Wee football league. SR 10 is a popular road leading into Lakeland; it leads northward to Groveland, and then southward into Lake County. SR 11 is a minor road leading out of Lakeland that leads into the city, leading into the town of Auburrdale, which is in the north. SR 12 is a secondary road that leads south and east, leading north and west, leading out to the city of Tampa and south toward the Florida turnpike, which lies in the south.
