Le Grand is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Merced County, California, United States. The name honors William Le Grand Dickinson, who sold the railroad land for the town in 1896. The population was 1,592 at the 2020 census, down from 1,659 at the 2010 census. Le Grand is located at 37°1343N 120°1454W. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Le Grand has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csa" on climate maps. It is located 14 miles (23 km) east-southeast of Merced, the county seat at an elevation of 253 feet (77 m) The CDP has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²), all of it land. At the 2000 census, according to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP had a totalArea of 3.6 squaremile (9.3 km²) The population density was 491.4 people per square mile (189/km²) The racial makeup of Le Grand was 4977% African American, 028% Native American, 153% Asian, 040% Pacific Islander, 42% from other races and 494% from two or more races. The whole population lived in households, no one lived in non-institutionalized group quarters and no one was institutionalized. The median age was 31.5 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.4 males.

History

The name honors William Le Grand Dickinson, who sold the railroad land for the town. The first post office opened in 1896. The town is located on the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad, later the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Valley Division. It has a population of about 1,000. The post office is located in the center of the town, near the intersection of Main Street and Main Street. The name of the post office was given after Dickinson sold the land to the railroad in 1894. It was named after Dickinson, the owner of the railroad, and the town's name means "land for the land" in Spanish, "le grand" or "grand" in English. It is located near the junction of the Santa Fe and San Francisco railroads, which was once known as the San Francisco and San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad, and later the Atchison and Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Valley Division of the U.S. Railway (US R F A V D E L). The town was founded in 1896 and named for Dickinson, a former railroad officer and owner of the S F&S railway division in California. The town's first post office opened in 1896, and it is still called "Le Grand Dickinson" today.

The CDP has a total population of 1.1, with the majority of its residents living in the town of Le Grand. The town has a population of 2.2, with most of its people living in Le Grand and the surrounding area. Le Grand is a part of the Merced-Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the cities of Merced, Yuba City, and Merced Springs. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the town's population at 1.3, with 1.2% of its population living in or near Le Grand, and 1.4% in the surrounding areas. The city has a latitude of 37.3°N, and a longitude of 120°W. It is located at 37.1343 N, 120.1454 W, and has a climate of warm summer Mediterranean, with an average monthly temperature of °C (°F) of 3.6 °F (°C) The town's elevation is 3.1 square miles (7.7 km), with the average annual rainfall of 1.8 square miles (2.8 km²).

Demographics

At the 2010 census Le Grand had a population of 1,659. The racial makeup of Le Grand was 869 (52.4%) White, 19 (1.1%) African American, 35 (2.0%) Native American, 17 (1%) Asian, 1 (0.1) Pacific Islander, 659 (39.7%) from other races, and 59 (3.6%) from two or more races. The whole population lived in households, no one lived in non-institutionalized group quarters and no one was institutionalized. The median household income was $29,894 and the median income for females was $26,094. About 18.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.8% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% ofThose 65 and over. The average household size was 3.80 and the average family size was3.98. The population density was 491.4 people per square mile (189.8/km²). There were 482 housing units at an average density of 134.6 per squaremile (52.0/ km²). The racial make-up of the CDP was 49.77% White, 0.57% African American, 1.53% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 42.50% from other Races, and 4.94% from 2 or more Races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 78.81%. The median age was 31.5 years.

Government

In the California State Legislature, Le Grand is in the 12th Senate District, represented by Republican Shannon Grove. In the U.S. House of Representatives, he is in California's 16th congressional district. He is a member of the California Democratic Party and the California Republican Party. Le Grand has been married to his wife, Barbara, for more than 30 years. The couple have two children, a son and a daughter, both of whom are in the United States House of Reps. They also have a son who is a firefighter and a son-in-law who is also a firefighter. The family has lived in California since the 1970s and moved to Southern California in the 1990s. They currently live in Los Angeles and have a home in San Diego, where they live with their daughter and son- in-law. They have also lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles since the late 1980s and early 1990s, when they first moved to California. They are currently living in California with their son, who is in his first year of college. They plan to move to San Diego in the fall, when he finishes his studies at the University of California, San Diego. They previously lived in Southern California and the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to Los Angeles in the late 1990s and the early 2000s. In 2008, the family moved to the Los Angeles area, where Le Grand lived with his wife and two children. In 2010, the couple moved to a new home in the San Diego suburb of San Diego and began a new life.
