Leesburg was first settled in 1857 by Evander McIver Lee. The city was incorporated in 1875, and was designated as the county seat of Sumter County for a time. Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist Randy Rhoads, as well as the band's cook and bus driver, were killed in a plane crash at Flying Baron Estates in 1982. In 1997, Leesburg Bikefest started. It has since become an annual spring tradition, with upwards of 250,000 people attending every year. In spring 2017, the Holding Company of the Villages planned to acquire 2,600 acres north and south of County Road 470 along the east side of Floridas Turnpike for future development. The initial plans call for building approximately 4,500 homes and some commercial development. LakeSumter State College and Beacon College are located in Leesberg. The population was 20,117 at the 2010 census. As of 2019, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau was 23,671. It is located 44.5 miles NNW of Orlando, 270 miles N of Miami, and 221 miles SW of Tallahassee, the state capital. The rapid growth of nearby Orlando has resulted in demand for housing here, as many people commute to Orlando for work. In the early 20th century, Leebsburg was an important center for watermelon production. The citrus industry was the principal business in this area for decades, but devastating freezes in December 1983 and February 1985 persuaded growers to move their groves further south.

Geography
Leesburg is located 44.5 miles NNW of Orlando, 270 miles N of Miami, and 221 miles SW of Tallahassee, the state capital. The city has a total area of 24.4 square miles (63 km²), of which 18.7 sq miles (48 km²) is land and 5.8sq miles (15km²) (23.65%) is water. Several major highways pass through Leesburg, including U.S. Highway 27, U.S. Highway 441 and S.R. 44. Leesburgh was on the western leg of the Dixie Highway. The town is located on the Florida Turnpike, which passes just to the south and west of Leesberg. The state capital is Tallah assee, which is 221 miles to the north. The county seat is Estero, and the city is on the Atlantic Coast. The population of the city was 2,788 in the 2010 United States Census. It has a population of 2,816. The area is mostly wooded, with a few patches of grassy land. It is located in the Florida Panhandle. The U.N. World Heritage Site is in the town, which was built in the early 1900s. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the 1930s and 1940s. The USGS says the city has an average annual rainfall of 1.2 inches (4.4 mm).

Arts and Culture
The Leesburg Public Library was founded in 1875. The Melon Patch Players is a nonprofit theater group founded in 1951. The Leesburg African American Museum contains African American artifacts. The library moved to a 42,000-square-foot (3,900 m2) building in 2007. It joined the Lake County Library System in 2002. The Leesberg Center for the Arts is a. nonprofit founded in 2000, to provide art education and exhibitions. It is located in the heart of the town, in the center of a historic district. It has a library, a museum, a theater and a center for the arts. It moved to the Venetian Gardens in 1953 when the library established a library charter, and in 2007, it moved to. a new building in the city. It was previously located in a different part of the city, in what is now the town's downtown area, in a building that was once the home of the American Museum of Natural History. The museum contains AfricanAmerican artifacts. It also has a theater, a gallery, an art gallery and an exhibition space. It opened its doors in 2000 and has been in the same building ever since. In 2007, the library moved into the new building. It now has a collection of more than 2,000 pieces of art, including works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Picasso and Picasso's "Laurentian" The museum also has an African American museum, which was opened in 2000.
Sports
Cooke Field was used by the Philadelphia Phillies for their spring training sessions from 1922 to 1924. In 1936, the city built the Ballpark at Venetian Gardens, used by several minor league baseball clubs that played in the Florida State League from 1937 to 1968. The city won league titles in 1941 and 1946. Since 2007, Leesburg has been the home of a wood-bat collegiate summer baseball team. Annie Oakley performed shooting exhibitions at Cooke Field in the 1920s, including one for the Philadelphia Phillpies and the St. Louis Cardinals. She also had a residence in the city in the 1930s and 1940s, when she was a sharpshooter for the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs. The Leesberg Lightning are a collegiate baseball team in the Florida Collegiate Summer League. They play their home games at the Ball Park at Venenian Gardens. The Lightning play in a division of the Florida Collegiates Summer League, where they have won two league titles. They also play in the National Collegiate Baseball League, which they have also won two titles in. The team plays its home games in a stadium that was once the site of a World War II-era naval base. They are currently playing in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays minor league division, which has a team that plays in the Gulf Coast League. Their home games are played at the Leesburg Ballpark, which was built in the 1950s and 1960s. The club's home field is the Leesburg Stadium, which opened in 1961.
Education
Lake County Schools operates public primary and secondary schools: Leesburg High School, Carver Middle School, Oak Park Middle School and Beverly Shores Elementary School. Private schools include First Academy-Leesburg, Saint Paul Catholic School and First Christian School. LakeSumter State College is a private college. Lake County Schools also operates a pre-school and an early learning center. The schools are located in the town of Leeesburg and in the towns of Leakesburg and Bebevly Shores.
Infrastructure
Leesburg International Airport is a small hub airport at the intersection of CR 44 and US 441, in front of Lake-Sumter State College. It is a hub of JetSky airlines, and serves Lake, Sumter, and Marion Counties. The airport was built in the 1950s and is one of the oldest airports in the state. It was named after Leesburg, South Carolina, where the airport was founded. It has a small airport hub, with a total of six runways. It also has a passenger terminal, which is used by JetSky and other low-cost carriers. It opened in 1961. It closed in the 1990s, when JetSky moved to a new hub in Tampa, Florida. It reopened in the 2000s, and is now a hub for JetSky again, with four runways and an additional passenger terminal. It serves three counties: Lake, Marion, and Sumter. It's also home to the University of South Carolina's College of Veterinary Medicine, which has an on-campus medical center and an off-campus emergency room. There are no direct flights to and from the airport, but the airport has a number of air-to-ground connections. It can be reached by car or by foot, and has a limited number of taxiways and a few parking spaces. It is located in the heart of Lake Sumter County, in the center of the town of Leeesburg, near the town's downtown area.
