Winter Park

Winter Park is a city in Orange County, Florida, United States. It was founded as a resort community by northern business magnates in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its main street, called Park Avenue, is located in the middle of town. It includes civic buildings, retail, art galleries, a private liberal arts college (Rollins College), museums, a park, a train station, a golf course country club, a historic cemetery, and a beach and boat launch. It is the second most expensive college in the state with a tuition of $64,972 per year. The school's business school is the Crummer School of Business where students can earn a MBA, is a premier Business School, and is the number one business school in Florida. The first human residents were migrant Muscogee people who had earlier intermingled with the Choctaw and other indigenous people. The site was first inhabited by Europeans in 1858, when David Mizell Jr. bought an 8-acre (32,000 m2) homestead between Lakes Virginia, Mizell, and Berry. In 1885, a group of businessmen started the Winter Park Company and incorporated it with the Florida Legislature; Chase and Chapman sold the town to the new company. The town was then promoted heavily, especially to snow birds in the north looking for a place to hibernate in the winter. Back in 1886, the Seminole Hotel on Lake Osceola opened. This was a resort complete with the luxuries of the day: gas lights, steam heating, string orchestra, a bowling alley, and long covered porches.

History

Winter Park is the primary city name, but also Aloma are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Winter Park. Winter Park was first inhabited by Europeans in 1858, when David Mizell Jr. bought an 8-acre homestead between Lakes Virginia, Mizell, and Berry. In 1885, the Congregational Assembly of Florida started Rollins College, the state's first four-year college. In a land bubble characteristic of Florida history, land prices soared from less than $2 per acre to over $200, with at least one sale recorded at $300 per acre. President Grover Cleveland visited the area and was given a huge reception at the Seminole Hotel on February 23, 1888. He enjoyed the Bounding Horse Cart ride and stated that it was the most pleasant diversion of his Florida trip. The next president to visit the area was Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. President Barack Obama visited Winter Park on August 2, 2012, to give a speech that was part of his re-election campaign. Winter Park is a large mix of both conservative and liberal constituents, this is evident in Congressional District 7's last two representatives. Both had a lot of support from both sides of the aisle and both lost reelection to Democrat Stephanie Murphy and Republican John Mica in 2016. The county Winter Park was in was the one of the bluest counties in Florida, and Winter Park, in Orange County, is the most Republican county in the state. Geography

The city is northeast of and adjacent to Orlando. Elevation ranges between 66 and 97 feet (20 and 30 m) above sea level. The city is traversed by the old East Florida and Atlantic Railroad ("Dinky Line") railroad bed, which until the 1960s had a stop at Lake Virginia/Rollins College at the city park now known as Dinky Dock. SunRail operates a rail line through Winter Park on the former Atlantic Coast Line, with an Amtrak and SunRail commuter rail station in downtown's historic Central Park. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 square miles (26.3 km²), of which 8.7 square mile (22.5 km²) is land and 1.5 squaremile (3.9km²) (14.62%) is water. It is nestled among the Winter Park Chain of Lakes, a series of lakes interconnected by aseries of navigable canals, which were originally created for flood control and to run logs to a sawmill on present-day Lake Virginia. The lakes are popular for boating, watersports, fishing and swimming. Much of this right of way has been converted to a rail-trail pedestrian/biking path in the form of the Cady Way Trail, which leads from Cady way Park toward the Baldwin Park neighborhood and downtown Orlando, and in the opposite direction to Oviedo and beyond (via the Florida Trail), due to a new pedestrian bridge spanning Semoran Boulevard.

Demographics

As of the census of 2020, there were 29,131 people, 13,072 households, and 7,055 families residing in the city. There were 14,073 housing units at an average density of 1,606.5 per square mile (620.3/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 84.6% White, 4.7% African American, 0.22% Native American, 4,8% Asian, 1.5% from other races, and 4.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.0% of the population. In the city the population was spread out, with 3.5%. under the age of 5, 17.3% under 18, 82.7%. aged 18 years and over, and 22.3%. who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45.3 years. According to justicemap.org, the area of Winter Park to the east of Park ave is 99.2% white. Directly west of Park Ave, these numbers completely flip and the area is around 80% Black. Close to Interstate 4, the main highway of the area, the population is also more Black than the surrounding areas. As of July 1, 2021 the estimated population is29,131. The population density was 3,401.6 inhabitants per squaremile (1,283.97/km 2). There were 13,72 households out of which 22.8% had children under the Age of 18 living with them.

