Penn Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Nevada County, California. The population was 1,621 at the 2010 census, up from 1,387 at the 2000 census. The community may be named for Madame Penn, the original owner of the town site. Penn Valley is located at 39°1154N 121°1120W (39.198214, -121.188965).According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²), all of it land. The racial makeup of Penn Valley was 93.4% White, 0.8% African American, 0.6% Native American,0.7% Asian, 5.5% from other races, and 2.4%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 143 persons (8.8%) The median age was 44.5 years, with 363 people (22.4%) under the age of 18. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males. There were 666 housing units at an average density of 313.9 per square mile (121.2/km²), of which 485 (77.2%) were owner-occupied. The homeowner vacancy rate was 2.6%; the rental vacancy rate is 3.3%. 1,186 people (73.2% of the population) lived in owner- occupied housing units and 425 people (26.2%).

History

The community may be named for Madame Penn, the original owner of the town site. The town site is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The community is located near the town of Poughkeepsie, New York. The site was once known as the Poynter River Site. It is now the site of the Poughnaw Indian Reservation, which was established in 1881. The Poyntaw Indian reservation was established on the site in 1883. The area was named for the Puyallup River, which runs through the town. The village was founded in 1885, and was named after the town's original owner, Madame Penn. It has a population of about 2,000 people, most of whom live in the town center. It was founded by the Pahntaw Indians in the 19th century, and later expanded to include surrounding areas. The U.S. state of New York was once part of the Tusque River Valley, and the town was once called Poughnotnaw, New Jersey. The current name of the community is Poughntaw, which is part of New Jersey, and may be related to the Pohntaw River. It may also have been named after Madame Penn's daughter, who owned the site at the time of its founding. It also may be known as Poughnownaw County, New Hampshire, where the town is located. The name Poughttaw is a corruption of the word "Pawpaw" which means "proud" or "caring".

The local Fire Department and residents volunteered their time and efforts to help put on the annual event. The event quickly became "the summer event" for people from all over California to attend. It is organized by Penn Valley Community Rodeo Association since 2005. The rodeo is free and open to the public, but there is a $5 entry fee for the rodeo, which includes a t-shirt, food, and souvenirs.
