South El Monte

South El Monte is a city in the San Gabriel Valley, in Los Angeles County, California, United States. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 20,116, down from 21,144 at the 2000 census. The city has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.4 km²), virtually all land. The racial makeup of South El Monte was 10,136 (50.4%) White (3.4% Non-Hispanic White), 107 (0.5%) African American, 250 (1.2%) Native American, 2,211 (11.0%) Asian, 12 (0.1%) Pacific Islander, 6,718 (33.4) from other races, and 682 (3%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17,079 persons (84.9%). The census reported that 20,059 people (99.7% of the population) lived in households, 47 (0.) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 10 (0%) were institutionalized. The median household income was $44,104, with 19.4 per cent of the residents living below the federal poverty line. The average household size was 4.39, with 4,003 families (87.6% of households) living in the city. The population density was 7,330.8 inhabitants per square mile (2,834.6/km²). There were 4,724 housing units at an average density of 1,637.8 per squaremile (632.4/ km²).

Geography

South El Monte is the primary city name, but also El Monte, S El Monte are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of South El Monte. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.4 km²), virtually all land. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have been named after a president or a president of the United States. It has a population of about 2,000. It was named after the 19th-century town of the same name, which was once known as "The City of the Stars" The city's name is derived from the French word for the river, which is believed to have originated from the city's ancient name, "Le Monde" or "The River" (meaning "the river" in French). It is also known as the "City of the Sun" because of its large number of sunspots, which were common in the early 19th century. It also has the name of the town's founder, who was born in the town in 1881. It's the only town in the U S. to have had a president, Abraham Lincoln, as well as a president and vice-president, both of whom were born in New York City. Its population is about 1,500, and it has a history of being called "the city of the sun" or the city of "the sun" by some locals. The town's name means "the place of the sunshine" in Spanish.

Demographics

At the 2010 census South El Monte had a population of 20,116. There were 4,711 housing units at an average density of 1,653.7 per square mile, of the occupied units 2,208 (48.3%) were owner-occupied and 2,361 (51.7%) were rented. The city had a median household income of $44,104, with 19.4% of the population living below the federal poverty line. At the 2000 census there were 21,144 people in 4,620 households, including 4,088 families, in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 40.61% White, 0.38% African American, 1.57% Native American, 8.43% Asian, 0,18% Pacific Islander, 43.98% from other races, and 4.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 86.03%.Of the 4,000 households 52.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0%. There were 329 (7.2%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 21 (0.5%) same-sex married couples or partnerships. The average household size was 4.39. The median age was 30.4 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.9 males. The city has a population density of 7,330.8 inhabitants per squaremile (2,834.6/km²).

Education

The El Monte Union High School District operates South El Monte High School. Asahi Gakuen, a part-time Japanese school, operates its San Gabriel campus (Sangburu-k) at South El Monte High School. The El Monte City and Mountain View School Districts operate elementary and high school schools in El Monte and Valle Lindo, respectively. There are no private schools in the El Monte area. The city is home to the University of California, San Bernardino, which was founded in 1875. The University of California, Santa Barbara, which opened in 1883, is located in the city's downtown area. It is the oldest university in the state. The university has a campus in San Gabriel, California, which is located near the city of El Monte. The town has a population of about 3,000. The school district has a history of more than 100 years. It was established in 1876. It has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the city center. The mayor is Gloria Olmos, and the mayor pro tem is Manuel Acosta. The council is made up of four members: a mayor, two council members, and a councilwoman. The current mayor is Gloria Olmos; the city council members are Hector Delgado, Richard Angel, Gracie Retamoza, and Gracie Retamoza. The state legislature is represented by Democrats Lisa Calderon and Mike Fong; the state house is represented by Linda Sánchez. The U.N. has a consulate in the town, which is open to international visitors. It also has a police force, which was established in the early 1900s. The police force was created in the 1950s. It was later expanded to include a fire department and a sheriff's department.