Economy

The median income for a household in the city was $80,500. The average household income in Winter Park is $44,000. About 7.0% of families and 9.9% of the population were below the poverty line. The city is often seen as a popular tourist destination for those visiting Orlando that want an escape from the typical tourist scene of the Orlando theme parks. There is a quaint, local feel to the town even though there are a lot of tourists, especially during the winter months and holidays.Within the city is the Mead Botanical Garden which is a 47.6 acres (19.3 ha) park that encompasses several ecosystems. It has an amphitheater, butterfly garden, discovery barn and a recreation center. Many structures are more than 100 years old. D100 Radio was founded here and is still present inWinter Park. The top employers in the City are: Bonnier Corporation, D100 radio, and the City's 2021 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, according to the city's 2021 comprehensive annual financial report, the top employers are: The City of Winter Park, the City of Orlando, and Winter Park Economic Development Corporation. The median household income is $130,120 and the per capita income is $65,481. The highest income area is to the west of Park Ave with an average household Income of $23,000 and the lowest income is the gentrified area to the east of Park Avenue with a household income of $32,000, but many of these are lakefront properties.

Educational institutions

The Geneva School, Lake Howell High School, Trinity Preparatory School and Winter Park High School are among the schools in the Winter Park area. The Parke House Academy is a private boarding school. The Winter Park Campus of Valencia College is located in Winter Park. Winter Park Tech is a privately owned tech college. The school's name is Winter Park Technology, which was founded in the 1990s. It is part of the University of Central Florida. It has a campus in Lake Howell, a satellite campus in Orlando, and a satellite Campus in Lakeland. It also has a satellite campuses in Orlando's Lakeland and Kissimmee, Florida, and the Orlando suburb of Lakeland, Florida. The college has a Winter Park campus, which opened in 2010. The campus also has an on-campus technology center. It was founded by Valencia College in the early 2000s. The university's Winter Park campuses are located in the Lake Howell and Lakeland areas of the Orlando area, as well as the Lakeland campus of Winter Park City College. It opened in the mid-2000s, and has an off-campus campus in the city's Lakewood area. It's the first of its kind in the Orlando-area and is located at the center of the Winter Springs area of the city. The College's campus is in the town of Lake Howell. The town has a population of about 3,000. The high school has about 2,000 students. The middle school has around 1,500 students and the elementary school has 1,200 students.

Winter Park is home to the Winter Park Farmers' Market and Winter Park Public Library. The city is also home to a number of museums and historic buildings. Winter Park is also the site of the annual Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The Winter Park Farmer's Market is one of the city's most popular events.

Transportation

Winter Park station (SunRail/Amtrak) is a major transit hub in Orlando, Florida. The city has a number of major roads, including I-4, SR 423, SR 426, SR 527, and SR 423. Orlando is home to more than 1,000 public transit stations. It is also home to the world's largest public transit system, the Orlando-Orlando Light Rail. It also has one of the largest public bus systems in the country, with more than 2,000 passengers a day. It's the largest transit system in the U.S., overtaking New York City and Los Angeles as the No. 1 city in the United States in terms of passengers per day. The number of public transit stops in Orlando is the highest in the state, surpassing the number of cars in the city in 2010. The Orlando-Orange County line is the largest in the nation, overtaking the city's other major lines of transportation, such as the Florida Turnpike and the Dixie Highway. It has the highest ridership in Florida, with over 1,200,000 per day, more than any other city. The state has a population of more than 3,000,000 people, the majority of whom live in the Orlando area. In 2010, the city had the highest level of traffic in its history, with nearly 1,100,000 vehicles per day on the city’s major roads. It was the second-highest rate of traffic, behind only San Francisco in 1990.
