Palo Cedro (Spanish for "Cedar Wood") is a census-designated place (CDP) in Shasta County, California, United States. It is 8 miles (13 km) east of Redding, California. Its population is 2,931 as of the 2020 census, up from 1,269 from the 2010 census. The town is named after cedarwood trees originally indigenous to the area in the 19th Century. European American exploration of inland California started in 1769 and continued on into 19th century. Cow Creek, a Sacramento River tributary that runs south through Palo Cedro, was a conduit for entrance into the Sacramento Valley by Hudson Bay Fur Company trappers including Alexander McLeod (1829) and John Work (1832) The Wintu, Patwins, Nozi, Pit Rivers, Hat Creeks, Shastas, Paiutes, and Modoc Indian tribes lived in Northern California prior to European American settlement. Award-winning country musician Merle Haggard lived in Palo Cedo for decades until his death on April 6, 2016. He is survived by his wife, three children, and a step-daughter. The city is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, which flows into the San Francisco Bay. It has a population density of 780 people per square mile (300/km²) and is located in the northern part of California's largest wine region, the Yreka River Valley.

History

The Wintu, Patwins, Nozi, Pit Rivers, Hat Creeks, Shastas, Paiutes, and Modoc Indian tribes. The Wintus established their main camp on Cottonwood Creek. Penutian Indian tribes on the Pacific coast or valley included the Maidu, Miwok, Constanoan, Yokuts, Yanas. The earliest European American history of Palo Cedro comes from the exploration of Hudson's Bay Company trapper Alexander McLeod (c. 1782 11 June 1840) McLeod explored and trapped in the Sacramento Valley as far South as present day Stockton. The first recorded Spanish (or any European) land entry and exploration of the present-day state of California, was the Portolá expedition, in 1769-1770, that led to the founding of Alta California, reaching as far north as San Francisco Bay. In March 1812, the Russian-American Fur Company under Ivan Kuskov established a colony at Fort Ross on the coast of what is now Sonoma County. In 1828, Mt. Shasta was seen by United States fur trapper Jedediah Smith, whom he named Mt. Simpson. In the surrounding area, Work noted there were local Indians who lived in huts, in addition to various wildlife and numerous animals, including deer, elk, grizzly bears, and bear cubs. During their stay, Work said the Indians were weeping and lamenting and burning six fires in the Indian camp.

Geography

Palo Cedro is located at 40°334N 122°143W (40.551091, 122.234255) at an elevation of 465 ft (143 m) above sea level. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.8 square miles (9.8 km²) 98.00% of it is land, and 2.000% is water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The town has a population of 1,856. It is located in the San Diego County, California, United States, at an altitude of 465ft (143m) above the ground. The city's population is 1,744, with the majority of it living in the town of Palo Cedro. The CDP's total area is 3,828 square miles, with 2,000 square miles of land (9,8km²) and 1,200 square kilometers of water (2,000 sq miles) as its total area. It has an area of 4.2 square miles (8.4 km) and an area population of 2,854. It lies in the eastern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, which is home to the city of San Francisco and the city's airport. It also has a small island off the coast of San Diego, California. The area's elevation is 465 feet (143 meters) and it is in the northern section of the city.

The CDP has a population density of 338.1 inhabitants per square mile (130.5/km²) There were 504 housing units at an average density of 134.3 per squaremile (51.9/km 2), of which 411 (86.7%) were owner-occupied, and 63 (13.3) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.9%; the rental vacancy rate is 7.2%.
