Bonsall

Bonsall is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California. The population was 3,982 at the 2010 census, up from 3,401 at the 2000 census. The area known as Bonsall was originally called Mount Fairview and had a post office by that name from 1871 to 1880. It received a postoffice in 1881 under the name Osgood, after California Southern Railroad chief engineer Joseph O. Osgood. The renaming was supposedly an unsuccessful attempt to convince Osgood to build the railroad through the San Luis Rey River Valley (the rail line eventually followed the Santa Margarita River instead). Following a contest, the town was renamed Bonsal in 1890, after local minister James A. Bons all. The BonsAll area was heavily affected by the Lilac Fire in December 2017, which burned 4,100 acres. The CDP has a total area of 13.6 square miles (35 km²), of which 0.2 square miles is land and 0.52 km² or (1.28%) is water. The census reported that 3,967 people (99.6% of the population) lived in households, 15 (0.4%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and no one was institutionalized. The age distribution was 844 people (21.2%) under the age of 18, 278 people (7.0%) aged 18 to 24, 913 people (22.9%) aged 25 to 44, 1,262 people (31.7%) aged 45 to 64, and 685 people (17. 2%) who were 65 or older.

Name

The area known as Bonsall was originally called Mount Fairview. It received a post office in 1881 under the name Osgood, after California Southern Railroad chief engineer Joseph O. Osgood. Following a contest, the town was renamed Bonsal in 1890, after local minister James A. Bons all. The town is located in the San Luis Rey River Valley of Southern California, near the border with Bakersfield and Los Angeles. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with about 1,000 of them living in the town of BONSAL, which was founded in 1871. It is located on the Santa Margarita River, which is a tributary of the San Diego River. It was named after the Santa Maria River, one of the main sources of water for the San Francisco Bay area of California in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The city's name is derived from the Spanish word "bonsall" which means "hill" or "mount" in Spanish, and means a place where people used to live. It also means "bouncy" in English, meaning a place with a lot of people. The name was adopted by the townspeople in the early 1800s to refer to the area's many horses. It became known as "Bonsal" in 1890 after the town's first post office was opened in the area. It had a name of "Mount Fairview" until December 28, 1871, when it was renamed "Osgood".

Geography

Bonsall is just east of Oceanside and Camp Pendleton, north of Vista and northwest of Hidden Meadows. The CDP has a total area of 13.6 square miles (35 km²) of which 0.2 square mile (0.52 km²), or (1.28%) is water. It is located in the San Diego County, California, United States. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the population of Bonsall at 1,816. The population of the CDP as of the 2010 United States Census was 1,788. It has a population density of 1,077.7 per square mile, or 1,087.3 per square kilometer (1,078.3/km²) with 1,069.7 square miles as its total area. The town is located on the California coast. It was founded in the early 1900s by the California Gold Rush. The community is located near the San Francisco Bay Area. It also has a small section of the San Fernando Valley. The city's name comes from the Spanish word "bonsall" which means "hill" or "mountain" and translates to "hill of". It is also known as "Bonsal" in Spanish and "Bonesall" in English. The area has a history of being part of the Spanish-speaking world. It became part of California in the late 1800s and the Spanish language was introduced.

Demographics

At the 2010 census Bonsall had a population of 3,982. There were 1,542 households, 451 of which had children under the age of 18 living in them. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.02. The median income for a household in the CDP was $60,625 and the median family income was $61,761. The racial makeup was 80.2% White, 67 (1.7%) African American, 28 (0.7) Native American, 138 (3.5%) Asian, 10 (0,3%) Pacific Islander, 376 (9.4%) from other races, and 169 (4.2%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.4%. The census reported that 3,967 people (99.6% of the population) lived in households, 15 (0.,4%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and no one was institutionalized. The population density was 293.5 inhabitants per square mile (113.3/km²), with 1,357 housing units at an average density of 100.7 per squaremile (38.9/ km²) The age distribution was 23.2 years old and 31.7 years old, with the median age of 44.1 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.7 males, and for every 100. females age 18 and over there were 98.6 males.

Education

Bonsall is served by the Bonsall Unified School District consisting of three elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. The district was established in the 1950s. The school district is one of the largest in the state. It is located in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. The town has a population of about 4,000. The city is located on the California U.S. Insurance Commissioner’s District and the California Highway Commissioners’ District. It also has a number of private schools, including a private high school and a private middle school. There are no high schools in the district, but the district does have a middle and high school, as well as an elementary school. It has a large number of homeless people, many of whom live in the town. The community is also home to the Santa Catalina Cities of Santa Carmen and Santa Loma Nina, and the town's municipality of San Germans. The city of Bonsal is home to a large percentage of the city's homeless people. The population of the town is about 3,000, with the majority living in the city center. The majority of the residents are Hispanic or Latino. The area has a high percentage of African-American residents, with a high proportion of the Hispanic population in the downtown area. Bonsal has a low percentage of white residents, and has a small percentage of black residents.

Politics

In the California State Legislature, Bonsall is in the 38th Senate District, represented by Democrat Catherine Blakespear. In the U.S. House of Representatives, it is in California's 50th congressional district. In June 1988, voters defeated a ballot initiative to create a Community Services District ("CSD") after opponents argued that the boundaries included too many county taxpayers who more closely associated with neighboring cities Vista and Fallbrook rather than the unincorporated Bonsal community. The community is located in the San Diego County, California, in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. The town has a population of about 6,000. It is located on the San Andreas Fault, which runs through the town. The San Diego River flows through the city, and runs through a portion of the town's eastern edge. The BonsAll Canyon, a small canyon, is located just south of the city. It was named after the Bonsalls, a Native American tribe who lived in what is now called the "Bonsall Canyon" region of the Santa Catalina Mountains in the western part of the county. The area is home to the San Francisco Bay Area, which is also known as "The Bay Area" and "The Santa Catalans" The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a winery, a restaurant, a bank, and a golf course. It also has a small number of golf courses, including one that was built in the early 1900s.
