Rancho Santa Margarita is a city in Orange County, California, United States. At 20 characters long (22 including spaces), it is the longest city name in California. The population was 47,853 at the 2010 census, up from 47,214 at the 2000 census.Hughes Aircraft Company's Microelectronic Systems Division moved to Rancho SantaMargarita in May 1988 from Irvine. History
Rancho Santa Margarita is the primary city name, but also Rancho Sta Marg, Rcho Sta Marg, Rsm are acceptable city names or spellings. The area is the ancestral lands of the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation. In 1810, the Trabuco Adobe was constructed near the village as an outpost of Mission San Juan Capistrano.Rolling Hills Estates had the longest city name in California with 19 letters until January 1, 2000, when the title was ceded to Rancho Santa Margarita (20 letters) upon the latter's incorporation. The city is a general law city and operates under the council-manager form of government. Police services are provided through contract with the Orange County Sheriff. Fire Protection services areprovided through the Orange county Fire Authority. The City is a contract city. It was founded in the early 1900s by a group of cattle ranchers who moved to the area from Southern California. The town was named after the town's founder, who was born in the town of Rancho SantaMargarita in the 1800s. The city is home to the San Diego County Air Force Reserve Base, which is located in Rancho SantaMargarita. The San Diego Air Force Base has a base in Mission Viejo, California. The base is located near the city of San Diego and is part of the California Air Force Academy campus. The Air Force base is also home to a base for the California National Guard, which operates out of the base's base in San Diego. The U.S. Air Force Museum is based in the city and has a museum in the town of Rancho Santa Margaritas. The museum is located on the base and is open to the public.
