Ripon was originally known as Stanislaus City, but was renamed for Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1876. Ripon is located at 37°4426N 121°0742W (37.740478, -121.128224). The city has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14.2 km²), of which 5.3 square miles is land and 13.7 km² is water. The city's economy is largely agriculture based, known especially for its high production of almonds. In 1998, great expansion began for the city. In 2003, the Jack Tone Road intersection was rebuilt, thus beginning a gigantic commercial development for two truck stopsLoves and the Flying J. Three of the city's elementary schools have Academic Performance Index scores above 700 (API) The city is located in the Central Valley Unified School District, which has five elementary schools and one high school. In 2010, the city had a population of 14,297, with 4,119 people under the age of 18, 1,210 people (8.5%) aged 18 to 24, 3,469 people (24.7%) aged 45 to 64, and 1,688 people (11.8%) aged 65 or older. The median age was 37.1 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males. There were 5,129 housing units at an average density of 933.4 per square mile (360.4/km²) The homeowner vacancy rate was 7.4%. 10,4% of the population lived in rental housing and 3,633 people lived in owner-occupied housing.

History

Ripon, Wisconsin was named for Ripon, England. Ripon's economy is largely agriculture based, known especially for its high production of almonds. Areas north of the Golden State (99) Freeway were slated for housing divisions in 1998. In 2003, the Jack Tone Road intersection was rebuilt, thus beginning a gigantic commercial development for two truck stopsLoves and the Flying Jthat year. The next couple of years saw the addition of numerous restaurants and a shopping center. The city was previously known as Murphy's Ferry, Stanislaus City, andStanislaus Station, and was renamed for the English city of Ripon in the 1930s. It is located on the shores of Lake Michigan. It has a population of about 3,000. It was once known as Stanislau City, but was renamed Ripon after the city was named after the English town of the same name in the 1950s. In 1998, great expansion began for the city, with huge swaths of agricultural land being slated for development. The town is now home to more than 2,000 people. It also has a number of businesses, including a grocery store, a bank, a post office, a gas station, a convenience store, and a movie theater, among many others. It's also home to the Ripon International Airport, which was built in the 1960s and 1970s on the site of a former rail yard. The airport is now a major international airport. It opened in 1978.

Geography

Ripon is located at 37°4426N 121°0742W (37.740478, -121.128224).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14.2 km²) of which 5.3 sq miles (13.7 km²), comprising 3.47%, is water. The city is home to the Ripon High School, a public high school, and Ripon Middle School. Ripon is also the home of the American football team Ripon United, which won the National Football League championship in 2007 and 2008. It is also home to Ripon University, a private college, and the University of Ripon, where the football team won the NCAA championship in 2008 and 2009. The town's mascot is the "Hawk" and the city's colors are blue and white. It has a population of 2,816. It was the site of the first U.N. peacekeeping mission in World War II. It also hosted the first United Nations peacekeeping operation in the Pacific Ocean, in 1945. The United States Census Bureau recorded Ripon's population as 2,716 in the 2010 Census. It had a population increase of 1,722 in the 2000 Census. The U. S. Census bureau recorded a population decline of 1.7% in the 1990s. It recorded a growth rate of 3.3% from the 1990 Census to the 2000 census.

The 2010 United States Census reported that Ripon had a population of 14,297. The population was spread out, with 4,119 people (28.8%) under the age of 18, 1,210 people (8.5%) aged 18 to 24, 3,469 people (24.3%) aged 25 to 44, and 3,811 people (26.7%) aged 45 to 64. The median age was 37.1 years. There were 5,129 housing units at an average density of 933.4 per square mile (360.4/km²), of which 3,530 were owner-occupied, and 1,325 (27.3) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.6%; the rental vacancy rates was 7.4%. 10,574 people (74.0% of the population) lived in owner- occupied housing units and 3, 633 people (25.4%) lived in rental housing units. The average household size was 2.93; the average family size was 3.34; and the average town population was 11,392 (79.7%), according to the 2010 U.S. Census. The city is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and is on the California Bay Area Coast. It is home to the California State University, San Francisco. The town's name is derived from the Ripon River, which runs through the city. It was once known as the "Ripon River".

Transportation

Ripon station is an Altamont Corridor Express commuter rail station planned to be constructed for service starting in 2023. The station will be located in the city of Ripon, California. It is expected to be completed in time for the 2023 start of commuter rail service. It will be the first station in Ripon to be built on the Altamonte Corridor Express line. It has a planned capacity of 2,000 riders per day.

Students are served by five K8 elementary schools (self-contained at all grade levels), and one high school by Ripon Unified School District. The total number of students in the school district has more than 2,000. The current school population is 2,700, with an average of 1,800 students in each grade level. It has a population of 3,000, with the majority of its students living in the central valley of California, where it is located. The majority of the district's students live in the town of Ripon.
