Temecula (; Spanish: Temécula, [te'mekula]; Luiseño: Temeekunga) is a city in southwestern Riverside County, California, United States. The city had a population of 110,003 as of the 2020 census and was incorporated on December 1, 1989. The area was inhabited by the Temecula Indians for hundreds of years before their contact with the Spanish missionaries (the people are now generally known as the Luiseños, after the nearby Mission San Luis Rey de Francia) The city is a tourist and resort destination. It is approximately 58 miles (93 km) north of downtown San Diego and 85 miles (137 km) southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Although Temeculas is geographically closer to downtown SanDiego than downtown L.A., it is considered part of the Greater Los Angeles area. In Pechanga history, life on Earth began in the TemECula Valley. They call it "'Éxva Temeéku", the place of the union of Sky-father, and Earth-mother ("Tuukumit'pi Tamaayowit"). The first recorded Spanish visit occurred in October 1797, with a Franciscan padre, Father Juan Norberto de Santiago, and Captain Pedro Lisalde. Father Santiago kept a journal in which he noted seeing "temecula... an Indian village". The trip included the Lake Elsinore area and the Tem Cecula Valley, which is now part of Riverside County.

Geography
Temecula has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa) August is typically the hottest month of the year with December being the coldest month. Winter storms generally bring moderate precipitation, but strong winter storms are not uncommon especially during "El Niño" years. Annual precipitation is 14.14 inches (359 mm) A rare F1 tornado touched down in a Temecula neighborhood on February 19, 2005. The city has a total area of 37.28 square miles (96.6 km²), of which 37.27 square miles of it is land and 0.012 sq miles (0.031 km²) is water. South of the city, Murrieta Creek and Temeculas Creek join to form the Santa Margarita River. The driest month is June, with February being the wettest. Snowfall is rare, but the city has experienced traces of snowfall on occasion, some as recently as December 2014. It is located on the Santa Ana River, which flows into the San Diego River. It has a population of 2,816. It was founded in 1836. It became a city in 1838. It received its first post-Civil War name in 1852. It had its first public school in 1854. It suffered a fire in 1875, which led to the founding of the City of Temeculula in 1876. It also suffered a devastating earthquake in 1877, which claimed the lives of 3 people.

Tourism
The Temecula Valley Wine Country features over 40 wineries, a variety of tasting rooms, and more than 3,500 acres (14 km²) of producing vineyards. The annual Temeculas Valley Balloon & Wine Festival, held at nearby Lake Skinner, offers live entertainment, hot air balloon rides, and wine tasting. In 2002, the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians opened the $262 million PeChanga Resort & Casino outside city limits. The city's downtown district is a collection of historic buildings, hotels, museums, event centers, specialty food stores, restaurants, boutiques, gift and collectible stores, and antique dealers. Old Town is also home to special events like the Rod Run car show, Art and Street Painting Festival, Santa's Electric Parade Show, western days, and summer entertainment. The City Hall is located in the center of Old Town, and Old Town has an outdoor farmers' market featuring approximately 70 to 80 local vendors. There are several local golf courses, including Pechanga's Journey, Redhawk, Temeculum Creek Inn, The Legends Golf Club at Temeku Hills, CrossCreek, Pala Mesa Resort (near Fallbrook) and The Golf Club in Murrieta. The Temeculula Valley Museum features exhibits about the local band of Native Americans and the local natural history and city development. It employs 5,000 people and is Temeculu Valley's largest employer. It also hosts a growing nightlife.
Sports
Temecula is home to the Temecula Valley Inline Hockey Association (TVIHA), a local inline hockey organization that provides school and recreational programs. The area used to have another semi-pro soccer team, the Murrieta Bandits, in the 2000s. Boxing and Mixed martial arts fight cards are held at Pechanga Resort & Casino. Metal Mulisha is a Freestyle Motocross group with members such as Brian Deegan, Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg, and Ronnie Faisst living in or near Temeculas. The Wine Town Rollers (WTR) roller derby league has been based in Temeculula since 2012. The town is also the home to a semi- pro soccer team called the Quails (a.k.a. the Quail) The town has a history of being home to several professional football teams, including the Los Angeles Galaxy and the San Diego Chargers. The city is also known as the home for the California High School Football Association (CHSFA) and the California State University, San Diego (CSU) football teams. It is also home to an amateur boxing league, the TemECulula Boxing Association (TBA), which has been around since the 1970s. It has also hosted a number of professional boxing and mixed martial arts events. The community also has its own version of the National Football League (NFC), the San Francisco 49ers, and the Southern California 49ers.
Parks and recreation
Temecula has 41 parks, 22 miles (35 km) of trails, and 14 major community facilities. In 2013, it was named a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community.
