Littleton

Littleton is a home rule municipality city located in Arapahoe, Douglas, and Jefferson counties, Colorado, United States. The city population was 45,652 at the 2020 United States Census, ranking as the 20th most populous municipality in the State of Colorado. Littleton became widely known in 1999 when the Columbine High School massacre occurred, where two of the school's students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered 12 students and one teacher, injured 23 others and then killed themselves. The school is actually located in adjacent Columbine, an unincorporated community, which is not a place name accepted by the U.S. Postal Service. As a suburb of Denver, Littleton is part of the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area and the Front Range Urban Corridor. It shares a border with Denver and Englewood on the north, Greenwood Village on the northeast, Centennial on the east, Highlands Ranch on the south, Columbine and Columbine Valley on the west, and Bow Mar on the northwest. As of the 2010 census, the city had 41,37 people, 18,724 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,215 square miles (1,241 square km), with 19,176 housing units at an average of 1,497 square mile (578 square km) The racial makeup of the city was 89.0% White, 2.2% Asian, 1.4% African American, 08% Indian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.9% from other races and 2.6% from two more.

History

Littleton is the primary city name, but also Bow Mar, Columbine Valley, Columbine Vly, Denver, Lakewood are acceptable city names or spellings, Grants Ranch on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. Littleton was founded in 1859 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. By 1890, the community had grown to 245 people and the residents voted to incorporate the Town of Littleton. Littleton grew significantly throughout the 1950s and 1960s due to its proximity to Martin Marietta facilities, which produced the Titan rocket and other aerospace products.Littleton became widely known in 1999 when the Columbine High School massacre occurred, where two of the school's students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered 12 students and one teacher. Columbine high school is in the Jefferson County school system and is not one of the Littleton Public Schools. The city is twinned with Bega, Australia in 1961 as one the earliest sister cities. It is located on the Colorado-Arkansas border and is located in the western part of Jefferson County. It has a population of about 2,000 people, making it the second-largest city in Jefferson County, after Littleton, Colorado. The town is home to the University of Colorado, which has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students. It also has a chapter of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which was established in 1858. It was the first college in the state to admit women.

Geography

Littleton is located at 39°3559N 105°039W (39.599691, 105.010929) at an elevation of 5,351 feet (1,631 m) Located in central Colorado at the junction of U.S. Route 85 and Colorado State Highway 470, the city is 9 miles (14 km) south of downtown Denver and 55 miles (89 km) north of Colorado Springs. Littleton lies on the South Platte River in the Colorado Piedmont region of the Great Plains a few miles east of the Front Range of the Southern Rocky Mountains. As a suburb of Denver, Littleton is part of the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area. It shares a border with Denver and Englewood on the north, Greenwood Village on the northeast, Centennial on the east, Highlands Ranch on the south, Columbine and Columbine Valley on the west, and Bow Mar on the northwest. The city is on the same house numbering grid, including its downtown, as the major city, in this case, Denver. According to the United States Census Bureau, the City has a total area of 13.87 square miles (35.9 km²) of which 12.98 squaremile (33.6 km²), (6.4%) is water. It is located in the Denver metropolitan area, which also includes Aurora and Centennial, as well as Centennial and Greenwood Village. It has a population of 3,816.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 41,737 people, 18,312 households, and 10,724 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 89.0% White, 2.2% Asian, 1.4% African American, 0.8% American Indian, 3.9% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. It is the only major highway through the city, and is the main route for the city's central business district. It also has a major airport, which serves as a gateway to the rest of the state. It has one of the lowest homicide rates in the state, with only one person per 1,000 square miles (1.4 per cent of the total population) per year. The average household size is 2.25, with the average family size being 2.93.

Government

Littleton is a home-rule municipality with a council-manager form of government. The city council makes policy for the city and approves the annual city budget. Littleton lies mostly within Colorado's 6th U.S. Congressional District. For the purposes of representation in the Colorado General Assembly, the city is located in the 26th and 30th districts of the Colorado Senate. The place name Littleton was assigned to eleven ZIP codes which cover a vast area west, east, and south of the city much larger than the city itself. Education

The Colorado Center for the Blind is a skills training program for blind teenagers and adults operated by the National Federation of the Blind. Littleton is home to the Colorado State College of Pharmacy and the Denver Seminary. The Colorado State University of the Arts is located in Littleton. The University of Colorado at Boulder is also located in the town. The city's public schools are located in Jefferson and Larimer counties. The Littleton Public School District was established in 1894. The town's first public school was opened in 1875. It was named Littleton High School in 1881. It is now known as the Littleton School District, which was founded in 1883. The district's name is derived from Littleton, Colorado, a town in the state's eastern part. The district has won one regional championship in the past and two state titles in the last three years. It has also been runner-up in the national championships in 2008 and 2009. The city has been the site of the U.S. Open tennis championships in the 1990s and 2010 and the World Series of Nations in the 2000s. The village has been home to a number of high school sports teams, including the University of North Carolina at Littleton and North Carolina- Greensboro. It is also the home of the North Carolina State University football team, which won two national titles in 2000 and 2010. Culture

Western Welcome Week started in the late 1920s, and has been held every year since. Western Welcome Week includes over 40 events benefiting dozens of local civic and charitable organizations. Candlelight Walk is a Littleton tradition, featuring an evening of holiday festivities, culminating in the illumination of the trees on Main Street. Twilight Criterium occurs in theLate summer in Historic Downtown Littleton on a 0.8-mile course. The event features famous athletes, concerts, and a cruiser ride for the general public. The Littleton Symphony Orchestra and Voices West (fka Littleton Chorale) provide professional theater to the surrounding metro area. The Depot Art Gallery and Littleton Fine Arts Guild provide the Littleton Museum with a gallery and gallery space. The Town Hall Arts Center, providing professional theater for the surrounding area, provides the Town Hall Art Gallery with an art gallery and a gallery space, as well as a gallery for the public to view the art work of the town's artists. The Hudson Gardens Gardens provide a botanical garden for the greater Littleton area, with a collection of botanical gardens, a butterfly garden, and an arboretum for the local community.
