Montclair

Montclair is a city in the Pomona Valley, in southwestern San Bernardino County, California. The population was 36,664 in the 2010 United States Census. The earliest known inhabitants of the area were from the Serrano tribe of Native Americans. The San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) runs through the northern part of the city. Montclair is bordered by Pomona to the west, Claremont and Upland to the north, Ontario to the east, and Chino to the south. The city is on the border with Los Angeles County, and is in the Inland Empire region of the U.S. It is located on the San Bernardino River, which flows into the San Diego River at the western border of the county. It was founded in 1897 as a "Township of Marquette" and named "Monte Vista" in 1900. The Monte Vista tract experienced growth in residential development after the Second World War, and the tract was incorporated as the city of Monte Vista on April 25, 1956. Due to conflict with the Post Office, which refused to open an office in Monte Vista due to a name conflict with a community in Northern California, the city was renamed Montclair on April 8, 1958. The census reported that 36,268 people (98.9% of the population) lived in households, 215 (0.6%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 181 (0.5%) were institutionalized. The racial makeup of Montclair was 19,337 (52.7%) White (14.4% Non-Hispanic White), 1,908 (5.2%) African American, 434 (1.2) Native American, 3,425 (9.3%) Asian, 74 (0%) Pacific Islander, 9,882 (27.0%) from other races, and 1,604 (4.4%) from two or more races.

History

The earliest known inhabitants of the area were from the Serrano tribe of Native Americans. The Serrano established their village along a creek named Arroyo de los Alisos, now named San Antonio Creek. In 1897, a "Township of Marquette" was founded within the borders of the modern city of Montclair. In 1900, a 1,000 acres (4.0 km²) tract of land was surveyed and named "Monte Vista" Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the settlement was largely devoted to citrus orchards. The Monte Vista tract experienced growth in residential development after the Second World War, and the tract was incorporated as the city of Monte Vista on April 25, 1956. Due to conflict with the Post Office, which refused to open an office in Monte Vista due to a name conflict with a community in Northern California, the city was renamed Montclair on April 8, 1958. The city's name was changed to Montclair by the end of the 1950s, and it was officially incorporated as a city on April 26, 1959. The name Montclair was adopted by the state of California on April 28, 1959, after a vote of the residents of the city. It is the only city in the state to be named after a former president of the United States, George H.W. Bush, who died in office in 1961. It has been the site of the U.S. Air Force's first test flight over the Aleutian Islands in the early 1950s.

Geography

Montclair is on the border with Los Angeles County. It is in the Pomona Valley and part of the Inland Empire region. The San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) runs through the northern part of city. The city is bordered by Pomona to the west, Claremont and Upland to the north, Ontario to the east, and Chino to the south. The town is located in the San Bernardino County foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. It has a population of about 3,000 people, according to the city's 2010 census. It was founded in the early 1800s by settlers from Southern California and the San Francisco Bay Area. The area is known as the "Montclair Valley" and is home to the Montclair High School and Montclair Junior High School, which were founded in 1883 and 1883 respectively.

Demographics

At the 2010 census Montclair had a population of 36,664. The racial makeup of Montclair was 19,337 (52.7%) White (14.4% Non-Hispanic White), 1,908 (5.2%) African American, 434 (1.2) Native American, 3,425 (9.3%) Asian, 74 (0.2!) Pacific Islander, 9,882 (27.0%) from other races, and 1,604 (4.4%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 25,744 persons (70.2%). There were 9,066 housing units at an average density of 1,778.3 per square mile (686.6/km²) The median income for a household in the city was $30,902, and the median family income was $32,797. Montclair is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New Jersey, New York, New Jersey and Long Island. The city's population was 33,049 at the census of 2000, and 36,268 in 2010. The median age of the city is 30.7 years, and for every 100 females, there were 99.1 males. The homeowner vacancy rate was 2.0%; the rental vacancy rate is 4.6%. 21,076 people (57.5% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 15,192 people (41.4!) lived in rental housing units.

Government

The City of Montclair is a General Law City and operates as a City Council-City Manager form of government. The current mayor is Javier "John" Dutrey, and the other members of the city council are Mayor Pro-Tem Bill Ruh, Tenice Johnson, Corysa Martinez and Benjamin "Ben" Lopez. The City Council meeting is held on the first and third Monday of each month beginning at 7:00 p.m. The city is in California's 35th congressional district, represented by Democrat Norma Torres. In the California State Legislature, Montclair is in the 20th Senate District, and in the 52nd Assembly District,  represented by Democrats Freddie Rodriguez and Caroline Menjivar. The mayor is a Democrat, as is the city manager, who is a Republican, as are the mayor and city council members. The city has a population of 3,000. The council has a majority of Democrats. The Mayor is a Democratic, as does the city's mayor Pro- tem, Bill RUh. The state legislature has a Democratic majority, as do the U.S. House of Representatives, with a Democrat representing Montclair in the 35th district. Montclair has a mayor pro-tem, as well as a mayor and a city council member, and has a City Manager, who manages the day-to-day operations. the city has an average of 1,000 residents, as opposed to the state's average of 2,500. The average city population is 3,200.

Notable residents

Nick Rimando (born 1979), retired Major Soccer League player. Vince Velasquez (born 1992), Major League Baseball pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. Matt Wise (born 1975), retired MLB pitcher and bullpen coach for the Los Angeles Angels. Nick Rimando is the son of former Major League Soccer player Bob Rimando. He is also the brother of former MLB pitcher Vince Velasquez. He also has a brother, Matt Wise, who is also a Major League baseball pitcher. He was born in 1975 and grew up in the San Diego suburb of San Diego. He has two brothers, Nick and Vince, who also live in the city. He lives with his wife and two children in San Diego's Westfield-Westfield neighborhood. He works as a coach at the University of California, Los Angeles. His brother, Vince, also works at the university's baseball training facility. He and his wife are married and have two children. They have a son, Nick, and a daughter, Vicky, who lives in San Francisco. They also have another son, Matt, who plays for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL's San Francisco Bay Area. They are also the parents of Matt Wise who is a retired MLB Baseball pitcher. They live with their wife, Viki, in Los Angeles and have three other children. The family also has two other sons, Vince and Nicky, who play for the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies, respectively. They were born in 1979 and 1992.
