Redwood Valley (formerly Basil) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mendocino County, California, United States. It is located 9 miles (14 km) north of Ukiah, the county seat, at an elevation of 722 feet (220 m) The ZIP Code is 95470, and the community is in area code 707. The population of the CDP was 1,843 at the 2020 census.Jim Jones' Peoples Temple was located in Redwood Valley for a short time. The site was chosen because Jones believed that it was one of the few places in the world likely to survive a nuclear holocaust. The place was called "Basil" by the railroad when it reached there; when the post office opened in 1920, the place wascalled "Redwood valley" The CDP covers an area of 2.7 square miles (7.0 km²), 99.56% of it land and 0.44% ofit water. The Census reported that 1,723 people (99.7% of the population) lived in households, and 0 (0%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters.

History

Redwood Valley is the primary city name, but also Redwood Vly are acceptable city names or spellings. The place was called "Basil" by the railroad when it reached there. Jim Jones' Peoples Temple was located in Redwood Valley for a short time. The site was chosen because Jones believed that it was one of the few places in the world likely to survive a nuclear holocaust. The post office opened in 1920, and the place was known as "Redwood Valley" The place was also the site of Black Bart's first radio station, the Black Bart Radio Network, which operated for a few weeks in the 1950s and 1960s. The station was located at the base of the Redwood Mountains in northern California, near the town of Redwood Springs. The radio station was closed in the 1970s and 1980s, when Black Bart moved to the nearby town of Laredo, Texas, to be closer to his base of operations at the University of California, Los Angeles. The Black Bart radio network was shut down in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and Black Bart returned to the area to operate his radio station. The Peoples Temple is located at Redwood Hill, in the town's northern part, where Black Bart lived for a time in the 1960s and 1970s. Black Bart operated a radio station in the area until the late 1990s. He later left the area, and moved to Los Angeles in the early 2000s, where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service. He died in 2005, at the age of 80, and was buried at the site in a shallow grave.

Geography

Redwood Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mendocino County, California.It is at the headwaters of the West Fork of the Russian River.The CDP covers an area of 2.7 square miles (7.0 km²), 99.56% of which is land and 0.44% is water. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the CDP has a population of 1,816. The CDP is located in the eastern part of the county, near the town of Redwood Valley, which is in the northern part of Mendocinos County. It is located at an elevation of 2,822 feet (7,823 meters) and has a land area of 7,038 feet (2,838 meters) according to the United States Census Bureau. The area has a total area of 0.4 square miles (0.7 km²), including 0.3 square miles (1.0 sq mi) of land and 0.2 sq miles (2.3 km²) of water. It has a latitude and longitude of 35.7 miles (62.5 km) and an altitude of 7.4 miles (11.7 km) to the top of the mountain. It was founded in the 18th century, and is located near the head of the River Russian. The town was named after the Redwood River, which flows through the area.

Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported that Redwood Valley had a population of 1,729. There were 676 housing units at an average density of 246.0 per square mile (95.0/km²), of which 475 (74.2%) were owner-occupied, and 165 (25.8%) were occupied by renters. In 2000, the United States did not define a census-designated place, but it did define a Zip Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) in the area, 95470. Because of this, it is possible to obtain Census data for the area even though data for "Redwood Valley" is unavailable. The median income for a household in the ZIP code was $112.44, and the median family income was $114.02. The population was spread out, with 411 people under the age of 18, 144 people (8.3%) aged 18 to 24, 390 people (22.6%) aged 25 to 44, 562 people (32.5%) aged 45 to 64, and 222 people (12.8) who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.06. In 2010, 1,723 people (99.7% of the population) lived in households, and 0 (0%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters.

Politics

Redwood Valley is in Mendocino County's 1st Supervisors district. It is in California's 2nd congressional district, represented by Democrat Jared Huffman. In the state legislature, it is in the 2nd Senate District and 2nd Assembly District. Redwood Valley has a population of about 2,000. The town is located near the town of Redwood Springs, in the northern part of the county. It was founded in the early 20th century as a farming community. It has a history of being heavily affected by the Great Depression. It also suffered through the Great Recession of the 1980s and 1990s. The city has a reputation for being a hotbed of illegal activity, particularly among young people. The area has been the site of several violent crimes, including the murders of two men and the wounding of two women in the 1990s and early 2000s. In 2008, the town was the site of a mass shooting that killed four people. It is now home to a community of about 1,000 people, including a handful of high school students and a number of college students. Redwood Valley is primarily residential and agricultural. The primary crop by far is winegrapes, with many estate and independent vineyards. There are over a dozen wineries in the area, which participate in an annual wine-tasting event each Father's Day called A Taste of Redwood Valley. The area is home to a number of wineries, many of which are family-owned and operated. The town has a population of just over 1,000, with most of its residents living in or near the Redwood River valley. It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, near the city of San Francisco and the town of San Jose. It has a reputation for being a wine-growing hotbed, especially in the late summer and early fall when the grape harvest is at its peak. Redwood Valley Elementary School was closed in June 2010. UUSD students from the area attend Ukiah High School in Ukiah for grades 912. Redwood Valley is the home of Deep Valley Christian School (Preschool to High School) which is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The area is also home of the Redwood valley Outdoor Education Project, an organization which works with elementary schools in the district to provide hands-on science education. The school district is part of the Ukiah Unified School District, which is based in the city of Ukiah. The district is one of the largest school districts in the state of California, with more than 2,000 students in grades 6-12. It is home to a number of non-profit organizations, including the Redwoods Foundation, which provides grants to local charities. It also has its own chapter of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), which provides free and reduced-price lunches to students. The NCTE also provides a scholarship program for students who want to attend college or the University of California at San Francisco. It has a chapter of NTCE in San Francisco, which also provides free or reduced-priced lunches for students in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Los Angeles area. It was founded by the NCCE in the 1950s to help students through college and beyond. In the 1980s, the NTCS started a program to provide free or low-cost meals to low-income students in California.

Other places of interest

Redwood Valley is home to the Redwood Valley Rancheria and the Coyote Valley Reservation of the native Pomo people. Abhayagiri Monastery and Holy Transfiguration Monastery are located at the north end of the valley. The Redwood River runs through the valley, which was once a tributary of the San Francisco Bay. The river was once known as the Red River, and was used by the Pomo as a source of water. It was also used by Native Americans as a way to get water to their homes, and is still used by today's Native Americans. It is also used as a place of pilgrimage by the U.S. Coast Guard, which uses the river as a route to get to and from ports and other points of interest. The valley is also home to a number of other places of interest, such as the San Diego Zoo and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which were once part of the California Gold Rush.
