Garden Valley is an unincorporated community in El Dorado County, California.It is located on Johntown Creek 6.25 miles (10 km) north-northwest of Chili Bar, at an elevation of 1949 feet (594 m) A post office operated at Garden Valley from 1852 to 1853, from 1854 to 1862, and from 1872 to 1895. The name was changed in recognition that marketing vegetables was more lucrative than gold mining. The Black Oak Mine Unified School District serves Garden Valley. The population in Garden Valley was 3,929 as of the 2020 census (having moved in 1940). The place was originally called Johnttown in honor of the sailor who discovered gold at the site. It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and the San Diego metropolitan area of San Diego. It has a population of 3,829. It was formerly known as "Johntown" and was the site of several gold mining operations, including the Black Oak Mining Company, which went bankrupt in the 1930s. The town is now known as Garden Valley and has a post office that opened in 1852 and has been in operation since 1853. It also has a high school that was founded in 1854. The community is home to the Garden Valley High School, which was established in 1872 and has an enrollment of 2,000 students. The school district is part of the San Fernando Valley School District, which has a enrollment of 1,800 students.
