Hughson is a city in Stanislaus County, California, United States. It is part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,481 at the 2020 census, up from 6,640 at the 2010 census. The crops grown in Hughson include almonds, peaches, walnuts, nectarines, cherries, apples, and the occasional vineyard. Hughson is located at 37°3611N 120°521W (37.603082, -120.866838). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²), all of it land. The city has been a long-time farming community. Initially, it was known for its enormous production of peaches. Peaches are no longer the primary crop in the area and have been replaced for the most part by almond trees. In recent years, many orchards have been torn down due to development. In 2010, there were 2,069 households, 994 had children under the age of 18 living in them, 1,258 (60.8%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 260 (12.6%) had a female householder with no husband present, and 20 (1.0%) same-sex couples or partnerships. The average household size was 3.20. In the 2000 census there were 3,980 people in the city, and 1,252 families.

History of farming

The school is located in the town of Hughson and has a population of 1,788. The town is located on the banks of the Little Colorado River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the site of the town's only high school, which opened in 1883. It also has a post-secondary school, Hughson State College, which began in 1891. It was founded by Hughson's great-great-grandfather, William Hughson, in 1801. The current mayor is Hughson himself, who was born in 1851. The U.N. Of the 1,223 households, 46.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.8% were non-families. There were 1,628 families (78.7%) and the average household size was 3.64. The median age was 32.8 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.8 males. The city's median income was $40,385, and the per capita income for the city was $25,521. About 16% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12% of those under 18 and 19% of people over 65. The population density was 3,658.0 inhabitants per square mile (1, 412.4/km²) There were 2,234 housing units at an average density of 1,230.7 per squaremile (431.7/km 2) The city had a homeowner vacancy rate of 1.5%; the rental vacancy rate was 13.1%. 4,558 people (68.6%) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 2,063 people (31.1) lived in rental housing units.

Politics

Thom Crowder, Doug Humphreys and Ben Manley were recalled from the City Council in a special election held on August 24, 2010. In the California State Legislature, Hughson is in the 8th Senate District, represented by Democrat Angelique Ashby, and in the 12th Assembly District. He is in California's 10th congressional district, represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by Democrat Josh Harder. Hughson was a member of the San Diego City Council from 2007 to 2010. He was elected to the California Senate in 2008, and to the Assembly in 2009. He served in the California State Legislature from 2008 to 2010, and was re-elected in 2012. He also served as the mayor of San Diego from 2009 to 2012, and served as mayor from 2003 to 2008. He has been married to his wife, Susan, since 2007. They have three children. They live in San Diego and have a son and a daughter, both of whom were born in the United States. They also have a grandson, who was born in 2008. The couple have two grandchildren, who are currently in the process of being re-arrested for allegedly stealing a car. They were also the parents of a son who was killed in a car crash in 2009, and a grandson who was injured in a motorcycle accident in 2010. The family has been through a lot in the last few years, including the death of their father, who died in a single-car crash.

Education

Hughson High School and Emily J. Ross Junior High School serve the students of Hughson and surrounding communities. The Hughson Huskies football team claimed victory in the 1997 State Championships via Cal-Hi sports before CIF state Championships came along in 2007. The Huskies were also Trans Valley League Champions 1969, 1973, 1977, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998. Hughson's Cross Country team were the section champions of Division IV in 2003. They have sent at least one person to the State meet every year since 1999, except 2006 and 2007. They also were CIF San Jouquin Division 3 Title holders in 1991, 1992, 1997, and 2000. The school's football team won the CIF State Championship in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. The football team also won the TV League Championship in 1973, 1974, 1976, and 1977. The cross country team won Division IV State Championships in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. They were also CIF Division 3 State Champions in 1998 and 1999, and Division IV state champions in 2000 and 2001. The high school has had a football team that won the state championship in 1997 and 1998, as well as two other titles in 1999 and 2000, and two more in 2000. In 2007, the school won the State Championship for the first time in the history of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). The school has a football program that has won at least two state titles in each of the last five years.
