Tavares was founded in 1880 by Alexander St. Clair-Abrams, a newspaper and railroad man from a Creole family in New Orleans. In 1919, Tavares incorporated as a town. In 1949, the Groveland Four, were wrongly accused of raping a white woman in 1949. One was killed after fleeing, and three were convicted at trial in Tavares. In 2016, the city of Groveland and Lake County formally apologized to families of all the men for injustice. In 2017, the Florida Legislature issued a formal apology and exonerated the men, calling on the governor to officially pardon them. Tavares is 32 miles (51 km) northwest of Orlando and 43 miles (69 km) southeast of Ocala. It sits on an isthmus between Lake Eustis to the north and Lake Dora to the south. It is the county seat of Lake County. The name is a popular Portuguese surname and toponym. The population at the 2020 census was 19,003, and in 2019 the population was estimated to be 17,749. The city is part of the OrlandoKissimmeeSanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has a total area of 13.7 square miles (35.6 km²) of which 12.2 square miles are land and 1.6square miles (4.1 km²), or 11.62%, are water. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Tavares has a population of 17,000.

History

Tavares is the primary city name, but also Deer Island are acceptable city names or spellings. Tavares was founded in 1880 by Alexander St. Clair-Abrams, a newspaper and railroad man from a Creole family in New Orleans. The Groveland Four, were wrongly accused of raping a white woman in 1949. The Supreme Court of the United States overturned the verdict and ordered a new trial for the two capital defendants. In 2016, the city of Groveland and Lake County formally apologized to families of all the men for injustice. In 2017, the Florida Legislature issued a formal apology and exonerated the men, calling on the governor to officially pardon them. In 1919, Tavares incorporated as a town and was designated the county seat of Lake County. In 1887 it was designated as the state capital, but this was not realized until 1887. The city of Tavares is located in Lake County, Florida. It is located on Florida's panhandle, just south of the state's largest city, Orlando. The town has a population of about 4,000. It was named after a Portuguese ancestor, who lived in the area in the 19th century. It has a post office, a hotel, three stores, a sawmill, and eight cottages. It also has a railroad from Tavares to Orlando, which it chartered in 1883. In 1999, it was named the county home of the Lake County Sheriff's Office, which is based in the town of Lakeland. It is the only city in New Mexico that is not on the National Highway System, which runs from New Mexico to South Dakota. It was the site of the World War II-era Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In the city, 14.1% of people are under the age of 18, 5.8% between 18 and 24, 19.8%. between 25 and 44, 22.2%. between 45 and 64, and 38.0% over 64.

It has been running since 2007 and is the only public transportation service in Lake County. It was founded by the City of Tavares and the County of Lake County in the 1990s. The service is free and available to the public at no cost. It runs every day and is available in both directions on a fixed route and on a rotary route.
