Apollo Beach is an unincorporated census-designated place in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,055 at the 2010 census, up from 7,444 at the 2000 census. The history of Apollo Beach started in 1923 on land owned by the Dickman family, then used annually for farming and grazing pasture. In 1957, Francis Corr, a retired businessman from Michigan, purchased the land. Legend has it that in 1958 Corr's wife Dorothy suggested a new name for the area's greatest benefit: sunshine. In the early 1960s, Corr sold his company and the Apollo Beach land to a Miami company known as Flora Sun Corporation. In 1984, the Corr family continued to develop the community and donated the land to the community to continue work on the canal system. In 1998, the company filed for bankruptcy and sold the land back to Corr and his son Thomas. The land is now part of the Big Bend Power Station, which is located on the northern border of the CDP. The CDP has a total area of 22.3 square miles (57.7 km²), of which 19.8 sq miles (51.4 km²) are land and 2.4sq miles (6.3km²), or 10.97%, are water. The racial makeup of the community was 87% White, 6% African American, 0% Native American, 2% Asian, 3% from other races, and 2% from two or more races.

Geography

Apollo Beach is the primary city name, but also Ruskin are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Apollo Beach, Florida. Apollo Beach is located in southern Hillsborough County, Florida. U.S. Route 41 crosses the center of the CDP, and Interstate 75 passes through the eastern portion. Downtown Tampa is 17 miles (27 km) to the north, and Bradenton is 25 miles (40 km) south.According to the United States Census Bureau, Apollo Beach CDP has a total area of 22.3 square miles (57.7 km²) of which 19.8 square miles are land and 2.4 square miles, or 10.97%, are water. The unincorporated community of North Ruskin is in the northern part of theCDP. The CDP is bordered by Gibsonton, Riverview, Balm, Sun City Center, and Ruskin. It is also bordered to the east by Balm and to the southeast by Sun City Centre, and by Tampa Bay to the west. It has a population of 2,816. It was named for Apollo Beach, a 19th-century man who lived in the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He is believed to have been one of the first Europeans to arrive in Florida in the 19th century. He was also the first European to visit Tampa Bay in the 18th century, in the early 1800s. The Apollo Beach area was named after the Apollo Beach neighborhood in Tampa, Florida, which is located to the south of Tampa Bay. The name Apollo Beach is derived from the Apollo family, who were among the first to visit the area.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 14,701 people in Apollo Beach and 5,886 households, an increase of nearly 75% in both categories over the 2000 census. New families came in with new construction, with the population of aged five years and under increasing by over 150%. The racial makeup of the community was 87% White, 6% African American, 0% Native American, 2% Asian, 3% from other races, and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14% of the population. 27% of households had children under the age of 18 living with them, and 63% were married couples living together, both higher than the state average. The population of under five years of age increased by more than 150% in the last decade. The community has a population of over 14,000, with 5,000 of those under five living in the community. The average age of a Apollo Beach resident is 24 years old, and the community has more than 1,000 residents over the ages of 18. The state average age for a resident is 25 years old. The percentage of residents aged five and under is more than twice as high as it was in the early 1980s. There are more than 3,000 homes in the town, with 27% having children under 18 living in them. The town has a total population of 14,700, with 6,500 of those being under five and over, and 4,000 over the age 18.

History

The history of Apollo Beach started in 1923 on land owned by the Dickman family, then used annually for farming and grazing pasture. Much of the land was mangrove and low-elevation and was considered uninhabitable. Today Apollo Beach is a thriving waterfront community with year-round boating, fishing, and other water activities. The estimated 55 miles (89 km) of canals lead to Tampa Bay. In 2006, Hillsborough County honored the work of Thomas Corr by naming the new elementary school on Big Bend Road the Thomas P. Corr Elementary School. In the mid-1960s, Corr's son Thomas moved his young family to the area to continue work on the Apollo Beach project. He started a community bank, a chamber of commerce, civic clubs and festivals. He died in 1998. The Apollo Beach area is now home to more than 100,000 people. It is located between U.S. 41 and Golf & Sea Boulevard in Tampa, Florida. The area was once known as "Tampa Beach" because of its association with Tampa, but the name did not properly locate the area geographically. The name was changed to "Apollo Beach" in 1958 for the area's greatest benefit, sunshine. It has been named after the Apollo Islands in the Bahamas, which were once part of the Florida panhandle. The community is located in the Tampa Bay Estuary, between Tampa and Bradenton. The city of Tampa has a population of more than 1.5 million.

The public high school is Apollo Beach High School with about 500 students; the public middle school is called East Bay Middle School with around 100 students; and the high school has over 1,100 students. In addition to the public schools, Apollo Beach also has a charter school that serves the community's low-income residents. It is called Apollo Beach Charter School and Apollo Beach Middle School. It also has an alternative high school that is part of the Apollo Beach Public School system. The community has a number of private schools that are open to the general public, including Apollo Beach Community School. The city's public high schools are Apollo Beach Intermediate, Apollo beach Elementary and Apollo beach High School. There is also an alternative middle school.

Famous Landmark: Big Bend

Apollo Beach is famous for the Big Bend Power Station which provides power to the Tampa Bay area. The power plant is visible across Tampa Bay and especially in Apollo Beach. Big Bend was built in the 1950s and is one of the oldest power stations in the United States. It is located on the banks of Tampa Bay, near the shore of Lake Okeechobee. It was built to provide power to Tampa Bay in the 1960s and 1970s. The station is visible from Apollo Beach and other parts of the Tampa area.
