Eustis is a city in Lake County, Florida, United States. The population was 23,189 at the 2020 census. It is part of the OrlandoKissimmeeSanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The City of Eustis holds a festival every year which begins on the last Friday of February and runs through Sunday and has been held since 1902. The city limits are defined by Eudora, Abrams, and CR 44 (bypass) on the east, CR44 to the north, US Hwy 441 to the south and Lake EUSTis and Florida Hospital Waterman to the west. It also serves as the center for many small communities of Rural East Lake County including Cassia and Pine Lakes, which are not reflected in the Census Bureau's city statistics but make up for the vast discrepancy in county to city statistics. When the rural statistics are compiled into the city stats, the total population of Eastis topped 50,000 in 2000. The first homes were those of those of David Clifford, A.D. Herrick, Henry Herrick and Henry Keyrick, who occupied the first store and later built the first building in the town. It was in the second floor of the General Store that the first churches were formed, Episcopal, Methodist and Presbyterian. In 1876 A.S. Pendry homesteaded and set out a citrus grove. The post office in the lobby of the Ocklawaha Hotel carried the sign Pendryville. The town was named for General Abraham Eust is, prominent in the Seminole Wars, near present-day Tavares, Florida.
Geography
Eustis is located at 28°5104N 81°4055W. The city limits are defined by Eudora, Abrams, and CR 44 (bypass) on the east, CR44 to the north, US Hwy 441 to the south and Lake Eustis and Florida Hospital Waterman to the west. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.6 square miles (25 km²) of which 8.4 square miles is land and 1.3square miles (3.4 km²), or 13.28% is water. It is located in the central part of the Florida Panhandle, near the state line with Florida and Jacksonville. The town has a population of 1,071. It was founded in the 19th century by a group of farmers who moved to the area after the Spanish-American War. In the early 20th century, the town was known as "Eusti" and was the site of the Eusti House, which was built in the 1930s. It has since been named after the town's founder, who was born in the area in the same year as the city. The current mayor of the city is Michael Eustein, who also served as mayor from 1961 to 1973. The mayor is a former mayor of Eusto, Florida, who served from 1973 to 1986. He was elected to a second term in 1998.

Education
Numerous educational institutions are zoned for Eustis. The town is home to several elementary and middle schools. The city is also home to Alee Academy, a private high school, and a middle and high school. It is located on the U.S. Turnpike, which runs through the town's center. It was built in the early 1900s and was named after the town of the same name. It has a population of about 2,000 people, mostly residents of the Eustes area of the Texas Panhandle. It also has a small percentage of residents who live outside the city limits of the town, in the nearby town of St. Mary's. The community is also known for its many historic buildings. The Eustas River runs through Eusti, which was named for the town. The river is a tributary of the St. John's River, which flows through the center of the city and is known as the "Eustis River" The town's name is derived from the name of the first town in the area, St. Mary's, which means "beautiful" or "peaceful" in Latin. The name of Euusti is also used to refer to an area in which the town was once called "St Mary's".
History
Eustis was named about 1825 for General Abraham Eustis, prominent in the Seminole Wars. In 1883 the "Lake" was dropped and the town became just Eusti. The Ocklawaha Hotel catered to the wealthy. The opera house, on the second floor, was a cultural center of EustIs and a wide swath of Central Florida. The town's first telegraph line connected Eust is, Leesburg, and Sanford in 1878. The first homes were those of D.W. Herrick, A.D. Herick, and Henry Key. The 18-room house at the corner of Bay Street and Bates Avenue today houses the EUSTis Historical Museum and Preservation Society. The Big Freeze of 1894-1895 postponed its completion until 1911. By the early 1900s, Euste was already a winter vacation spot for many. Eustes continues to be a popular winter destination. It is located in Lake County, Florida, on Florida's east shore. It has a population of about 2,000 people and is located on the east shore of Lake Eusta. It was incorporated in 1883 and is now a suburb of Orlando, Florida. It also has a post office, a library, a theater, a bowling alley, a golf course, and a bowling center. The city's first post office was opened in 1876 and was called Pendryville. The post office in the lobby carried the sign "Post Office".
